Holy shit.

So true.

Yikes. I am still thinking that the holocaust is a special kind of atrocity that is worse than the opression of the blacks in modern america, based on how effective and mechanic it was. Which does not mean that the opression of african americans was something small. I just want you to think about how the holocaust worked and that the current situation is different.

If you want to tell me your opinion or want to point out mistakes in my thoughts, do it per PM. I didn't want to derail the discussion and will go back into lurking.

So, just let ne confirm a second time, just to be more sure: you are you saying that modern racism in the united states of america is as bad as the holocaust?

No, but it can easily get there. People seem to believe this fairy tale that just b/c it's the 21st century, we can't have any more atrocities on that scale. What's happening right now in Syria says otherwise. Or maybe they think that can't happen in a Western country anymore.

Well, not to be crass, but events like the Holocaust didn't just pop up out of thin air; smaller, less violent and less racially-charged events occurred to a frequency and enough apathetic response (and just pathetic government intervention) that things eventually led to the Holocaust. I don't want another Holocaust, Holomodor or anything, and we don't need it in America, but if situations like what's happening in Ferguson keep happening, and most of the population keep being apathetic and law enforcement keeps stepping up its abuse of power, it's at least partly probable we could end up with a 21st-century Holocaust-type scenario in America. That in itself is chilling, and all it'd take is a bit more build-up.

So, all in all, it's not completely inaccurate to compare this to the Holocaust; they share a few seeds and root causes in common. Not to mention a few incidental parallels.

What happened?

They said they were marching toward the command center. Police moved their cars to let them march and then moved them back to block them in. They said the same thing as several reporters that no molotovs were thrown and they just started being fired on and they had nowhere to go. An older man was talking about a can was coming toward his face and he blocked it with his hand and was showing the burns.

Um, sure, but nobody here ever tried to equate the Ferguson situation to the Holocaust. Nobody was even discussing that until you came in here with this --

Not wanting to start anything, but is it really important that the lady is a holocaust survivor? Did the police hear that she survived the holocaust and then got her into custody?
But by god, please don't try to put the racism in america is luke the holocaust. Its bad, but by no means that bad.

Holocaust Survivor is an important status. If a holocaust survivor does anything of societal importance, their status is going to be mentioned in the media.

Mentioning her status as a holocaust survivor while she's protesting a separate civil rights issue is not comparing the holocaust to ferguson. This is a completely ridiculous train of thought, and you should know better.

And no, I'm not going to PM this to you.

That's awful, especially with the National Guard reportedly being there to protect the police command center.

I think they were talking about last night so it was before the NG came. I don't know how much of it is true it was just a group of citizens he was talking to.

For someone who wasnt looking to start something, you seen an awful lot like someone trying to start something. Take your opression Olympics and ride on out of here.

100% this. Someone who survived the holocaust is a big fucking deal. Anytime their name is mentioned in relation to anything, that will be mentioned as well. It's like a damned Medal of Honor.

Agreed. That said, all this holocaust talk its relation to race relations is just going to serve to further muddy the already fairly murky discourse that our discussions here already take.

Anderson Cooper doing 2 hours about it. Pretty good response from the Brown family attorney over that radio caller "Jocie"

"Al Sharpton is an abulance chaser and I wish he'd never gotten involved."

What the fuck is this, stream guy? Having the host on a national politics show on your side isn't a fucking bad thing.

Jesus.

Can we talk about how bad this whole situation is without talking about how not bad it is by comparing to the Holocaust? I think the articles/posts in question only mention that the 90 year old lady is a Holocaust survivor, not that the situation in Ferguson is like the Holocaust.

Ehhh I'm black and I can tell you many people in the black community feel the same way.
I appreciate what Al has done but often times people in the black community feel him and Jesse Jackson just do these things to stay relevant.

They seem to go to where an injustice occurred, make a few statements and then that's it. They don't really do much else aside from that.

I was just thinking - how would the police know that she is a holocaust survivor? Is she really that famous that the policemen should know her? She looks just like some women to my eye.

Where did I say any of that?
I just commented on a detail that in my eyes is useless in the context. Whats important is the situation at hand. We should worry about all the people that get arrestes for simply protesting, not focus on a single case because slightly related.

edit: I am also in line with how Corvo interpreted my post.

Alright then, my apologies.

(but it does kinda show how far things have fallen)

It was a test by the NSA. You're both now in the Government Watch list and in the No Fly List. Expect a van with tinted windows to park in front of your home.

This is about looking at that Revolutionary Communist Party site isn't it? I was only curious and wanted more proof that those people were involved in causing many riots and looting among the peaceful ones D: (they were and white anarchists with anger problems)

I sorta gotta agree. Or if he was involved to coordinate a larger peaceful protest presence across several cities. It just seems he's like "Hey! I'm here!!" Instead of wanting to push it forward. But then, I've never really liked Sharpton.

I guess my issue is that this seems unfair. Politics Nation had coverage on Trayvon Martin every day, on Renisha McBride every day until there was no news to report, and has been on top of this story during it's development and until now.

What the hell else is he supposed to do? I've really appreciated his efforts with all of the racial inustice.

Attacking your ally isn't going to help your cause.

Watching MSNBC and I can't believe some of the bullshit coming out of Nixon's mouth. He keeps blaming the public for violence, even claiming that the protesters have guns that they have pointed at these police.

Hedy is not only a holocaust survivor but also a political activist known for her support of the Palestinian cause. A great and strong woman.

Hey I appreciate what he HAS done. People in our community feel hey could do more though. It would be amazing if he was right there during the marching and peaceful protests at night.
