Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Well, we already have Mr. Saturn and Franklin Badges as returning items from MOTHER, so I find it quite curious that they wouldn't need a trademark for some reason.

And people, there's no greater conspiracy of "WHAT IF THEY ARE KEEPING X SECRET". No. They are not. They are legal copyrights. You don't mess with that.

I'm pretty sure I know exactly who is behind this
To be honest, I feel like half the character descriptions are probably some kind of subtle insight into the writer's life and experiences.
I was about to joke that you hadn't posted here since being pounded to meatpaste in the fanfic... glad to see you're still with us ;P

I wouldn't call it suddenly. I think ROB was the "suprise!" character for Brawl like Wii Fit Trainer is for the new Smash Bros. He's not really a character per se so much as a personified peripheral and his lack of characterization in that regard would probably make him one of the softest-hitting characters to cut for the new games.
I've never really thought of the surprise characters as expendable at all. Especially with the more obscure Melee characters (Ice Climbers and Game and Watch) coming back for the sequel. ROB is cool and seems like a weird choice to exclude, to me.

Spillll it

Snake isn't in the "guest characters join the battle" screen.

Is that same picture that was used on website right?

Mii Fighter creation screen! That's new info! It looks like there are only four slots...?

4 slots for Hat, Arm, Body and one more I forget.

Hahaha rip snake

yay no snake.

Purchase of Sm4sh redeemed.

I don't see why people need to acting like douchebag to other people who care about the character.

Exactly. Roster is poorer for every character cut.

Exactly, I agreed with the statement.

Just like Mr. Game & Watch, who was never seen again after Melee.

Huh, bizarre.

... could it be possible that they were willing to keep Ness's appearance in the game so secret, that they would exclude APE from the copyright listing? I mean, that doesn't really make sense to me, but... Melee and Brawl had Mother starting characters and 64 didn't, so... I don't know...

Well that Melee box picture dosen't have Intelligent Systems on there even though it has Marth and Roy, so maybe they were trying to hide the secret characters?

Either way I wouldn't make a bet on the copyright listings, at least not until release. Snake seems unlikely though.

Ladies and gentlemen of SmashGAF, the real writer of the fanfic is...

I really do hope we'll get DLC with Snake. Time it to coincide with MGSV as sort of a general celebration of Snake. Who cares if his new game isn't on Nintendo. Didn't stop Snake from being in Brawl when MGS4 came out a couple months later.

Huh, that's totally right. Intelligent Systems is on the Brawl box, but not Melee's...

I think it seems awfully drastic to exclude secret characters from the copyright listing for the sake of secrecy (and I mean, I had no idea you could even legally do that, lol), but there does seem to be a trend. I really don't know what to think, in all honesty.

Wolf as well as mostly just an addendum to give the Star Fox series a third representative for Brawl. The tweaked clone-ness of the Star Fox/Falco/Wolf trio makes the other two prime targets for pruning. Since Falco has arguably the most personality of any members of the Star Fox team, I think that leaves Wolf for the easy snip to allow them the resources to "unclone" the likes of Falco and Ganondorf to a greater degree.

Erm, just because ROB is a peripheral doesn't make him any less of a character :P

And wut, Wolf is not even a "true" clone compared to Falco. There's really no need to trim him save for maybe the Final Smash.

Sakurai has zero issues with clones, so I don't see why he'd cut characters based of that. Toon Link is back and unchanged and we have a newcomer who is a clone of Marth. Wolf isn't going to be cut because of his small similarities to Fox and it is very likely that Falco is going to keep his Brawl moveset.

I think that's reasonable. As long as the copyright is acknowledged in the credits, I don't see what's on the box as a big deal. But I don't know anything about the legal issues behind this stuff.

Wow, the schadenfreude in this thread is pathetic. "Hah! A character that doesn't deserve to be in my beloved Smash Bros. is cut!"

Snake brought with him a charm and playstyle that no other Nintendo character can replace and the game is lesser for losing out on him.

2.1GB? Wow, that's small for a huge game with a 45+ roster, 544+ trophies, modes, features, etc.

Also, there's no CPP logo on the back..

:(

It's called compression man ;P and also you should've expected Nintendo would've wanted to use 2GB carts... the 4GB hasn't been used by anyone but Capcom and Konami lol

So how far will you guys go with spoilers once the game releases?

I'm gonna definitely spoil the roster.

Definitely look into if online play is good. (just so I know)

Maybe look into movesets for veterans, e.g. ganondorf.

Outside of those things I wanna try and stay spoiler free in regards to content.

I don't think it's the copyright info that seals Snake's fate, it's the fact that he's not visually represented on the back of the box along with the other third-party characters.

The writing's just on the wall. There is literally no reason they would hide Snake this long, especially when (a) Sonic was revealed almost a year ago now and (b) history tells us that Nintendo uses third-party characters on the box to sell the game.

