Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Ape is on both the Melee and Brawl box (don't have Smash 64 handy but someone can look that up), and Itoi is on the Brawl box (maybe Mother 3 and Earthbound have different license holders?).

We already know that Mother content is in the game, so the copyright listing is incomplete.

Celebrating the removal of Snake is bizarre behavior I'll never understand

Or any character, for that matter -- even if it were a character I didn't care about, I'd be bummed on behalf of the people who really loved that character

Yeah I feel the same way. This is why I can never be bothered or angered by a character inclusion. As long as the fans are happy.

Melee and Brawl boxarts had "APE Inc." (and in Brawl, Shigesato Itoi) for Ness and Lucas.
I think they're just hiding the companies of unnannounced characters, for the moment.

Although Snake is likely cut anyway, the lack of a Konami trademark means nothing.

Did any 3rd party character not have their trademark listed beforehand? Its one thing to list it on the internet where you can change it when needed. Packaging is different, you can't retroactively change that to suit your needs.

Lol everyone that hated snake had no idea how to play as him
Only reason for wanting him cut

Oh well, that's why I can play as any character B^) infinity smash guantlet

Because Rayman isn't playable.

They'll give them a copyright blurb in the credits.

I wonder, if Itoi owns Mother 3 but Ape owns Earthbound, if this means Lucas isn't playable either. I know we're sort of moving in the direction or copyrights meaning nothing, but wouldn't an official piece of shelf merchandise be obligated to detail this kind of information?

Darn, it looks like the preorder copyright doesn't really confirm/deny anything because ITOI and Ape Inc. were indeed on the Brawl box copyright and I'm sure that no sane person expects everything from Mother to be cut from the new Smash Bros.

I mean sure, if I was Sakurai and was looking for a third party to join, I'd probably skip over Snake considering Konami wants fuck all to do with Nintendo nowadays. But Snake was in Brawl, so by that event, I'd consider him a part of the Nintendo family, at least from a Smash POV.

SSB4 Development -- Day XX

Artist: "Here's my design for Nightmare Wizard. Please sign your approval here, sir."

Sakurai: "Not so fast, Eager McBeaver"

Artist: "What is it?"

Sakurai: "...make this side of the chin... lower than the other..."

Artist: "But then it'll look like testicles"

Sakurai: "Exactly"

What a hearty laugh I have been given on this bright morn!

I keep seeing that picture posted with music updates but where is it on the actual site?

Eh, it's just a little schadenfreude. You actively dislike a character, so you get a little shot of pleasure when they get cut. Seems perfectly natural to me, and as long as you aren't too obnoxious about it - making it personal by rubbing it in the faces of people who liked that character - I wouldn't resent you for it.

Even if you plan to never use a particular character, it's inclusion in the game comes at a cost. I am not referring to the cost in resources for the developer (time, money, storage) but in mental cost for the players. Familiarity with all characters is a benefit, and devoting mental effort toward being familiar with too many characters can hamper the overall experience.

This is the first time I have seen this argument and I'm not sure how to feel about it :|

Ape isn't on the smash 64 box, just nintendo, Hal laboratory, creatures inc and game freak.

Huh, bizarre.

... could it be possible that they were willing to keep Ness's appearance in the game so secret, that they would exclude APE from the copyright listing? I mean, that doesn't really make sense to me, but... Melee and Brawl had Mother starting characters and 64 didn't, so... I don't know...

I don't think it's the copyright info that seals Snake's fate, it's the fact that he's not visually represented on the back of the box along with the other third-party characters.

The writing's just on the wall. There is literally no reason they would hide Snake this long, especially when (a) Sonic was revealed almost a year ago now and (b) history tells us that Nintendo uses third-party characters on the box to sell the game.

I mean, if Sonic wasn't already long announced, that'd be one thing. But everything just doesn't add up; there's no logical reason Nintendo wouldn't use Snake to promote the game along with Sonic, Mega Man, and Pac-Man.

At least for me personally, I now feel 100% sure Snake is cut. If that's accurate, I won't really miss him that much (love the character but didn't really care about him in Smash one way or the other), but I will miss his Codec conversations and I feel pretty bad for all the Snake fans out there. :(

Do the packaging copyrights only have starter/revealed characters then maybe? It would make sense if the character is meant to be a secret that it's not revealed on the box.

also given the specifics of some of the characters in the fanfic
they describe me as wearing clothing that I was wearing at the time of meeting a certain other SmashGAF regular
I'm pretty sure I know exactly who is behind this

Your average gamer is more familiar with Snake than half of the characters in the SSB roster, so I'm not sure your theory applies here!

Why are they suddenly in the cutting board

I wouldn't call it suddenly. I think ROB was the "suprise!" character for Brawl like Wii Fit Trainer is for the new Smash Bros. He's not really a character per se so much as a personified peripheral and his lack of characterization in that regard would probably make him one of the softest-hitting characters to cut for the new games.

Wolf as well is mostly just an addendum to give the Star Fox series a third representative for Brawl. The tweaked clone-ness of the Star Fox/Falco/Wolf trio makes the other two prime targets for pruning. Since Falco has arguably the most personality of any members of the Star Fox team, I think that leaves Wolf for the easy snip to allow them the resources to "unclone" the likes of Falco and Ganondorf to a greater degree.

Agreed, my heart goes out to all the Snake fans out there.
