PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | August 2014

I'm so hyped about SAO, even if I'll only be able to play it the next weekend.

Same. Thinking about playing it slowly until the super duper patch arrives in late september, but people say it's not an easy game to simply play a little and stop, so let's see.

Nice line up of games :D! The Ratchet games aren't that long (the first ironically being the longest while the latter ones last about.....10-15 hours depending on how much you do). They get much longer if you decide to get everything (Omega/Golden Weapons, the Titanem/Golden Bolts, all the gadgets, maxing out armor, ect) and the trophies are a bit of a pain (dat 1 Millon Bolt trophy for Ratchet 1 X().

Rouge Legacy is a perfect pick up and play game, so have fun with that as well :D.

Also, Persona 3 Portable will be something you will replay again once you beat it. Between many of the S. Links requiring max social stats, the S. Links being different for the Male/Female MC's and the game being a bit tricky to get all the Personas. Have fun though, its soundtrack is amazing the once you get further in the story, it really starts moving :D.

Yeah, I'm a Ratchet fanatic. I love the games so much, it's absolutely awesome to be able to play them on the Vita. I'm impressed at how good they look and run on it, honestly, especially after the Jak and Daxter games, which were playable, but incredibly rough. ALL of the Ratchet games take me over 30 hours to beat. I live in those worlds for as long as I can. Up Your Arsenal is my favorite, so I'm saving that one for last. Rogue Legacy is brilliant. I was addicted to that on Steam, so having it on the Vita is just excellent.

P3P is pretty awesome so far, but I've been taking my time with that one. I've mostly been bouncing around them all as the mood strikes me. I jump around a lot, but I've been chipping away at my library nonetheless.

What is the consensus so far about this game? I would go to the OT but it said that it is spoiler heavy, and I haven't seen the anime yet (I do plan on watch it, though).

People are loving the game, it appears to be a great action/adventure/MMO-like JRPG. If you can, watch the anime before playing the game, though.

Thanks, my friends tried to make me watch the anime for a long time, so I guess now I don't have a choice. My only problem is that I'm always scared with games that tie-in with existing properties.

The anime is trash. Why would anyone recommend that?

Because the story in the game picks up from halfway (ep 14?) on the anime. Surely you agree the anime isn't so trashy up to that point.

edit: adding parakeetman's note, just because:

This game takes place with the assumption the player has seen up to the halfway point of the animated series. If you have not seen the show yet or
are not familiar with the story and do not want spoilers, highly suggest you leave the thread now. The start of the story setting is a major plot
point which will be not marked with spoiler tags. If you are curious about where you need to watch up to in the show, at least be caught up to Episode 14.

I legit tried to watch it in lead up to the game. I got half way through episode 2 and said nope. Something about it was just ugh.

Might still try the game out depending on how good the gameplay is.

Yeah, in my opinion the anime is trash. Sorry to anyone who actually likes it. I couldn't take it seriously after hearing the line, "Okay, you can call me a Beater." in episode 2.

The game is supposed to pretty good, no wonder it's one of the highest-selling Vita games in Japan.
It's one of the highest selling games because it's a tie-in with an incredibly popular anime. Doesn't really speak for the quality of the game. The game itself looks just alright from what I've seen, tonnes of content though.

The second half of Sword Art Online was atrocious. Some of the worst writing I've ever seen. It was offenseive actually. Felt like a completely different show. While the first half was flawed and certainly not great...it was enjoyable if you could look past the dumber elements. Season 2 continues to have problems but is better than all of 1.

So meh. I can understand why people enjoy it. I imported the Hong Kong version of Hollow Fragments w/ subtitles and it's a great rpg w/ a lot of content. Its staggering actually. I agree the game expects you to have seen at least the first half of season 1 but I believe the game has a recap option that quickly covers the plot.

I can definitely recommend the game even if you dont like the anime. It's massive and the gameplay is different. It's real time combat, however your powers have cool downs and there are buffs and combo systems. But at its basic core, you can pretty much just swing as many times as you want. But there is a lot of micro-managing where it's all about timing (and getting synergy with your buffs and doing combos with your partner). It's actually a really cool combat system that is very engaging, energetic and complex.

Probably one of the best values I've seen in terms of the amount of content you get for what you pay.

Man, screw the haters, Sword Art Online was a perfectly enjoyable anime, even the second half. While I prefer the first half to the second, I still enjoyed it throughout. There were some cringe worthy anime tropes as always
god why does every sibling want to romance their other sibling
, I personally am capable of enjoying something while ignoring aspects of it that I don't like.

I am extremely excited for the game, because hopefully it will explore some of the characters more that the anime didn't have time to address, and I have heard it is a fun game with solid mechanics and can hold your attention for a long time, which is something I am looking for right now.

I'm sorry

I'm so sorry

But I thought the second half was
slightly
cooler

edit: I thought the anime was OK overall. Not a huge fan but it was likable. The game looks really neat though, I'll pick it up around the holidays probably

Well, that's cool. Glad you liked it, no need to apologize. But I personally hated the second half. Hated the villain, hated the bizarro romance side plot w/
his sister/cousin or whatever
. I pretty much hated everything about the second half, and thought it was full of cringe worthy moments.

