Captain America: The Winter Soldier |OT| "Before we get started...

The only question I have is do I get it in 3d or get it 2d.

The 3D in this movie was nothing to write home about. Compared to something like GOTG, which I think is the best 3D post-conversion of a MCU film, the 3D in Winter Soldier is barely noticeable.

Most of the action scenes are indoors, in dark lighting or in drab urban settings so it's not really the kinda film that benefits from 3D.

Thank you, you answered another question of mine. I'll get cap 2d, gotg 3d then. Thanks

I certainly understand why some people might not enjoy first avenger but if you're willing to accept it as a nostalgia piece that borders on being a propaganda film, it's so much fun.

That's something I really love about Marvel movies. They're not all cookie cutter template movies with interchangeable heroes. They tend to inhabit different genres and have different thematic tones.

Bingo, despite what some detractors would have you believe.

I finally saw this last night via iTunes. I really enjoyed it, it had a decent plot that hung together (Something I thought Thor Dark World didn't have). Was well-cast, well-made, great action (and I occasionally zone out during action that goes on and on).

It was certainly darker than the previous MCU films, almost like a post-Nolan DC film. It certainly could have used a bit more humour, since Captain America in the 21st Century is made for fish-out-of-water gags and I wasn't a big fan of the musical score (which is weird because Henry Jackman's score for Xmen First Class was one of my favourites).

But overall, a really enjoyable film. Pity about no One-shot

I thought Winter Soldier was great. Real good use of Scarlett and Samuel J. They've built that universe nicely and now have a solid supporting cast, and they used it perfectly.

Best of the Marvel flicks so far IMO, and it gives me hope that they've got the writers and the formula figured out now to continue making quality movies.

And, generally, they've gotten directors who fit those genres. Kenneth Branagh or Alan Taylor on Thor is kinda on-point. Joe Johnston on a WW2-set Captain America movie makes total sense. Getting a guy with horror sensibilities on Dr. Strange. James Gunn on a weird misfit sci-fi adventure.

Marvel's strength is largely getting the right people in key roles, both in-front and behind the camera. Even if those people end up making questionable decisions, on paper, they people they cast and hire makes total sense.

I think Cap2 is the best MCU movie, followed by Cap1. (then ironman 1 and avengers).

Cap was just characterised in a way that actually made you want to root for him.

Yeah, that was pretty accurate, and I never actually thought about those "nitpicks" before but they were legitimate concerns. Oh well, not everything can be perfect.

eh... I don't know.. those nitpicks feel like they weren't paying attention...

a) Why would they set it up any more than they already did? It not being totally obvious is kinda the point. Not to say it was their plan from the start, but Sitwell hiring the two crooks in the Item 47 one-shot very well could've been a move for Hydra's benefit. Or the Senator demanding that Tony Stark hand over the Iron Man armor. Those feel much more like moves these characters were making for Hyrdra now that we know the twist. Not to say that was always the plan, but it sure as hell added another layer to those characters' actions in retrospect.

b) a handgun vs. what is likely a high-powered rifle, probably with armor-piercing rounds? Body armor or not (do we know he wasn't wearing any?), you're not blocking those bullets.

c) Why would Hydra put evidence of their existence in SHIELD's files?

d) Hydra is probably way better at indoctrinating the right people who will keep a secret?

e) They were already researching it. Who's to say that they weren't going to use it to their advantage further down the line if Loki hadn't intervened? SHIELD was going to make weapons, which is probably exactly what Hydra would want. I mean they're clearly using Loki's staff, another item SHIELD recovered. They're able to research this stuff under the guise of SHIELD without anyone being the wiser.

f) Nick Fury still had value as a leader and tactician. As long as he wasn't aware of Hydra's existence, he couldn't do anything to stop them. And the second he got curious, they tried to eliminate him. Tony Stark didn't know about Hydra, so why would they need to stop him until Project Insight? Cap was working for SHIELD, and in a sense, was working FOR Hydra. And again, the second he got curious, they tried to eliminate him. Project Insight was only a recent initiative, so that whole "eliminate all threats" plan had to yet to be put into effect. As for the Avengers, bad guys or not, Hydra needed to stop that alien invasion just as much as anyone on earth. "Your enemies are our enemies, Nick." Hydra wants control, but that doesn't mean they want the entirety of the human race wiped out or enslaved under someone else's rule. As long as the Avengers were operating under "SHIELD's interests", Hydra had no reason to oppose the plan. And even then, if Project Insight had gone forward, they either would've eliminated the Avengers most likely to oppose them, or threaten even more civilian deaths if they don't cooperate.
I'm with them on the gum thing though

Does the Vudu version come with a preorder at Wal-Mart like Pacific Rim did or is a seperate purchase to get the Vudu version? I really want to get it early but if its purely digital no thanks.

