Polytron Hacked?

You know I understand where some people come from with regards to Phil's public actions, especially in regards to his responses to people on Twitter but I think you all need to take a step back and look at it from his perspective.

You are a simple, independent games developer who put your blood, sweat and tears into making your game. Its delayed, he thinks it won't even come out at one point but it eventually does and it’s a critical and commercial success.

Now he has all this attention from people and the most important thing to remember is that not all of this is going to be good. Now of course you can say "Well he should ignore it" and for his sake he probably should have but regardless, these comments sent to him are directed at HIM, even though the people judging him actually have no idea about who he really is as a person other than a few examples. Now you can say he reacted badly but if I had the freedom to not worry about being fired, I would probably end up telling them to go fuck themselves, call them a bunch of cunts etc. and I suspect if many of us here were in his situation of not really having to worry about money/work, we would end up not giving a shit what we said to the people hating on us for no reason other than some small example of who we are.

I honestly think that what causes a lot of problems in this world with things such as reactions to people or hell, even reviewing forms of entertainment is that many people really can't put themselves into others shoes. They think they can, and that if they were in the situation they would be doing things differently but it's clear that they really haven't put as much thought into the subject as the actually person involved has. Phil makes games because he loved it, made a game that many loved and yet he then had to deal with a tonne of people, most likely young people with little life experience, criticising him on a constant basis.

How do you think this must feel to him as a person? How would you feel in this situation? It's easy for people to portray themselves as being perfect online, never making decisions based on emotion or past experiences but that's bullshit! Thinking about it sitting at your computer screen is a hell of a lot different to living situations day in and day out. You might spend 5 minutes a week thinking about what to do in this situation but you haven't spent the rest of the week dealing with the problems that he reacted to in the first place.

Yeah he has said some shitty things online to people, but then a hell of a lot more have said worse things to him far more often.

It's a bit weird and a shame that we get confirmation through this leak that apparently the cancellation of Fez II was for real last year, since there's content of that in the folder listing someone posted in this thread earlier.. Anyway, hopefully this didn't really ruin Fish's life and he is able to get his affairs to get back in order.

I just saw someone say that they have no doubt that Phil staged this whole thing and that "Neogaf and anyone who follows the gaming media is blind to it all". Is this really something people still think?? Jesus.

There's a lot of insane, mentally deluded people everywhere on the interwebs.

He has told people to kill themselves SEVERAL times. I really don't think he was referencing a cartoon. Also
phil-fish-tweet.jpg

Okay, yeah. He's an asshole. Never buying any games from him again.

The only thing worse than that subreddit is the Ferguson subreddit linked on it...

Reddit is a shit hole. How are these subreddits not closed down?

He is an asshole and I will never buy any of his games. But, it must be said that no one deserves anything illegal to happen to them like a hack.

Absolutely. I totally agree that what happened to him is awful, and I hope any damages are recovered. I just didn't know how horrible he came off as. I can't get over how gross some of the stuff he's saying is.

Hm, interesting observations.
The very first image is saying that shared corporate details (corporate twitter, email, server access) were compromised but personal account details were not...how is that fishy? It's common for multiple people to have access to corporate logins...especially since early comments indicated that the passwords appears to be generated by a password manager. All the hacker would need was to crack the password manager and they would get instant access to the corporate twitter account, emails, and server without getting access to personal twitter details since those wouldn't be managed by the corporate password manager.

This is one of those "observations" that can only come from someone who has never spent 30 seconds thinking of online collaborative projects. It's asinine.

I'm looking at observation #2 in the bottom there and the person doesn't acknowledge that the files were also uploaded to pastebin either because they didn't know or because they are trying to mislead.

I'm not even going to bother looking at the rest since the top and bottom ends of filled with half-assed conspiracy mongering.

Quite frankly, I'm very, very, very skeptical of any claims by either side, but from what I've heard, if Phil Fish did false flag hack himself, he could be in deep shit for allowing confidential documents to get out.

However, considering the way he behaves on Twitter, I don't feel any sympathy for him if that turns out to be the case.

Maybe you are genuinely unaware then that "fairy" is a gay slur, so I would advise against misusing it on people with whom you have a disagreement of gender politics. Actually, I'd advise against using it at all.

And that comment tells me all I probably need to know. Guess we know where we both stand. lol

Why would congress be involved in reddit self-moderation?

Glad to see that you are being reasonable in your conclusion under the pretense that he leaked his own bank details, social security number, and full corporate financial dealings.

