There is no other way than shooting him. In every other country in the world without armed police the officers would have just politely asked the guy to surrender as he stabbed them to death.

NY Post reported they had a credible source very close to the officer that made these claims, and FoxNews picked it up and ran with it. He also went on to say he spent the whole night in the hospital. Both copies of it were heavily pro-Law Enforcement, and included the timeless phrase "feared for his/her life", which used by police officers so they can claim protection under the law which states they can only use lethal force when they fear they are at risk of death or greivous bodily harm.

If any of it's true (which I severely doubt), the entire protest could have been avoided had the FPD just pointed that out in the first place. If it were true and FPD just didn't report it, I wouldn't be surprised since they have managed to suck at

The only times I can think of are the Prohibition-era Gangs which had the first automatic weapons which were eventually routed out thanks to RICO and undercover work by police all around the country, and the North Hollywood Shootout. The NHS was the driving force behind getting police departments high powered assault rifles and body armor. It was also an incredibly niche situation, and I think people overreacted to it.
 
I wish people would realize that things dont have to be like this. Cops dont need to shoot citizens to take care of situations. If you just looked outside of the US you would see tons of examples how police dont have to use lethal force when dealing with the mentally unstable or even lethal situations.

Things dont have to be like this. There are solutions. So please dont condone the needles killing of people.

A man with a knife could destroy this entire city if we don't do something.
 
All active on-duty police should have body cameras, period. It'd reduce and clear up so much shit. There's no good excuse against it. It's 2014, they weigh next to nothing and many cops already have them, needs to be made mandatory throughout the country.

It's been awhile since I refreshed and saw this but I've been sitting here writing about it elsewhere. WTF? I wonder how the PD is going to spin it when the cop's story as told through the police chief is clearly contradicted.

Looks like things are getting a bit hectic already out there, seems like a counter protestor showed up and provoked the crowd a bit, a man tried to take her sign away and was arrested. Some other incident seems to be occuring right now on CNN, can't tell what.

Update: police whisked her away now, likely for her own safety.

The officers should. Police are trained to protect, they are trained to help. If that man is on the edge then you talk first, you don't immediately unload your gun on him. They are not to shoot first and ask questions later.

If talking does not work then you call for back up. You can subdue the person through self defense training without causing serious injury. If that is not the option then you can taze the person and take them into custody for the protection of the citizens around him and the person them self.
 
I'm personally of the opinion that a knife-wielding individual is a life threatening situation, and while my initial thought would be to subdue them immediately in another manner, using your gun is a valid option at that time. That situation has escalated enough.

Under no circumstances should you allow the individual to get close (and by this I mean 10 yards or so), or attempt to subdue him physically while he still has the knife in hand. That equals a stabbing.

I can't believe what I'm reading. Holy fuck. A man just got killed because of two trigger-happy incompetent fucks who didn't know of other ways to put down a mentally unstable man than empty a whole fucking clip into him.

If they had gone on fucking youtube and searched for "non-lethal takedown", paid attention in officer training, or even read the goddamn world news on how other countries face similar situations, those two murderers would have had a damn clue that killing is the last fucking resort.

Instead they just roll up on the curb and 15 seconds later empty a clip into the poor guy.

Fuck this world if this is the only possible outcome that people can think of.

You have no Fucking clue what you are talking about. Call backup? What does that do? He was already closing his distance on the officers. Backup would mean more officers pointing guns.

You don't tase someone with a knife. This was already explained. You don't let a person with a knife get close to you, period.

What self defense training safely protects you from a knife? Police officers are not Judo warriors, this isn't the movies here. I don't quite think people realize how fast you can kill someone with a knife.

Someone posted numbers earlier but like 75% of the arrests came from the local area (not necessarily Ferguson).

Well in general out of towners aren't a problem. Hell I would go join the protests if I could and I would be a law abiding citizen even with the anger I feel.

Unfortunately not everyone who shows up is doing so for noble reasons. We have white supremacists trying to stoke the flames and get a shooting war. You have general anarchists who want anarchy, Being an out of towner isn't an automatic indictment that you are trouble. The problem is most of the trouble makers just happen to be out of towners.

Which gets covered casually but they still talk about The violent protests and rioting of Ferguson etc. It gives the town a bad name
