It's probably old news by now but I just saw this.

Tear gassing the press so they can dismantle their gear? WTF is this, Russia?
I actually like what one of the commentators on MSNBC said about this.

The police are meant to enforce laws and the press is supposed to provide information to the people. Shooting tear gas at the press was akin to denying the people right to information.

The news articles I have been reading stated the reason for the initial detention was a failure to identify, and the final charge was trespass. I would argue the initial detention was valid, and there was good reason to believe there was criminal trespass. McDonalds is not a place you can set up your own personal business.

Are you being serious?

I've got to admit, removing the police force at this point is probably the best idea. The shit that went down last night is hard/impossible to excuse. At least from the outside looking in.

Are you saying the GOP can just throw Obama out of office just like that? Lol it doesn't work like that.

I'd also like to think most Democrats would not throw Obama out for speaking more candidly on this sort of situation, but what do I know I'm more or less non-partisan.

Well no, they couldn't throw Obama out of office. That's why he's doing so much with executive action. They could throw any congressional republican who might work to address the issue, which means there's no congressional support, which means there's no actual laws that can be implemented

Are you being serious?

Trespassing at McD's, how does that work?

This is actually true. I remember a story about a bunch of old Korean people getting kicked out of McDonald's because they would order 1 small fry, share it, and just sit there all day.

There's a limit as to how long you can stay in there. That being said, I have no idea how long the reporters were in there. And for the cops to do anything, they would've had to had been called there by employees first.

When did I imply anything about Obama? I thought we were talking about congress actually making new laws and actually doing their job.

Expect a tame "one one hand x, on the other hand y" statement from Obama that infuriates the right and leads to calls that he is stoking a race war.

Man this is all horrible. Have the police just gone full retard starting shooting tear gas at anyone and everyone?

SO many stories of bad cops in the off topic section it's ridiculous.

The department needs to be gutted from the top down. There is obviously something wrong there. I've heard this situation in Ferguson has been brewing for a long time and people have been waiting for something like this to happen.

I've lived in this area all my life. And there are a lot of areas that welcome diversity, and sadly, there are some that do not.

Having East St. Louis in the vicinity certainly doesn't help matters, with the corruption that's there, and that does nothing but help add perception to those who are raised to be prejudiced against black people. Hell, my father is even one, as he grew up in East St. Louis and witnessed first hand how quickly the town fell to corruption, and hence the "white flight" took place, and those who were living in poor communities in St. Louis moved there to at least get decent houses, and hopefully restore a good community. Sadly, that did not happen.

I've lost an uncle to ESL violence (related a lot to Michael Brown situation, albeit reverse since it was a black guard that shot my uncle), and my father and my other uncle were both tied, and pretty much kidnapped for a night until they were released. They were beaten. They were robbed, and my father had a gun pointed to his head while I was a 3 month old at home. My father has a lot of resentment towards black people because of this, and I have tried really hard to change his mindset. Its a tough thing to do when one is raised before the civil rights battle took place.

I know I'm rambling, but this area has been a kettle pot boiling for years. Mostly due to those communities that do not welcome diversity. Ferguson has been one of those communities, and obviously, its all coming out now. I just hope that some good can come out of this in the end.

......what???

c'mon man. You're really believing the polices account?
One showed them his lanyard, the other asked why he needed to identify and they arrested both.
But really, tresspassing... at fucking mcdonalds where they were customers? Get real.

Welcome to trespass law. The only element for criminal trespass is if you are exceeding the scope of the license and it is communicated to you at the place of business. Just because you can go into a McDonalds to buy some nuggets does NOT mean you are legally allowed to operate a business out of it.

Anything is possible when you're an apologist. They told them they could stay inside the McDonald's. Then they didn't like being filmed. So they arrested them.

Its not the police's call, its McDonalds call, as to whether it is trespass.

"It's up to the people of Ferguson to stop firing rockets at the police...

Wait, I think I'm mixing up my human rights abuses here... *flips pages*"

It was a jezebel article. I am trying to find it now but the internet is moving way too fast at the moment.

Yes, you can be arrested for criminal trespass if you attempt to utilize someone else's business for your own personal gain. McDonalds does not agree to you using their stores to sell your own lemonade or operate a press operation.
This article says they were arrested for not getting their bags fast enough. Nothing about trespassing.

From all the articles Iv read nothing on trespassing has come up. Hell the Mayor himself said they were getting the reporter out of the MD cause of a fire nearby(lol).

Obama: "I know I lecture other governments on violating the rights of protesters and repressing freedom of press... but this is America; and we're exceptional."

Jesus, I just heard of all of this (long work day). What is happening? I'm not even gonna pretend that shit like that couldn't happen here in west europe but holy shit, this is insane.

People do work while eating at a fast food restaurant / starbucks and utilizing the free wifi all the time. Was a complaint given to the police by McDonalds? No. The police came in and shut down the McDonalds and told the reporters they had to leave. The police would also not identify themselves.

what is this in reference to?

She was discussing the journalist being arrested in the McDonald's as questionable. He said that the it was dangerous out and she stated that there wasn't a danger in that McDonald's when they were arrested. He said the building next door was on fire so they were in danger, she corrects him saying it was previous night, he then corrects her that no it was last night, so she asked if he was going on record to say they were arrested for their safety, and he responded with "I don't know what happened I wasn't there." Made the snide comment I said early about his time then said "it was an unfortunate situation all around."

I think that's pretty much how it played out.

I haven't been paying much attention, but seems that there was no reason for the cop to shoot?

Eyewitness statements say that there was a struggle near the car and the cops gun went off, Brown and his friend took off running and the cop shot brown in the back while he was running. Brown turned around, put his hands up and started getting down and the cop kept shooting him for a total of 10 gunshots.

Police statements say Brown was going for the officers gun and during the struggle for the gun brown was shot. Brown took off and the officer told brown to stop or he'd shoot and only after failing to comply with that was brown shot again.

So if it was McDonald's call to have these reporters picked up for trespassing, then why were they picked up for failure to identify to begin with? Oh wait, that's right, the cops just wanted those reporters out of there and they are making shit up as they go along.

yea so here's the thing. Its not trespassing if McDonalds is fine with it. By all accounts, they had been there for days. So you're telling me out of nowhere the McDonalds called the police (which by all accounts, no one is really answering and getting a serious response from) they then came, asked them to leave, when the reporters were leaving peacefully, they were arrested for "not leaving fast enough."

Just stop.

I don't know if a complaint was given by McDonalds or not. Have you been to the Missouri General District Court to read the complaint? I haven't. I am just going off the news articles. Also, whether or not the police officers are also guilty of something does not excuse the guilty of reporters.

*Obama condemns the actions taken by the Ferguson police force*

*Armed "sovereign citizens" start showing up tomorrow morning to "support" them*

Obama doesn't have a re-election to worry about. He needs to just come out and spit truth about this situation. He's going to be accused of stoking a race war no matter what anyway.

Give us a break with this amateur lawyer nonsense.
