Was a dick move, but a PRESS sign means about as much as if Tim walked around with a SWAT. It isn't actual credentials.
There are myriad things that qualify for "press credentials." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_pass Wikipedia, I know. But still helpful.

A patch that says PRESS is not press credentials. Even if he lost his original credentials an officer looking to only let press through does not know that, nor would they know its the truth.
It's not evidence of him being part of the press though?
I mean look, the cop was being a fucking asshole don't get me wrong, but it was a patch that said PRESS on it, not his "evidence" of being part of the press.

The point isn't the credientials, the point is the amount of respect someone in that position has for the people they're supposed to be protecting.
They act like they're a military force commencing operations and look what situation they've stoked now.
Is there a legal statute or reason for press to told to remove themselves from the area like that?

He was with two people with press credentials so saying the pass doesn't mean shit and ripping it off was dumb. All he had to do was use his brain for two seconds instead of just reacting the way he did. It was an asshole move on his part.

Usually journos will have to show up and register at some place (like a tent or etc) and then they will get an official approved card or pass which will allow them to move around.
.. I have no idea how it works in a riot situation, but I assume it's something similar-ish. The Police on the field know what the official pass looks like, and this is what the cop was looking for.

Im not siding with any given side hear, looks like a horrible situation thats being escalated by all three sides. Im commenting on this specific incident in which a badge that says PRESS was removed then handed back to someone because they couldnt provide press credentials.

They've thought it's worthless for sometime now, but that is a discussion for another thread.
I can't believe how the cops are just operating as if this is Armageddon. The response is only escalating the problems they're having with the troublemakers and drawing more of them in. The actual protesters are getting caught in the crossfire.
Nope. If you were watching the stream you would have seen that the cops were being shot at. Some cops than ran over to tim and the other media that were on the ground ducking. The cops checked if tim and the others were all right and than told them they needed to leave now.
That is a very powerful image. That is a cover to TIME image.