That said, opinion is opinion. *shrugs* But to be clear, I'm not saying people are WRONG or have bad taste if they don't agree with me. I know people that hat SAO (especially the second half) can be pretty adamant about it. But that is not my intention here. Was just throwing out my 2 cents on the anime. I think regardless of whether you like or dislike the show/novels, the game is really good IMO.

not really an apology more sarcasm but it's cool lol

honestly the only thing I thought was better about it was the setting. for some reason the elf/fairy thing just appealed to me more than Aincrad. /shrug

Really impressed by the amount of content in the Disgaea 4 demo. It scratches my itch enough to almost not get the full game. Now should I buy Akiba's Trip, Sword Art Online, or stick to my original plan (Disgaea 4) this month?

SAO is a series that becomes progressively better the further removed it becomes from the original concept of dying in a MMORPG = death that made up the first two volumes. The author also becomes a better writer by consequence which makes his later volumes worth reading.

Second half of SAO season 1 anime is so bad.

Well I just meant, my intention wasn't to shame anyone or be condescending (I edited my post btw). My post was just throwing an opinion out there and wasn't saying anyone was wrong for not agreeing. But that said, I get it. I know how mean spirited anime fans can be towards other fans. I can only imagine being a fan of SAO would get tiresome given out relentless people are about hating it.

I actually quite enjoyed the first half (even though I thought it was very flawed). Like I had a lot of criticisms with it, but I still enjoyed it! But unlike you, I truly loathed the second half. And tbh I went 100% blind into the anime, not even knowing people hated SAO. I was actually living in Japan at the time, and did a marathon run of the entire show front to back. Wasn't until after the fact I saw that a lot of people hated the 2nd half as much as me. I can see the appeal of the second half (in terms of the RPG world being better, but I hated the plot. That was my major gripe. Not the shift in the actual game itself).

ANYWAYS...as I said in my last post, the point I was really trying to get to...was that I think the game is really really great. It's a great value for your money. It's a great open world RPG title. So even if you don't like the anime, I would highly recommend it!

Man, I always forget that demos exist. I've been trying to decide whether or not to get D4 for a while, and never even thought to check for a demo. Thanks for reminding me that exists. Time to see what stuff on my wishlist has demos!

I actually agree with you about the plot, the second half was completely unnecessary, but the atmosphere/world seemed better to me. Anyway, I don't to keep doing this back and forth lol. I respect your opinion, your post was fine too. Like I said I'm not a huge fan, I thought it was ok, but it's definitely not the greatest like a lot of people claim.

ANYWAY, the game does look cool and I hope I can get it in the near future. Is there a demo at all?

Also, I kind of wanted to make a thread about this, but I'm refraining for now. How do you all feel about fanservice in games. I know a lot of you don't mind it/like it, but with the release of Akiba's Trip I just find myself thinking that I find it really annoying how they pour fanservice into these games. I don't mean to insult anyone who enjoys the game or games like it, it's just not for me. There are games that I want to play, like Hyperdimension Neptunia, Senran Kagura, or Atelier, but I just can't look past how all the characters are moe girls and all the fan service, it's just really off putting to me.

Im sorry did i hit some SAO anime thread by mistake? The game seems generic but I might give it a shot. Anime is dull I don't get the appeal at all. This reminds me of those persona 4 waifu discussions on this thread.

Changing subject . I might dig into ridge racer vita. I mean I'm a big ridge racer fan and this game at least looks cool. Content wise can be a bummer but gameplay wise seems what I expected of a ridge racer game. After all the first ridge racer ever was like 1 track and a few boxed shape cars and I still enjoy that.

All it comes down to is balance and execution. Is there enough of a game around it to satisfy actually playing? And is the fanservice itself of a nature that you're okay with?

It's obvious that some games lean in to fanservice far more heavily than others because their main draw is the fanservice and not the game itself. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, only that the game as a whole loses that balance that I was mentioning earlier.

As a Ridge Racer aficionado I keep seeing RRVita on sale and my urge to buy it is only deterred by all the poor reviews and impressions people have given it since it was released.

If you haven't got a RR on Vita yet consider going for Ridge Racer Type 4 and Ridge Racer PSP before you decide on the Vita version.

Can someone make a thinly veiled waifu thread? I wanna get the Persona x Gravity Rush TGS hype going. I'll buy SSD~.

I really like SAO, but something about every single gameplay video (of the game, obviously) I've watched so far feels... off. I don't know, it just looks generic and derivative. Maybe it's the art style or something, but that coupled with it's price tag (considering it's downloadable only) puts me more on the "not buying" side of the fence.

And yet, so far, I haven't read any mediocre, let alone bad, impressions of it. I honestly have no idea of what to make of it.

Yeah, the balance is important. Reminds me of how Gurren Lagann has a ton of fanservice in the first few episodes, but the plot and setting of the show made it worth it to me. Unfortunately I haven't found a "fanservicey" game like this yet, although admittedly I have only gotten the information I have from trailers and videos.

the only fanservice that really makes me not want to play is blatant over sexualization and super moe girls. some moe is ok, but too much and I'm just out

I enjoyed all of the SAO anime, and I am currently enjoying the second season. I think it's curious why the second half is so polarizing.

SAO (from what I've seen, watched in videos, read, and seen as opinions here) is designed to appeal to people that liked the anime. If you didn't find the anime appealing, the game by fundamental design might not be for you.

I'm certainly looking forward to playing it next week! It looks gorgeous.

Random question time: I'm beginning to run outa room on my 500gb PS3, is there a way to see how much space each game is taking up (like on the Vita)?

I only noticed when using it to back up my Vita card for the 64gb upgrade.
