Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Sad as I don't want somebody to be really cut as well. While I don't use Snake that much, the codec sections were really fun in Brawl. Should be a lot of work for the codec parts this time around if he's gonna make it in.

The codec conversations were really fun and really great in Brawl. But when you think about it, the joke really wouldn't work twice. The whole thing behind the codecs was that Snake was on the field encountering these characters for the first time and the codecs allowed us to see his reactions.

In Smash 4 all the codecs for veterans would have to be rewritten. What kind of humor and novelty could really be pulled from Snake's second impression of all these characters? It was really funny and interesting the first time, but like comedy sequels, the joke doesn't land as well the second time.

But probably we will never know.

I'm pretty sure that would require you to smash stick to turn around, wait (I think) four frames, then smash the stick and press A within one frame. That's TAS stuff. Doing it with the C-stick is hard enough as it is.
It's hard to time, but definitely not impossible to do consistently. That's how I was shown to do it, at least. But thinks for the info, I had no idea the frames were anywhere close to that tight.

wait so what's the full top 5 then?

also where do you find this stuff :P

Pic of the day. Nightmare Wizard appears as an Assist Trophy! He will engulf the stage in darkness, and fighters will need to brawl blindly for a while. Look out for the effect before it goes dark, and play it to your advantage. Blinding and reversal effects even make the computer players mess up.

A bit late on this yes, but sweet! He looks awesome!

Though I wish he did his tornado body attack. Would have been pretty cool to see that on the Wii U.

I don't remember when Sakurai updated the Brawl Dojo with the complete roster hidden behind spoiler blocks. Some people say it was for the Japanese release, but I really don't remember.

I imagine there will be several veterans who are not officially revealed. Every newcomer, since they have trailers, will be revealed beforehand though. Then it's up to Sakurai I guess with what gets put on the Dojo.

Thanks for the info, FF! That's kinda too bad. I like the idea of some newcomers being a total surprise as they were back in the day, but it is understandable. I still remember unlocking Ness as a kid and being like, "who?!"

This whole "Snake doesn't fit in the game!" and "Good, Kojima doesn't care about Nintendo!" business is giving me a headache. How can someone justify the removal of a whole series from a celebration of video games in general with such filmsy stuff :/

It's not justified at all. Some people just want to watch the
Smash
world burn.

My favorite thing about Snake in Smash is that he really stood out as being an outsider, and I'm not just saying that because he's a third party, but because he's the only character that actually feels like he's interacting with characters from another world/universe/whatever. It's mostly due to the codecs and his trailer, though, but they really did help in giving off that impression.

That's actually something that I don't like about Smash. Despite the novelty of having different Nintendo characters fighting each other, it doesn't really feel like Mario fighting Kirby is any different from fighting Bowser, if you get what I mean. Snake was the only character that gave me the impression that he's really among characters that aren't in his league.

I don't know it's been bothering me since even when he was in the game. Since that was still always brought up.

This is probably the best compromise - the gradual unveiling of newcomer trailers captures a similar amount of excitement and anticipation while making it much easier to control the flow of information. For me at least, the the flaming Smash logo and heartbeat elicits very similar feelings to what the 'challenger approaching' screen used to.

It also bugs me that apparently they think Kojima can decide what his funding goes toward, Some Konami rep probably went "you make Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain for the PS360 and Xbox 1/PS4 and ignore the Wii U because it's audience won't guarantee us a profit."

He's Ivan ooze with sunglasses. Don't have anything but mspaint at work, so I can't add sunglasses.

Perhaps. They could do what they did with FE:A, the videos on that were pretty clear.

I'd rather 200-500 megs of the data not be from videos. It's possible they're not on 3DS because he knows a lot of people will be downloading the game, so they'd want to keep the file size at a minimum. Who knows!

because he doesn't have a history with Nintendo man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Snake is a traitorous leech that doesn't belong in Smash! We need to root behind a character that truly celebrates and has always been by Nintendo's side like Sonic!... er I mean Mega Man! oh... So how about a Final Fantasy character?

yup yup

I think this is definitely an area of Smash that has room for improvement. Like, as a start, if Fox can have this, why not give him, and other characters who can speak, special winquotes for characters outside of his series?

The only reason I'm happy about Snake not being in Smash is because it would mean I was right months and months ago when I said he wouldn't come back.

I don't see why people need to acting like douchebag to other people who care about the character.

I'm not acting like a douchebag.
I guess I'm not allowed to be excited for a character to be removed.
I was excited with brawl knowing Pichu and Dr. Mario were cut, so why am i considered a douchebag when Snake is (most likely) cut?

Yes, I'm certain Sakurai decided that cutting both Lucas and Ness made sense and that no one would mind if he removed an entire Nintendo franchise that has been in the series since the first game. Don't know how you guys didn't come to this realization sooner, really. It's pretty obvious this was going to happen.

I think people are getting ahead of themselves with the copyright info which we already know has no Ubi or APE despite that stuff being in the game.

Still I think Snake is probably cut. Sucks because his move set was really unique.

Ness is probably still in the game, I'd be surprised if he was gone.

Yeah! Pac-Man is the true Nintendo ico-oh...

I get Sonic, but why include Mega Man?

