Though I'm not quite sure why such a tiny ass village fears riots in the first place. Many European forces also have assault rifles, but that's obviously for SWAT like forces, not for riot police. Riot police forces are often just armed with batons and pepper spray - never bring a gun to a fistfight and all.

Also, many European police forces also own armored vehicles. That's a modern German one for example:

The problem here is that nobody in Ferguson is rioting, they're all just demonstrations. Nobody's doing anything that warrants guns being pointed at them. There's really no reason to have armored vehicles out.

There has been plenty of rioting there. The question is of course whether it's a result of having guns pointed at them to begin with. Good chance of that.

70% of CNN's airtime right now is what happened and is happening in Ferguson. The rest is mainly the situation in Iraq. They just had two huffington post reporters that had been arrested for being at a McDonalds near the protest.

I'm not saying anyone is innocent or guilty in this case, and neither can anyone else.

Not letting the justice system run its course is just as unconstitutional as racial discrimination.

For this officer to be labeled guilty at this point in time, is likewise unconstitutional.

This case is being investigated by local and federal agencies. If there is enough evidence for a trial, there will be one, and all of it will be brought forward for his trial by jury.

Since the first night? The only thing I saw last night was people standing around and some people occasionally leading some cheers. I didn't see anyone threatening local businesses or intending to hurt the cops. And like you said, guns, tear gas, police dogs, etc could stir up that kind of activity.

Well I think the first night is a big part of it. I don't think it should be ignored especially since the victims were innocent. There has still been bottles thrown and molotov cocktails apparently. None of this justifying the militarized police. I think it's a direct result of seeing the police as they are. They are causing more fear than good to say the least. Especially with the media. Trying a media blackout is probably the dumbest thing you can do.

It's been pretty neutral.

CNN is pretty shit for the most part, but the coverage on this hasn't been too terrible. The most they goofed up, which was pretty bad, was that they were showing the less flattering pictures of the victim every other news source was showing at first. A CNN Correspondent was on at the time and mentioned how news sources are showing these less flattering pictures of the victim to paint a picture and then he said "I hope CNN isn't doing this as well", which they were at the same time.

Why is the guy in the middle making a threatening gesture towards the photographer?! Pointing his finger like a gun is an implicit threat of future violence.

Now that journalists have been wrongfully arrrested, I fully expect the media to go in deep on this now.

The whole situation is just fucking embarrassing to those who live here. I've lived here my whole life (about 15 mins outside of StL), and have never feared for my life, seen anything violent, and generally, in the area I live, whites and blacks get along quite well (though I'm sure there's some rotten eggs on both sides).

Its just sad that this poor young man was gunned down for no reason, and now its the last thing on anyone's mind because of everything else thats happening there. If the PD wanted to quickly divert the anger from the cop who killed Michael Brown, they seem to be doing a great job of it.

Absolutely, and riot police or not, I don't think you'd see that in Europe.
 
Everything that has been said has already been said, but...I seriously want to know.

If any white American claims they aren't racist, then why, WHY after all of these stories (Trayvon, Ferguson, etc) do some still claim with a straight face that American society isn't built upon institutionalized racism?

This is gone beyond just sheer denial, I'm almost inclined to believe genuine support for such actions, because it doesn't affect them, why should they give a shit?

We have conditioned a culture that racism is old hat. It just so happens to be out of everyday consciousness. We have youth who've fallen into this trap too, as they have bought the bullshit of American Individualism™, that racism has next to no impact on how far your social standing can go.

What it really comes down to is apathy. People think of themselves, and while they may not be racist, they are in a culture permeated on taking arbitrary differences and "ranking" the worth of others on those differences. Like poverty, it doesn't become an issue in an individual's life unless they themselves are affected, and that itself is the problem. It leads to societal apathy, and apathy is, fundamentally, accepting the status quo.

If people hated racism, among the massive amount of other bugbears we have, people would riot in the streets. But until it directly affects them, it's not an issue. It's why this garbage continues. Apathy IS acceptance, and many people are incredibly apathetic to all of our social problems. Unless they're the poor little me caught up in it, of course.

Sickening shit.
