Chris Addison... Because he was in the Thick of It. Jesus. Not got two to rub together have they?

EDIT: I know I know he's in an episode

They should have Paul Higgins, a.k.a. Jamie McDonald, a.k.a. the crossest man in Scotland (The Thick of It/In The Loop) as the Master.

Hot off the presses... Moffat's guide to this season for the Radio Times!

Deep Breath
Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Ben Wheatley
"Who frowned me this face?"
In late-1890s London, swashbuckling detectives Vastra, Jenny and Strax are summoned to the banks of the Thames for a big surprise, and then an even bigger one. A new Doctor is in town, with mayhem in his wake. As Clara struggles to recognise the man she thought she knew so well, killers stalk the capital. A slaughterhouse restaurant and a buried spaceship lead the Doctor into a confrontation with a long-forgotten foe... but how far is this new man ready to go to protect his friends?

Into the Dalek
Written by Phil Ford and Steven Moffat
Directed by Ben Wheatley
Introducing Samuel Anderson as Danny Pink
"Imagine the worst thing in the universe, and then don't bother because you're looking at it right now. This is evil refined as engineering."
What's the most dangerous place in the universe? Where is the last place the Doctor should ever stand? He's faced with his deadliest mission yet- a journey into the heart of darkness, one even he is scared to make. In the dying days of a bitter war, a beleaguered human army has one last hope: a Dalek so damaged it has become good. But can it be trusted? To find out, a miniaturised team, led by the Doctor and Clara, embark on a fantastic voyage into the Dalek itself...

Robot of Sherwood
Written by Mark Gatiss
Directed by Paul Murphy
Guest starring Tom Riley (Robin), Ben Miller (Sheriff)
"There's no such thing as Robin Hood!"
They meet at last! The island's greatest hero and defender of the innocent comes face to face with Robin Hood! The only trouble is, according to the Doctor, Robin Hood can't be real. In a sun-dappled Sherwood Forest, the Doctor discovers an evil plan from beyond the stars. But with all of Nottingham at stake (and possibly Derby), there's no time for the adventurers to get into a fight about who is real and who isn't- which is probably why they do very little else!

Listen
Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Douglas Mackinnon
"What's that in the mirror, and the corner of your eye? What's the footstep following, but never passing by?"
What happens when the Doctor's alone- pacing the TARDIS by candlelight, poking the shadows with a stick, listening for a footfall among all those endless, empty rooms. What scares the grand old man of space and time? What horrors lurk under his bed? Ghosts of the past and future crowd into the lives of the Doctor and Clara: a terrified caretaker in a children's home, the last man standing in the universe, and a little boy who doesn't want to join the army...

Time Heist
Written by Stephen Thompson and Steven Moffat
Directed by Douglas Mackinnon
Guest starring Keeley Hawes
"Welcome to the bank of Karabraxos."
The Bank of Karabraxos is the deadliest bank in the cosmos- only a fool or a genius would attempt to rob it. Fortunately for the Doctor, he's both. With the help of a beautiful shape-shifter and a cyber-augmented gamer, the Doctor and Clara fight their way past the most dangerous security system ever devised. But nothing even the Doctor has encountered can prepare them for the Teller: a creature of terrifying power that can detect guilt...

The Caretaker
Written by Gareth Roberts and Steven Moffat
Directed by Paul Murphy
"Human beings have incredibly short life spans. Frankly, you should all be in a permanent state of panic. Tick tock, tick tock!"
Clara has it all under control: her life at school, her life in space: her new boyfriend and her mad old Time Lord. Everything is humming along just fine, so long as everybody never actually meets. And then, one morning, just before assembly, Coal Hill welcomes a new relief caretaker with a Scottish accent. With Clara's world about to explode around her, terrifying events near the school make it clear that the rest of the world is about to do the same. The Skovox Blister is ready to destroy humanity- and worse, any second now, Danny Pink and the Doctor are going to meet...