Completely agree. It was extreme reaching but funny anyway.

It's like something a kid from the 40s would do :p.

I saw this again last night/this morning. This and GoTG are such different movies. I like to think that CA2 and GoTG are happening at the same time. I think this one is still my favorite of the Marvel films.

No dude, all Marvel movies have the same "tone"! *cough*

Something is just so.... off.... with Amazon lately. I love them but I guess I've been hearing some negativity regarding them like that deal with book publishers or authors and now this.

They've grown too powerful. They're being seduced by the dark side of shipping.

I bought the HD version over on PSN last night and watched it. What a great film. It was like Iron-Man's humor, but with action sequences and Scarlett Johansson instead.

Anyone know when new movies go up for rental on PSN, ITunes or Amazon.

want to watch it....but 20 dollars is a bit more than I wanted to pay.

It's worth the $20 (at 1080p )...unless you don't plan to watch it again in the next 5 years.

Hold up...

The HD version of the movie on PSN is 6.2GB

Is that blu ray quality at that size?

Bit the bullet and bought it.

was worth it.

damn good movie. Surprising mix of action and legit mystery. CG was a bit wonky at times. Also Cap occasionally took backseat to others and the Winter Soldier..wasn't used enough. But still a good movie.

Marvel is on a roll for me.

I actually don't mind, considering they're fighting back against large studios and publishers who have traditionally inflated/propped up prices.

Can't wait to add Guardians of The Galaxy to the collection. Has anyone done a MCU marathon before? I'm tempted to go through every film just before Age of Ultron

They hint at the
Hydra twist
in The Avengers, don't they? What with
SHIELD amassing Hydra weaponry
. Heck, doesn't Captain America say something along the lines of
"You are becoming them"
, or maybe I'm just thinking that last part up.

Nice Steelbook collection, I hate myself for not buying the Phase I Solofilms as Steelbooks... Started collecting these from The Avengers onwards...

Edit: Does anybody know what the name for these Papercards for the Steelbooks are, which come with Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Cap 2? In Germany, Iron Man 3 came without one, so I want to make a custom, but I need the name of these kind of papercards^^

Did this back the weekend when I saw The Avengers in cinema.

I think about make another one when Age of Ultron come out, but maybe at this point the MCU is to large for a marathon.

Got my Steelbook too:

Those cardboard thing? I immediately throw them away because they have the potential of scratching the Steelbook. Especially, the glossy Steelbooks.

I really wanted the Cap steelbook, but the spine bugged me :/

Also, I keep the cardboard slips because I shelve my steelbooks next to each other and when I slide them out, the slip prevents scratches.

I would start with Avangers and work my way from there.

IIRC, the US/Canadian one has a title instead of character faces. Don't quote me on that though but Thor 2 US/Canadian Steelbook was like this.

ATM, I still keep my Steelbooks inside the plastic case they came in. I haven't got display rack so I'm not bothered that they don't look good just as long as they're not scratched. In the future I'm thinking if getting those plastic slip cases that PS3/PS4 Steelbooks from EU often comes packaged in.

After GotG, I caught up with all the MCU movies I haven't seen with the exception of Incredible Hulk.

Mackie definitely nails that last line.

"You don't have to come with me."
"I know. When do we start?"

Mackie was one of the best parts of the movie altogether. The fact that his willingness to follow Captain America into the jaws of Hydra at the drop of a hat comes across as genuine faith in Steve rather than just hero worship or outright stupidity blows my mind. I'm not even a huge fan of Falcon the character but the movie made me really love him.

I just got this recently

So I have to wait until some time after Avengers 2 to get the Phase 2 box.

EDIT: Another annoying thing is Iron Man 1 & 2 are missing the second discs that came with the special editions, so not as many extras =\

I fall in this camp.

imo...I'm not big on supers whose main talent is flight. Just doesn't interest me to see.

Mackie did a good job with the character though.

If I could have just one super power though, I think flight would be the one I'd want.

Mackie definitely nails that last line.

"You don't have to come with me."

Yeah, I whispered out a "fuck yeah" each time. He was my favorite part of the movie, he has a great personality. I hope we see more of him in some nonaction scenes. I like his friendship with Cap.

For sure.

"Captain America needs my help. There's no better reason to get back in."

That goes right along Steve's line in the first movie "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from." where I immediately was just like "I'm totally behind this guy..."

I agree, and that's what makes each one interesting and unique in and of themselves.

I also like that they cut to the credits before Steve's "We just did" from the trailer. That got a chuckle out of me the first time, because i remembered some people complaining about the line when that trailer came out.

Yeah, that's mainly the reason I didn't get it and got the individual editions instead. And mind that IM1 is actually missing 2 discs, not one :P
