Ferguson: Police Kill 18yo Black Male; Fire Gas/Rubber Bullets Into Protesting Crowds

Do we know these things for a fact?

This is the first I'm hearing about the tape not being willingly handed over. We do know, however, that it was released despite the DoJ strongly requesting it wouldn't be and the county police chief even saying it wasn't relevant to the shooting. We also know that there is more video from the store that apparently shows money for the items being left on the counter and picked up by the store employee prior to the altercation. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maA1FUJqhew&feature=youtu.be )

I believe they are some Indian controlled areas of Tibet, but I agree it was worded a bit strangely.

If I remember correctly, that was a relatively small sample size. I'd definitely like to see some more trials around the country to observe the effects of equipping cops with cameras. It's not an easy policy to just simply institute.

For sure. I imagine it would be higher/lower in different areas of the country but it is still a positive and a move in the right direction of holding officers accountable for their actions.

I'm waiting for tonight when the police tear gas the monks.

Wait. Wrong monks.

He's done some good work in Ferguson, but I thought this was funny.

Do we know these things for a fact? People are on hair triggers here so allow me to assure you that demanding sources every time anyone posts claims in a thread littered with people eagerly lapping up any spurious tidbit that confirms their bias -- whether it be "My cousin's friend's sister says Brown was making Matrix moves as he advanced on the cop" or "the scene in the store was actually the owner arguing that Playboy's June centerfold was finer than February" -- is not devil's advocacy.

Yes these are facts. This was posted earlier:

The store employees and owner did not call the police to report the robbery.
The store's owners, through their attorney, sent the message that they want to stay as far away from the situation as possible. In fact, he said, even after the initial alleged theft, it was a customer who called police.

"It's not about them. They didn't call the police, they didn't ask the police to come and take the video," said attorney Jay Kanzler.

Shooter not knowing about the robbery:
Video of the incident allegedly showing Brown, which was released to the public, "had nothing to do with the stop" and was "unrelated" to Wilson's contact with Brown, Jackson said. He said video of the convenience store incident was released in response to Freedom of Information Act requests.

"The initial contact between Darren Wilson and Mike Brown was not related to the alleged theft of cigars," Jackson said, indicating Wilson did not know Brown was a suspect in the robbery.

He's an Alderman for Ferguson.

What's interesting is that he's from another district.

I dint think we've actually heard anything from the local rep. Wonder if he's white?

Maddow was talking about how the district is like 80% black but the board is 100% white and they fired the black superintendent.

I have a feeling this will change after these events. Too much voting power to be ignored.

The Ferguson police chief said that they released the video tape on the same day they revealed the officer's name because the media kept bugging them about it. He kept making it sound like he really didn't want to but the press was just being so mean. Didn't we not even know about the robbery until several days after the shooting? You guys probably discussed it already, but his excuse doesn't really make too much sense imo.

Yeah the convenience store owners lawyers issued a statement

Statistics show that with cameras, use of force incidents and complaints dropped by a hefty 50-80% when used. Will look it up when I'm off my phone and source it. Gimme 10 mins.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Edit: Was wrong - 60-88%
"after cameras were introduced in February 2012, public complaints against officers plunged 88% compared with the previous 12 months. Officers' use of force fell by 60%."

What? Who knew!

If you look at the feed of the guy who was live tweeting the shooting he actually mentions the Cigarillos and Mike Brown being accused of stealing them but it's not clear where he was getting that info from.

It's not surprising you'd call into question all the witnesses that support the version of events that say the cop executed the black kid, but immediately jump onto supporting the one person whose testimony lines up with your racist views. You and the rest like you should abandon these threads. You're a poison to the discussion.

Gets pretty defensive about white pride here:

Posted a thread about teens getting kicked off a bus and one punches the driver in anger. He seems to have been quick to connect it to the "knockout game" before realizing it had nothing to do with it. Knockout has a lot of incidents erroneously attributed to it + fear mongering of blacks and underccurent of racism among certain news outlets.

This one is a bit cryptic and flew under the radar, but I believe he's choosing to selectively highlight only on a "murders commited by blacks/Latinos" stat while ignoring that the thread is about stop and frisk and that Bloomberg is being an asshole.

Another post under the radar. I believe he's saying blacks need to forgive whites for their wounds to heal before we can move forward, essentially blaming them for slow/lack of progress.
How can White people (EU+US) try to heal the wounds inflicted upon Black people?

Why this isn't already a requirement is beyond me.

In response to the liquor store camera showing the clerk with "money" in his hand.. why the hell don't we have more HD cams?

I can see he definitely has something and places it into his pocket, but there's no way I could definitively say that was cash. The clerk doesn't seem like he's chasing him out for stealing though, unless he's just unusually calm.

We should equip both sides with nerf guns and water balloons and let them have at it. Get some frustration out.
What are you fucking crazy. You're just asking for someone to get there eye shot out. I know this well. Got my sister in the eye with the suction cup dart.

Yup, equipping every officer with a lapel camera would be a huge positive.

Not here in Albuquerque. Police are still shooting unarmed people all the time. Earlier this year, they released lapel footage from a shooting where the suspect clearly threw down his gun, ran away from the officer, and then got shot 8 times in the back. That case was that officers third shooting.

Plus, a lot of the time the cops just turn their cameras off. Happens all the time here.

I've been caught out of the loop so far today. I heard that protesting has been a lot louder today than it was yesterday (understandable due to weather).

Anyone care to summarize today's events for me? Thanks in advance!

Well, there would obviously have to be severe punishments for turning off their camera. And how the fuck did that cop not get convicted with evidence like that?

Anyone know how legit those Casenet reports are?

I keep seeing people post these "look at his rap sheet!" and am sure I read he has no prior history with arrest.

Just like with the Trayvon Martin case, somehow I feel that if this was a white kid getting gunned down by a cop, this whole situation would have been very different.

http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/news/2014/08/13/michael-brown-had-no-criminal-record.html

Michael Brown, the unarmed 18-year-old man who was shot and killed by a Ferguson police officer Saturday, had no criminal record, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office confirmed Wednesday.

Well, there would obviously have to be severe punishments for turning off their camera.

That would be nice. Unfortunately, the reality is that they are barely punished at all:

http://www.koat.com/news/lapel-camera-policy-apds-most-violated-in-2013/25931218#!bFhh3l

A written reprimand? A "possible" 10 day suspension for the THIRD offense?!?! What a joke.

And how the fuck did that cop not get convicted with evidence like that?

lol. Yeah right. Paid leave and a nice little vacation... back out there "protecting" our streets as we speak.

So...um...does anyone actually know where the officer in question even is at the moment? Is he on vacation with the fam or something? If so, WHY?

Well, there would obviously have to be severe punishments for turning off their camera. And how the fuck did that cop not get convicted with evidence like that?

Because you're being lied to about the events which took place. The suspect had a gun and was told by the officer to stop and put his arms in the air. Instead he decided to run and only threw the firearm away after the officer had fired five shots.

This really is turning into Trayvon Martin all over again. Twitter sphere saying there are pro Darren Wilson protestors now. :(