Kill The Moon
Written by Peter Harness
Directed by Paul Wilmshurst
Guest starring Hermione Norris and Tony Osoba
"This little planetoid that's been tagging along beside you for a hundred million years, which gives you light at night and seas to sail, is in the process of falling to bits."
In the near future, the Doctor and Clara arrive on a decrepit shuttle making a suicide mission to the Moon. Crashing on the lunar surface, they find a mining base full of eviscerated corpses, spider-like creatures scuttling in the dark, and a terrible dilemma. When Clara turns to the Doctor for help, she gets the shock of her life. Is the man she's trusted for so long really a hero after all? Is he even her friend?

Mummy on the Orient Express
Written by Jamie Mathieson

One morning in London, and every city and town in the world, the human race wakes up to its most surprising invasion yet: the trees have moved back in. Everywhere, in every land, a forest has grown overnight and taken back the Earth- an impossible stranglehold of vegetation. The Doctor soon realises that the final days of humanity have arrived...

Ok these are definitely the ones I'm excited for which is pretty impressive Season 8 is gonna be amazing!!

They all sound so good. Especially the Finale.

Another sinister organization?

Not too sure how to feel about that. The Silence promised so much but was a bit of a let down.

Listen sounds like an episode Moffat detractors would come up with to mock him, haha. Hope it's great. Flatline sounds pretty cool too. And I'm a sucker for heist stories so Time Heist should be up my alley. Can't wait!

Cool teasers. I've gone from thinking Robot of Sherwood is guaranteed pap to at least being slightly interested if its as tongue in cheek as it sounds.

As for new companions, I will, as ever, demand Sheridan Smith even though it'll probably never happen. Both due to Lucie and her being crazy in demand these days.

If not, I think maybe someone older. Someone along the lines of Catherine Tate (not to deem her old or anything) - instantly recognisable, perhaps from a comedy background. Sharon Horgan would be awesome.

oh lawd please

it is indeed lit differently. orange and blue instead of turquoise.

[edit] have i mentioned yet how good the latest TARDIS interior is? i'm so glad that they finally have a set designer on board who thinks that the most advanced piece of technology in the universe should actually look like an advanced piece of technology instead of made out of some stuff he found at his nan's house.

Robot of Sherwood sounds like this year's Victory of the Daleks/Curse of the Black Spot. The rest seem promising though.

I think it will still be at least a bit entertaining, if for no other reason but having Capaldi around.
And in a way, I think Gatiss is getting better, too. I wasn't crazy about his episodes in S7B, but I thought they were certainly better than his earlier scripts.

Yeah, I think he's getting marginally better. I really like Cold War actually, and An Adventure in Space and Time (though not a Who episode) was really great.

But then there was this Crimson Horror, which was just...awful.

Oh come on, I thought that was Trenzalore? -_-

Or the Pandorica. Or Lake Silencio.

Stopped reading the summaries after the second one because I want to be surprised, just read the small quotes for each episode. Getting excited!

I'm continuing with my second(!) watchthrough of all the classic era episodes. I'm currently at Wheel in Space. I didn't remember much of it beyond space station - cybermen - introduction of Zoe, but I'm rather enjoying it. This is one of the base under siege stories (that are all a bit too similar) that I'm most looking forward to being found. I like the effects they use for spaceships/stations in the 60s, and even though it's not a particularly great cyberman story, it's still a lot of fun.

Edit: Wait, I'm halfway through the second episode now, and I'm starting to remember more details about this. Scratch what I said earlier, I think this is one of the bad ones.

Not as bad as 'The Space Pirates though. That one can remain lost forever.

"What's that in the mirror, and the corner of your eye? What's the footstep following, but never passing by?"

Gentlemen, we have a rhyme! Over/under on it being said by a child?

Other than that, the episodes all sound interesting.

I think I'm going to have to buy this series the minute it's available for purchase on Amazon rather than waiting for it to go Prime or come to Netflix, I REALLY want to see Capaldi!!!!

World Tour in Rio was a very fun time yesterday. Moffat was totally different from what I expected, people usually go on about him being grumpy but he was so funny, played with the audience, smiled and laughed a lot. Capaldi is so jovial, it's like he's 21 years old. His mannerisms, the things he say, very, very cool guy. Jenna is super charming and gorgeous. She can wear a potato sack and make it look good. People were so cheery throughout the event and the three of them were really into it during the Q&A with the hosts.