I mean, if Sonic wasn't already long announced, that'd be one thing. But everything just doesn't add up; there's no logical reason Nintendo wouldn't use Snake to promote the game along with Sonic, Mega Man, and Pac-Man.

At least for me personally, I now feel 100% sure Snake is cut. If that's accurate, I won't really miss him that much (love the character but didn't really care about him in Smash one way or the other), but I will miss his Codec conversations and I feel pretty bad for all the Snake fans out there. :(

Wait the back of the box for the game is out?
That was my last glimmer of hope for his inclusion. This is a bad day.

No one should ever be trimmed for their final smash, even when it's Landmaaaaster.

Wolf's specials are notably similar to the other spacies, but he plays pretty much totally different.

brawl-copyright.jpg

Darn, it looks like the preorder copyright doesn't really confirm/deny anything because ITOI and Ape Inc. were indeed on the Brawl box copyright and I'm sure that no sane person expects everything from Mother to be cut from the new Smash Bros.

Darn, I was hoping a Camelot copyright would help gauge Isaac's chances, but it looks like Brawl didn't even have a Camelot copyright.

Neiteio is a dude. Unless he was lying when he said so before and now is telling the truth.
I believe what I said before was I play a guy on GAF, no? Boys' club satire, "that would be tits," etc. Doesn't really matter.

Anyways.

Snake will always be a Smash Bro to me. Here's hoping he comes back in DLC. Konami could use it to promote MGSV like how Brawl Snake promoted MGS4, and maybe get a nice cut on each DLC addition sold...

The removal of characters is a weird thing for Smash. As an all star game, the characters featured are characters people already know and like. They are characters that excite fans by being featured. While other fighting games have their staples, characters also come and go all the time. Mortal Kombat X, for example, is having a launch roster that's almost half new characters people have no previous attachment to.

But with Smash, you might have been waiting seven years to see your character appear. Then, if they made it, you have them for seven more. You potentially have a fourteen year relationship with that character and Smash Bros. I mean, look at people still playing Melee. The people who took the time to recreate Mewtwo in Project M. You get attached. Any fighter can become "your character."

From a development standpoint, it is inevitable that characters will be cut or altered. Characters become less relevant, or less popular, and the time it takes to include them is less justifiable. We lost a lot of characters from Melee to Brawl, clones or not, and we've already lost some friends from Brawl to Smash 4. But losing fighters, no matter how often it happens, is never going to be easy for their fans.

If Mewtwo isn't in Smash 4, I will never get over it. I never played as Mewtwo in Melee. But I love Mewtwo. Mewtwo is missing for me. And after seven years of waiting for Brawl after Melee and seven years of waiting for Smash 4 after Brawl, I'm prepared to go another seven years waiting to see if Mewtwo is in Smash 5.

Smash Bros characters aren't nobodies. They're my childhood heroes, they're my friends. I never played as Squirtle or Ivysaur, or Lucas or Snake for that matter, but I know those guys. We've hung out with the same people since 2007.

I know this is all very romantic and not everybody is attached to Nintendo characters, but I will never be happy to see somebody go.

Gonna learn everything about the game! No surprises left unturned!

No Ubisoft copyright is odd.

The copyrights are only for characters confirmed playable up to now. It was the same with Brawl.

No Itoi copyright = Lucas and Ness are cut?

Cross-posting from the other thread:

Melee and Brawl boxarts had "APE Inc." (and in Brawl, Shigesato Itoi) for Ness and Lucas.
I think they're just hiding the companies of unnannounced characters, for the moment.

The preorder boxart only has to show copyrights for the characters portrayed on the box, I would think. Melee doesn't include intelligent systems on the box, even though the title screen does once you unlock Roy/Marth. This is in no way a deconfirmation of characters.

Smash 64 makes no mention of APE, even though Ness was in. I don't think the title screen updates though.

Pretty much most of this:

I'm going to ruin the roster, I'll be forced to see it or it'll be sprung upon me by a friend by mistake anyways.

Going to see some online gameplay footage.

Then ignore everything past there.

If it was a worldwide release I'd try to hide my eyes from the roster. But it's not. I can't be at work five days a week for a month and not read SSB impressions and spoilers.

So I'll probably just go all out and read whatever. The only moments I wouldn't want spoiled are the character unlocks, but it's not possible for me to avoid that.

I want to know all

The weird thing about this is that a whole series is gonna be removed from Smash Bros, unless we get MGS trophies or whatever.

Man, I'm really bummed about this.

I'm gonna try to avoid anything that isn't officially revealed before JP launch. I'll be downloading the game on Sept 13 and I want to discover things on my own. Will probably stay off the internet for a week or so (save for IRC) before the game is out