Yes, there is a reason:

A disgruntled EX posted stuff about a past relationship that hasn't even been proven and some people twisted his words totally out of context. IE. there was no sex with journalists mentioned by him. That's something the "Game of Telelphone" created. Hey remember, that incident with Josh Mattingly and a female game dev getting harassed? Well, of course, Josh's incdient blow over really fast while Quinn's gets blown out of proportions to the stage of complete idiocy including people and families life, and all the crap happening to Phil.

I understand people are using internet drama to push their own agendas but seriously, there is a limit to everything.

Then you really don't know. That is not the evidence that I'm talking about. but l'm not about to get banned by mentioning anything here. You'll find out about it. its all bloody seeping up anyway all over the internet.

So you'd rather we vilify people with vaginas?

I'd like to think that it isn't either-or. In fact, I'd say that boiling it down to those exact two choices is intellectually dishonest. And it's not like there's one extra, 3rd option that's right in the middle which is magically superior to either. There's a whole spectrum of decisions between giving unconditional support to people who just say they're doing the right thing, sight unseen, and backing a bunch of assholes who hammer away at any little mistake with shitty behavior in order to settle grudges from previous controversies, or to sate whatever psychological issues they have with women, or indies, or gaming journalism, or whatever.
Paying attention is one of them, for example. Making informed comments instead of knee-jerk reactions is another - although that requires waiting until proof has been verified or dismissed, and since apparently silence is as good as approval to some people, I can see why people rush into a thread and say "I'm so glad I don't hang out at sites where this shit could splash onto me; could someone hook me up with a summary real quick?" It's not a binary choice, although I hope I'm not obligated to list every single flowchart now that I've said that.

I was actually really impressed with what little interaction this forum had with the gossip at first. A few threads were shut down before they could build up steam, but at the same time there were no embarrassing attempts at chivalry, no public reassurances that the forum would handle the situation. Just cut it down at the roots. I'd consider that an understandable and solid response. The current meta-discussion, in comparison to the nonsense that's been flying fast and heavy on other forums, is still way above par - but I wouldn't call it good. It's not good just because it's better than the fetid shit that's being stirred into the gossip on other sites. It's not terrible, either. It's just kind of problematic.

Which pretty much seals the deal for me as far as "is this fake?" Phil may be dumb and reactionary at points, but he is not going to expose himself to enormous legal liability just to convincingly fake a hacking story in order to garner support of a girl he likes. I mean, really.

Drink some coffee, take a shower (you know...fully wake up) and then come back and consider what he would gain by faking his own privacy breech.

I find it interesting how people can come up with all these elaborate explanations on how it's fake but they cannot answer the simple question of "Why?".

The guy is a huge Andy Kaufman fan, as well as a proven jerk. He doesn't need to gain anything by pranking the industry.

And it seems mad suspect that he lost access to everything except his Twitter account.

Criminal. Not sure what the police can do about this, probably not much. I don't even know who would be in charge of investigating and eventually (hopefully) prosecuting the human garbage that did this.

The good part about this is that doing something criminal like this is probably one of the most efficient ways to push people away from your “cause“.

34 pages in one day?

All I can see is a absurd amount of irony regarding what is happening. Both sides seem to be pretty close when it comes to insanity.

The only way this could get more weird is if someone start posting naked pictures of Phil Fish.

Welp. 4chan being awful.

I like Phil Fish too. Hope he changes all his details quickly.

What sorta people get angry over game devs NOT being sexist, racist people wat

What is there to like about the guy? He's a jerk, plain and simple. Doesn't excuse someone being an asshole and pulling this stunt though.

This is pretty crazy. While I don't like Phil Fish at all, having your info all over the internet is a little extreme.

No it doesn't. It only seems mad suspect that people aren't thinking about any of this from a critical perspective. To quote myself from this very page:

No, because of your usage of fairy, your derailing of the topic with your blatant misogyny, your claims that you'll be censored by the mods here if you reveal your super-special evidence, and I'm sure a bunch of other reasons.

tbf thats not necesarily true, when you look at some other hacks (like Snowden, etc.). Not comparing these, because obviously they are completely different, but the logic that "you did something criminal therefore you're pushing people from your cause" isn't true at all.

I thought that posting an eagle bearing the first amendment was an obvious joke, I'll work harder next time.

I'm on my phone running a yard sale filled with grabby old people right now, so I can't reply in detail. However I appreciate this post, and agree. Your original post was misunderstood, so thanks for clarifying.

Calling people fairies for discussing representations of genders, then doubling down when you got called out on it.