Until his untimely death, he always had a strong presence on Nintendo. Sure, Mega Man 8 and X4 went to Playstation, but Nintendo still got Mega Man 64, and all the (imo excellent) Zero and Battle Network games.

Why did I make the decision to read the 3DS boxart thread even knowing that people rooted for a character to get cut? I feel dirty :/

You're right, it's a flimsy argument, which is why I tend to think it's merely a veil for their real feelings: for whatever reason they don't like Snake as a character, or they don't like MGS in general, so they don't want Snake in the game, and get a little thrill seeing him cut. It's not a rational thing; it's sheer aversion to the character. They want Snake out because they don't like him.

That sounds a little mean-spirited, but is it really so different from wanting a character in the game simply because you like that character? There are a lot of people who feel that way about, say, K. Rool, or Geno, or Paper Mario. I could give a nice, rational argument why Paper Mario should be on the roster - he's from a popular and relevant franchise, he could have a unique moveset, etc. - but at the end of the day, I want Paper Mario in because I love the character and I love the games. My desire to see him in is no more rational than others' desire to see Snake cut; it's all about personal feelings.

Mega Man never really returned to Nintendo consoles after the jump from SNES to Playstation despite maintaining a strong presence on handhelds with the likes of Battle Network and Mega Man Zero. The Mega Man X series became almost exclusive to PS1/PS2, Mega Man Legends was predominately on Playstation, and every console Mega Man game released at that point forward was mostly multiplatform.

I wouldn't be mad if Snake remained.

I just would rather not have him, and have him replaced by someone better, even Belmont would be a better choice than Snake.

Yeah, Mega Man absolutely has a place as a Nintendo icon.

I think Sonic too is, arguably, a very Nintendo sort of character. He's known because he was Sega's answer to Mario. He may have fallen now to be a boring mascot from a bad modern series of games, but the core of his history is built around console war with Nintendo.

I can understand Pac Man though. Outside of being an icon of video game history, Pac Man is kind of irrelevant to Nintendo.

I'd give my stock
Not for trophies, but for you! [Snake Cutter]
In Smash 4, there's no way he'll be in
Forum whining, it's the way I cry to you! [Snake Cutter]
He's still, not in the game,
Snake Cutter!

I want snake to return. He just keeps everyone waiting.

Yeah, Mega Man's various games and series have always been overwhelmingly Nintendo-centric:
Classic - 95% Nintendo
X - Around 50% Nintendo
Zero - 100% Nintendo
ZX - 100% Nintendo
Legends - 30% Nintendo
Battle Network - 100% Nintendo
Star Force - 100% Nintendo

And if we're just including the original Mega Man, which is (importantly) who is actually in Smash... out of all 16 core games in his series, all but one debuted first on a Nintendo system. It's pretty clear that Mega Man (especially the original) is a very Nintendo-centric character, which is one reason so many people have been clamoring for him to be in Smash as long as they have.

Okay, I guess it's okay for me to be excited when Ridley and Isaac didn't get in Smash 4. Would you be okay with that? :)

It's called compression man ;P and also you should've expected Nintendo would've wanted to use 2GB carts... the 4GB hasn't been used by anyone but Capcom and Konami lol
This may be a good argument in favour of eliminating physical cartridges. If a game is digital only, then arbitrary constraints on content can be lifted.

Why did I make the decision to read the 3DS boxart thread even knowing that people rooted for a character to get cut? I feel dirty :/

Yeah, I just opened it. Some people are heartless. "I never used character X, therefore, everyone else that enjoyed him shouldn't be able to anymore"

Perhaps. They could do what they did with FE:A, the videos on that were pretty clear.
Haha but FE Awakening had plenty of space left over =P, just pray that Sakurai performs a miracle on the 3DS video compressions. Unless he's still slightly salty of the Brawl cutscenes being watched online etc that he'll go you could always rewatch them online =S

Gotta balance it out though some people will always need physical, download limits and such. Hopefully the game supports DLCs so the use of smaller sized carts was a compromise between Nintendo and Sakurai.

Well, we did get Legends ported to the 64, and don't forget Legends 3 was intended to be Nintendo. :P

:(

Actually, I forgot, there were a few Battle Network games released for the Wonderswan Handhelds, but they were side-entries iirc.

Totally Agreed with you there.

For the record, I'm not saying that Mega Man isn't strongly associated with Nintendo, I'm just providing a counterpoint to the argument that Snake doesn't belong in Smash due to his numerous appearances on competitor hardware.

While I also agree with your sentiment, I kind of understand where they are coming from, in a sense. Smash comes out like once every console generation, and people, especially who have deep Nintendo roots, would want their favorite first party characters getting more consideration in the roster than a 3rd party character. With Snake, those people feel like there are more first party characters around there that deserve more love from Sakurai to be a playable rep than a character that either got late or just totally do not appear in a Nintendo system as of late. Sonic, Pac-man and Megaman got easy from fans simply because of their popular relationship with Nintendo (Sonic's olympic games may have mellowed the hearts of his bitter haters :p). Just think about how polarizing the reaction was when Rayman trophy was shown in a POTD. That reaction may have not been the strong negatively if Ubisoft has not screwed Rayman Legends on the Wii U. And if Bayonetta gets in somehow, I will predict more will love it than hate it.
I will simply call their cases as "third party characters need to prove themselves to Nintendo fans."
