Ferguson: Police Kill 18yo Black Male; Fire Gas/Rubber Bullets Into Protesting Crowds

Why not compare the frequency rate because that's the most important thing. If 100 innocent black men are killed vs 1 white guy, I'm not going to try to equate the two like they're fucking similar. What point are you trying to prove here; because it occasionally (very rarely) happens to white people, they know how police brutality feels?

I'm not even sure you know what police brutality feels like, how would I know? I have been so I'd hope you'd understand I'm definitely not sympathetic with police when it comes to these issues. Just don't act like it NEVER happens to white people, because that's basically what you said , like the next time it happens it would be the first. It JUST happened.

"At least if it happened to a reporter, white people would see that it could happen to them, too and I absolutely guarantee they would talk about it more than they would if it happened to me. "

WRONG.

As a white person, no I do not know what it's like to be a victim of systematic racism and oppression that has been happening for hundreds of years.

Why are you now, in addition to him, trying to move the goal posts? I called him out on something stupid he said and corrected him. Now y'all wanna change the discussion.

"At least if it happened to a reporter, white people would see that it could happen to them, too and I absolutely guarantee they would talk about it more than they would if it happened to me. "

No, you seriously get the fuck out of here. It does happen to them, we aren't comparing the frequency rate. Now you wanna change your statement up that I called you out on and you're clearly wrong about. You spoke as if white people don't know what it would feel like to have an unarmed white person shot and killed by police except it just happened not even a damn week ago. In fact, a lot of similarities between cases are very much there.

This is a false equivalency. No White people don't know what its like!

There is no long embittered history of White subjugation in this country!

There is no history of systemic and institutionalized racism against White people in this country!

There is no history of white people being denied justice just because of the color of their skin Time and Fucking Time again in this country!

There is no history of disproportionate arrests, and sentencing in this country!

Its tragic when anyone is shot and killed unjustly. But please understand the social and historical context of where all of this rage and anger is coming from.

No White people don't know whats its like.

I honestly don't give a fuck if you don't think I know what police brutality feels like, honestly. I don't have anything to prove to you. You obviously took my comment 100% literal. I'm not stupid, I'm sure it rarely happens to white people, but nowhere to the extent it does to black people. You should be smart enough to infer that instead of trying to offended over the honest truth. Even with it very rarely happening to white people, it's most likely not a common fear they have. They don't have to worry about being murdered in cold blood like me and several other black people do.

But let's not derail the thread more. I'm right, you're wrong. Sorry bout it.

Nobody disputed or even mentioned anything you just said. I don't dispute that it has happened more to black folks than anyone else in recent times. That's not even what we're talking about. (Well, now he is because he's wrong and wants to change it up) The dude acted like if a white reporter got killed by the police, that maybe THEN and only then they could know what it feels like. They should already be able to know what it feels like, it just fucking happened this week!

What a joke. I'm sure you worry about it every day. I don't know why, that's pretty irrational to be honest. I don't feel that way. Is it a possibility? Sure. So is flying out of a roller coaster.

I didn't say you had to prove anything to me, but you have indeed proven that you have your fingers in your ears and humming loudly because you know, you just couldn't possibly allow any rational thought inside of your head or respect that someone else has a different opinion or try to look at it from a different perspective. Carry on, my deaf and blind son.

All I can say is that I'm glad you're a lot more optimistic than me.

It would probably cause more of a stir when the entire world is watching than when it happened in Utah.

Black guy buys BB gun, gets SWATted by racist couple, cops fuck up, the end.

I just remembered one time being on the train and there was a middle-aged couple sitting nearby, wife arguing/rambling in an old NY accent (Jewish/Italian?) while guy looked miserable. A small group of black kids were goofing off and running between train cars at stops; bit annoying but harmless stuff. Lady is straight up clutching her purse for dear life asking her husband "SHOULD WE CALL THE COPS? I THINK WE SHOULD." I can't remember clearly, but she may have said something about the kids robbing someone or being thugs. Stupid stuff.

I think this mentality is what gets black people killed. Fear of every mundane action a black person takes being interpreted as DANGER.

Let's be honest. Most white people outside of GAF didn't really care about black protestors being tear gassed until it happened to Al Jazeera and those two reporters getting assaulted and detained.

Is anyone watching this guy on CNN right now?

"You're making Mike Brown out to be a choir boy. There's no choir boys in the ghetto."

I never should have said anything about the bingo board. :(

This thread seems fucked since then.

Not my point at all...it happened. Period. That's my only point and people act like it doesn't. I'm not here to talk about the frequency of it compared to whatever race. There's just people that seem to think that this ONLY happens to black people and that's not true. Whether that's by not being informed about it through the media or social avenues such as this or simply not caring when it does and dismissing it isn't for me to decide.

I could go off on a tangent about how the people in Utah should have protested and made their voice be heard but that's not for this thread. It would be suited better in that thread but by the looks of it, it would fall on deaf ears anyway because nobody seems to care.

In the context on this conversation he's correct As long as long as these injustices are constantly and MOSTLY happing to black and brown people the news media and white people in general are not going to care that much.

This is an unfortunate face of the culture we live in.

The guy on CNN is an idiot. He said the parents and kids in Ferguson had no jobs. -_- Then starts accusing the host that she called Mike a choir boy.

I don't know what happened in Utah other than some obscure reference you made about it not being reported outside of a local newspaper. What happened?

What the hell has happened to gaf?
People are extremely emotional about this. During the looting last night I quoted some tweets from several people on the ground, and when a poster didn't like the fact that the looting, bottle throwing truth, they to me to fuck off and to fucking prove it. Some just need to take a few breaths before posting.

It was like he was reading off YouTube comments on live TV.

"This was all blown out of proportion"
"Where was everyone before this incident?"
"There's nothing wrong with the police dept"
"Black people need to stop blaming the cops"

I don't see it like that at all. I can only speak for me. I do know that it happened but I don't even have a clue what the race of those individuals are nor do I care. They are people no matter what race they are. Honestly if I had to assume and take a stab in the dark....Al Jazeera...probably not white.

Except that's not what he said at all, not even close.

The point is it didn't get much airplay until the police started attacking journalists. Arresting and detaining without charging. Failing to identify themselves, etc. More people should have cared before that in my opinion.

No you probably dont see it because that's how cultural and institutionalized racism works. And realistically no one should really blame you for not seeing it. Its not part of your reality. But it is real.

These situations only become REAL to most white people when its hits home. Or make national news with a clean cut white face.

I agree and disagree. I knew all about it and most people I spoke to knew about it and I generally go out of my way to avoid the news lately cause it's all bad bad bad and it just gets tiresome after awhile. Now did the coverage increase at that point? Absolutely and it should have naturally. There was more (new) news to report.

Are you sure that's what they didn't like

.

Yeezus. I know I usually explain myself pretty well because I don't usually have this problem of people misunderstanding me so I'm not sure what the problem is in this thread.

"I don't see it that way" is in response to Cranky saying "Most white people outside of GAF didn't really care about black protestors being tear gassed until it happened to Al Jazeera and those two reporters getting assaulted and detained."

I don't see it that way. Most white people outside of GAF that I know were all like generally "damn, that's fucked up" so that's why I don't see it that way.
