I was watching the stream the first night of the curfew and someone threw one (I think it was one, or something else that causes fire) at a restaurant but the ohter protesters immediately put it out (while they were being fired at with smokebombs/tear gas).

They don't, and this in and of itself is a violation of the rights of the media. Nothing is going to be done about it though, the police in Ferguson are unabashedly doing whatever they feel like at this point even when being filmed.
