Mm.

Don't do it. If you have a viewpoint, present it as your own. Don't try to play games by saying, "This isn't what I think; I just wanted to argue the other side." There's more than enough representation of views on all sides without people further muddying the waters by arguing things they don't even believe - or more typically, things they do believe, but want to argue for without other people knowing they believe them.

I remember someone wrote a beautiful takedown of Fox News reporting practio and how they would use weasel words and the like to present their own viewpoint without having to take flack for it. Some of their favorite tactics were "some say" and playing devil's advocate. So congrats! You devils advocates have as much credibility as Faux News.

God bless this post. God bless this post so much.

I think GAF is way to harsh on people that don't advocate the prevailing liberal viewpoint on controversial social issues. To me, it really hinders interesting discussion in the OT section of the site...
Well, let's take the Martin case as an example. What were the liberal and conservative viewpoints of that issue? Can you explain? Because it is a fact that the kid was walking home at night with goods he paid for. It's a fact that the killer pursued the innocent teen against the advice of the kid and shot and killed martin. What is the conservative interpretation of these facts?

I have a feeling this isn't going to end well for anyone...the cop is going to get off, maybe some riots occur again...another injustice and it will happen again soon.

This is exactly what will happen. The narrative has already changed for Mike Brown, he's no longer a victim and is now the perpetrator. Because he fits the description of someone who robbed a store, Mike's name will be questioned, media will find the worst pictures of him that they can, the will constantly bring up this "robbery" as some sort of justification and the rest of the country will buy it. You see it all the time on GAF as example "oh well I mean he DID rob a store…". It's the same BS different day.

Agreed on Nixon. Dude sat down in Springfield and avoided this until he had no choice but to get involved. He stated he's "been on TV Wed. thurs. and today".

Wow, thanks for that clarification Nixon! Last I checked, Brown was killed on Saturday.

I remember two nights ago when his latest tweet was about visiting some pageant somewhere else in the state. Seeing all those replies where people shouting at him about what was going on in one of his own cities was depressing.

Please don't conflate a low tolerance for ignorantly destructive commentary with refusal to discuss volitile issues.

I'm hoping the overriding difference this time is that the Fed in the FBI is involved and local authorities won't be able to pull character assassination crap over on them. I'm choosing to be a bit more optimistic in light of that fact. We'll see though. The police chief's face just makes me angry and sick to my stomach at this point though.

brb, using imagination because of no pics.

If you can't survive an execution, don't do the crime bruv.

Simple as that.

Summary of the press conference that just took place?

Nixon appeared first, basically said that the information released this morning is part of the "ongoing investigation". Relayed that public calm is needed, and then went on usual rhetoric about the protests etc.

Captain Ron then came up and decided to bring everyone in closer together, a little kumbaya if you will. He spoke on the protests, and that the protests we saw last night "will continue". He then took questions about the shooting, and basically shoved that off to the PD to handle. Said he's there for "Security for the protests".

Nixon then came back on to soak up the good will that Johnson provided, which was then quickly overturned by people demanding answers for why he's closing schools in poor communities, and why he didn't appear until middle of the week. He quickly fled and the conference was over.

You may have a point in general but this was the worse possible time and place to bring it up. Send some mods a PM or something.

You can say whatever you want on GAF so long as its not racist, sexist, homo/transphobic or outright hateful. What can you not say that you want to?

Nobody has ever said anything worthwhile while "playing" Devil's Advocate. The Vatican stopped appointing them decades ago. You really wanna be behind the Papists' curve?

Saying you're playing the Devil's Advocate is very close to "I'm not a racist, but..."

There's no place for it in discussions like this.

I'm not trying to justify the shooting but *proceeds to justify the shooting*

Looks like it might have actually been smart of the police to keep these details quiet. We heard the shoplifting stuff just after the shooting took place and most here thought that didn't justify it then. Now that no ones talked about that for a while thanks to an absence of details people will use this as an "ah ha! told you so" moment.

Ugh, not to go off topic. The conservative viewpoint is that at the exact instant Martin was shot, he was on top of Zimmerman assaulting him. No evidence of any other crimes (stalking, harassing, etc) were presented during the trial. And even if it did happen, someone does not forfeit their right to self defense. Someone being assaulted who can't get away because they are pinned to the ground has the right to use lethal force to defend themselves. The jury seemed to agree.

According to the law in FL and many other states, just because you may be the first aggressor it doesn't mean you can't later use self defense. Example would be you push me and then I start beating you even after you try and get away. You can still use self defense even though you technically started it.

But just by posting this what I consider this non-controversial opinion, people will attack it and I could be banned (happened once already).

Man, you can't even see that guy's face. You can't ID shit from those shots, I know like a dozen guys that look like that. All they've got is a body type and some clothes.

Really the only two things that remotely look close are the shoes, and the hat, which everyone in St. Louis wears the bird on the bat.

Understand that many of these people have been making the same arguments for years to many new people. More often than not, the opposing viewpoint is either A) not novel, or B) insubstantial. So what happens is you have a bunch of people arguing the same things in a new skin, and it can get extremely tired knocking down the same ideas over and over again.

Don't get me wrong, though - if you're interested in a more nuanced discussion, there are people willing to explain to you why they believe what they do. But this thread has all of the aforementioned aspects plus an emotional component for black people in America. It would do you well to try and understand how people are feeling at this point instead of making arguments that (despite what may be your best intentions) ultimately just serve to diminish their experiences. If you have any questions or anything of that matter, feel free to shoot me a PM (or one of the more eloquent people in this thread, like Mumei).

But if the argument is simply "but what about the other side?" Then you're only serving to distract from an issue that America has been distracted from over and over and over again.

WTF? "all they have is his fully clothed dead body"...Pretty easy to confirm...