They aired the first episode of next season on the big screen before they came on stage and it was cool to watch it with an audience. I won't go into detail about the episode for now but (light spoilers for Doctor Who Series 8 episode 1)
they totally fixed Clara. Not only she's an actual character now, she was pretty much the best thing about the episode to me. There was a sequence with her that left me shook. Hopefully this quality holds during the rest of the season. The Paternoster Gang was the weakest thing about the episode but that's ok, didn't really hurt it. Also cool to see the things Capaldi said in an interview the other day: longer scenes, more gravitas, situations being solved w/ real talk.
(Sorry for not using the spoiler thread but I only watched the first episode and there's leak talk over there.)

Great time that I was happy to be a part of, occasionally waving my sonic screwdriver in the air during the frequent cheers.

I filmed a short video of Capaldi walking on stage (rad moment, we were watching a montage on the screen then he appeared all of a sudden almost right behind me), and a friend filmed his thank you speech at the end. I'll post a youtube link later.

Can't believe it's finally back in just a few days. Well.. Few days + 1 extra morning for me (Amazon Video is how I watch)

Speaking of which, is the new season available for pre-order on Amazon Video (so I can get that 5% discount/etc)? I see http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MASEK74/?tag=neogaf0e-20 but that includes extra paid content I'd rather not be forced to buy.

It's extra on Amazon instant?
The iTunes season pass version has a couple of short interviews and 2 X 45 minute docos.

Missed a lot last few days. Episode descriptions all sound promising to me. Boy I hope that Mummy episode and the tree episode are good.

My only problem with Capaldi's outfit is that the vest isn't the same shade of black as the pants. In fact, it looks like he's wearing a $400 jacket with a $60 shirt and a $150 vest with a $15 pair of pleats from Walmart

Of course I'm an old doughy straight white guy from the South, what do I know about style

Doctor Who Confidential is back!

Sort of!

But a lot shorter!

And on iPlayer!

Why am I writing like this!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/articles/BBC-iPlayer-launches-exclusive-Doctor-Who-Extra-series

The BBC has today announced Doctor Who Extra - a brand new series, exclusively on BBC iPlayer. Doctor Who Extra is much more than a ‘making of’ show as we follow Peter Capaldi every step of the way throughout the creation of his first season as the Doctor. Over the course of 12 programmes we trace the highs and lows of Doctor Who’s most ambitious run of episodes yet, getting the inside take on series 8 from the people who made it.

The Doctor Who Extra team had unparalleled access to stars including Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson (series regular Danny Pink) plus guests Frank Skinner, Keeley Hawes, Michelle Gomez, Ben Miller, Foxes and many more. Writers, such as Lead Writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat, and directors also contribute as they spill the beans on the on and off-screen drama.

Casual viewers will enjoy the fun, fast pace and lighter side of Doctor Who Extra but there’s plenty for fans, too, as we take a quick dip into the archive for every edition, reflecting on how Doctor Who’s history is echoed in this current series.

Packed with emotion, great stories and a real sense of ‘access all areas’, Doctor Who Extra is essential viewing for everyone who’s ever watched Doctor Who and wondered what it’s a like to be a part of the team that brings this global phenomena to our screens.

Doctor Who Extra is produced by BBC Cymru Wales and executive produced by Steven Moffat, Brian Minchin and Jo Pearce. Each 10 minute Doctor Who Extra episode will be available after that week’s Doctor Who episode on BBC One.

*Audiences will also be able to access Doctor Who Extra via the BBC’s Red Button.

Nice to hear about Doctor Who Extra.

Also I didn't know Sylvester Mccoy, Sophie Aldred and Anthony Ainley shared the same birthday (today).

Oh god Jenny and Vraska? People who have seen the first episode: are they more bearable than usual? Do they freak out any stuffy 1800s londoners with their marriage so the audience can smugly laugh at their own progressivism?

Vastra's sort of as normal. Still a bit sit in her chair saying some whispy bollocks. Jenny balances her out nicely, particularly with some comedy.

Wait...didn't the 11th Doctor get a call about the Mummy on the Orient Express when Amy and Rory were with him?
