Haha that poster is a mess. I'd rather have no poster at all, that looks fanmade by someone who just learned all about transparency and superposition.

i like the poster. it's really claustrophobic, you can't get a good grasp on any of the elements which makes you uneasy. i haven't read much about deep breath because i like to be spoiler free but it's meant to be a bit darker no, it's not a colourful fun time episode at least, and it's directed by ben wheatley who does a constant sense of unease well in his films, so.

I've seen the episode, and that poster does an absolutely piss-poor job of conveying it's tone. Hell, even the colour palate is all wrong. It's just a total mess.

well, okay, fair enough.

i thought i was just trying to see the positive side to it, but i'm glad i'm now on record defending a random amateur deviantart poster

this isn't embarrassing

I just realized we had a season 8 thread.

I've avoided just about everything regarding the new series. Not even bits from the script leaks. All I've seen is a few shots of Capaldi and the commercial on BBCA (THe "am I a good man?" one).

Never been so excited for a new Doctor.

Bit weird that Moffat's breaking the precedent that RTD set and taking the credit for what I can only imagine are just rewrites. Interesting. Wonder if he'll be on the top-of-the-episode credits.

I swear there was an article the other day that said this season was mostly standalone episodes except for the odd little bit at the beginning and end. So maybe he did those?

He did that bit at the end of Crimson Horror right?

Even then, that's not how Who generally has worked. For instance, most of The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit is RTD, because the credited writer couldn't hack the rewrites/get it right, so RTD just took it over - among other things, creating'/adding the Ood (which is why he's credited as their creator in The Doctor's Wife.) Another example is how all of the way the Family of Blood is structured, and the bizarre way they speak - Brother of Mine, Mother of Mine, etc - was his. As was Martha's sub plot in those episodes... etc etc. In the case of Moffat, to give a recent example, all the scenes where the Cybermen were removing body parts/heads/etc in Gaiman's latest were his, or suggested by him.

So it's interesting to see straight-up co-writer credits for that reason. In the past, it's just assumed Moffat/RTD had their fingerprints on every episode to a degree. RTD took credits on Planet of the Dead/Waters of Mars because he genuinely did full-blown co-write as opposed to just rewrite/provide notes.

Haha, called it!

Also, since I finished my S4-7 rewatch over the weekend, I decided to start a S1 rewatch yesterday night. The first two episodes were... a lot better than I remember actually! Obviously the effects aren't that great, but character and story-wise they're pretty solid. I guess since I have a way better grasp of what Doctor Who is now, they didn't seem like something I'd have to "stomach through" which was basically the way I saw it when I first watched them. Eccleston's Doctor is surprisingly in line with Tennant's and Smith's (other than the "I don't talk about who I am" thing, of course). I dread the moment I'll get to the Slitheen episodes though =/ wtf were they thinking.

This shlocky stuff has been the better stuff recently for me (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship genuinely surprised me and I loved stuff like A Town Called Mercy and Cold War) so color me interested

I rewatched S7 part 1 last night - Dinosaurs and Mercy I think were actually quite fun, good episodes, better than many give credit for.

Maybe Moffat broke the stories/outlines for these episodes and had other writers fill them out as scripts?

That fan poster isn't actually much worse than the posters they were putting out for it each episode last season. Really didn't like the idea that every episode had to be it's own Hollywood summer movie. Glad to hear that Moffat said that that idea is gone now.

Edit: Just saw that episode list with Moffat getting a writing credit on almost every episode. That is indeed weird. I wonder what the story is with that. I knew that he edited every script, just like every showrunner before him (for instance, you can find a lot of lines that are obviously written by Douglas Addams during his run outside of Pirate Planet/City of Death), so I wonder what the difference is now.

just watched School Reunion again

yep, Rose is still terrible

not just her little rivalry with Sarah Jane, but the gigantic fucking attitude she gets when Mickey asks to come along

Generally speaking that's how it's worked a lot in the past anyway, though. Probably at least half of any given series is episode concepts/outlines decided by Moffat/RTD, especially for lesser known or less sci-fi experienced writers.

For what it's worth, Moffat isn't credited for those episodes on the actual scripts themselves that leaked so... it is strange. Hum.

As long as the people on those episodes aren't losing money by sharing credit - it's a non-issue.

People basically assume he writes everything anyway.

I can hear Moffat's internal monologue when he's reading someone else's script and making notes.

Moffat: "the problem with this story is that's it's too good. I'll just take a pass at it, tighten it up, take out that line, add a line here and there. Just add some character colour. Hmm, needs some pointless and stilted verse added. Something that sounds poetic by having anachronistic use of verbs. Ooh a voice over from a child, no wait, someone who was a child when something happened but they now remember as an adult. Gotta give a bland companion character by giving them a catch-phrase. "I'll get me coat?" That's brilliant. Oh wait, that's taken. God, Coupling was really funnier than people remember. Let's totally subvert established continuity, rules and character trait just for this episode. Moffat, I am brilliant."

Does that Radio Times issue have a complete reprint of the 10th anniverary special? Cool.

I laughed way too much at this.

Sounds pretty accurate.

They shouldn't be, as long as the rewrite is by the showrunner.

(The BBC generally pays 100% of the fee unless the script genuinely fails the commissioning brief, but the residuals can be split if there's a true significant rewrite.)

She's so bad in retrospect. So bad. I loved her character back in the day, but I can't stand her nowadays.

Hm... Last minute cinema booking for Deep Breath, or watch it wrapped in my University of Galifrey hoodie with snacks at home.

I was considering going to the cinema for the screening but found out they're charging $25 a ticket for it. Crazy prices, I could see 3 full length movies in that cinema for the same price.

Yeah, I get the slight appeal of watching with a crowd but its bonkers pricing everywhere for cinemas in general. I cant justify one episode of television on it.

I assume Chris Addison is there because of the Thick of It connection, that's just silly.

I'd like Rose Leslie, but they're not gonna cast another Scottish redhead already. And I don't she's even available.

Listing Karen is just dumb.

I got a good chuckle seeing Kim Kardashian, even at those odds.
