And this is...?

*NOTE MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS GAME ARE FOR AN UNFINISHED PRODUCT. ANYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE, AND HOPEFULLY TWEAKS WILL BE MADE IN TIME FOR THE GAME’S LAUNCH IN SEPTEMBER. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THERE WAS SOME MESSED UP STUFF GOING ON IN THAT ROOM AND THAT IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FINAL GAME *

Part 1
Part 2

Before I start with these impressions, I will have you know that I WAS ROBBED at that SDCC 3DS tournament. I know I would have gone on to win the tournament. My Kirby is legit. Greninja is a FRAUD. This truly is the San Diego Screwjob. Nintendo screwed me, damn it. But it’s okay, Nintendo. Just give me a job at Treehouse and all is forgiven. I’ll make sure this never happens again to anyone else. I think that’s a fair trade-off.

I KNOW YOU’RE READING THIS TRINEN. YOU TOO BIHLDORFF

Anyways, after I was eliminated in the tournament, it was pretty late in the day due to all of the delays, and I had to head over to the Hall H line that was quickly filling for Saturday’s Comic Con panels. Unfortunately, I couldn’t watch the rest of the tournament live. Instead, I ended up waiting 18 hours in line for Hall H and barely got in… but the Marvel panel was amazing and worth the wait. That world premiere of the Avengers 2 trailer was something else.

Since Comic Con, I’ve gone back to watch the stream, specifically the 1 v 1, no items matches. The thing that stuck out the most to me was the use of Bowser at this tournament. DEHF, a top Brawl player, used Bowser. Westballz and Lucky, two of the best Melee players in the world, used Bowser. 2 out of the top 4 players in the tournament used Bowser, both of which met in the finals for a Bowser mirror match.

Is Bowser, a notoriously weak character in the previous Smash games, actually top tier in Smash 4? How was this character so dominant at the tournament?

I believe Bowser is an extremely strong character... for day -50. It is impossible to say that he is a legitimately strong character at this point, because THE GAME ISN’T OUT YET. Players aren’t even accustomed to the controls yet. Wait until launch when players are short hop double lasering with Falco before declaring Bowser is unstoppable. I believe that, with the selection of characters in the E3 demo, he’s one of the stronger characters, but once the actual game comes out, he’ll be good (unless they nerf his speed and killing power) but not top tier. The most common response to “OMG TOP TIER” is “the game isn’t even out yet, Sakurai is still making balancing changes!” While that is true, I don’t even think Bowser really needs to be significantly nerfed. I honestly believe his dominance is a result of unfamiliarity with the game and its controls. If Bowser stays the same, I can’t see him dominating the meta game.

Why is Bowser so good? Well, he’s been buffed across the board from his Brawl incarnation. I don’t even understand some of the changes, personally. I liked his playstyle and moveset in Melee and Brawl, however awful it was. It felt true to the character. His forward smash was ridiculously satisfying. In Smash 4, Bowser is suddenly some agile mother fucker, doing drop kicks and shit. It’s kinda strange. I’m surprised they didn’t go all the way with the moveset changes and just give him Fox’s sex kick as his neutral air. He has the DK back air from Smash 64. He’s SO FAST. His walking speed and running speed are amazing for his size, and his dash attack is quick and sends opponents flying. His up air is probably as fast as Marth’s up air, at least that’s the feel I got from it. His f tilt is the same as Brawl just faster. His fire breath is fast, has insane range and has next to no cool down. His jabs are SO GOOD. The list goes on and on. It’s like this for his entire moveset.

Did I mention that Bowser is a good character in this game?

Watching the Sheik vs. Bowser matches on stream, it’s clear that even vs. the more mobile and projectile heavy Sheik, Bowser can control the game. He is so heavy and powerful that he only really requires three or four solid hits to be within kill percentage. He’s like Melee Ganon on steroids. The Sheik player doesn’t grab or use A moves much, but effectively zones the Bowser out with needles and grenades. Considering the lack of combos in this game, it’s a decent strategy. You don’t want to run in and f tilt because Bowser has much greater range on his tilts and smash moves. He’s quick enough to punish an ftilt, a short hop fair or a dash attack from Sheik. It was kind of unreal watching Bowser dispose of Sheik so easily. He not only matches Sheik’s speed, but also has a ridiculous amount of power behind those moves. DEHF’s dismantling of the Sheik is proof that, on paper, Bowser wins the matchup. Hard. Sheik has lots of quick moves, low aerial lag, and good keep away tools, but it doesn’t mean much when she can’t kill. Bowser is probably the heaviest character in the game, so Sheik was probably killing with up smashes at 150%, if not higher.

The Grand Finals of DEHF’s Bowser vs. Damien’s Bowser was fantastic. One player is arguably the best Brawl player on the planet, and the other is clearly a tournament player who knows what he’s doing. We saw brilliant mindgames, spacing, and punishing on display with, at the moment, the best character in the game. It was great! It reminded me of a fast paced Brawl set. Both players were fairly aggressive, and I personally believe that was because landing moves with Bowser feels so damn satisfying. That drop kick is ridiculous! It's a move like Captain Falcon's knee: you just want to go for it.

NITPICK: I REALLY wish we could see the percentages on the top screen, as watching sets without being able to see percentages really throws me off, so I’m kind of going by memory here. While I've never played a Bowser ditto, most of Bowser's kill moves on other characters (f smash, down b) killed in the 70s. I’m guessing in a Bowser mirror that’s 90s or low 100s, with the rest of his moves (fair, bair, f tilt) killing in the 110-120 range. I know when we are actually playing the game it won’t be a problem, but for stuff like streams or video… not being able to see the percents without projecting the bottom screen on the video in some way is pretty lame. Even the option to place them on the top screen would be appreciated.

Not really much more to say here about the grand finals. It’s a great, fundamental set of Smash 4. If you haven’t watched it, go check it out. This is how competitive play is going to look like day one. That’s the pace right there.

Oh yeah, that down B shield break was HYPE

One sad thing I noticed while watching these 1 v 1 matches is that the edge game is almost non-existent. The new ledge mechanics, while it will get rid of things like ledge camping and planking, pretty much destroys the edge game and nerfs gimping HARD. This will lead to opponents living longer, and if you combine that with the huge stages, we are going to see some really high percentage kills and some long matches. I mean, how many time outs have we seen since E3? However, I do think there were instances where players were too scared to go off the ledge and try to intercept a recovery with an aerial. Again, unfamiliarity with the new control scheme will lead to less risky play. While I saw some Bowsers go out there and chase with forward airs, most of the time the player on stage would just wait at the ledge while the off stage opponent slowly made his or her way back onto the ledge. Boring. Even the standard edge hog -> intercept your recovering opponent with a back air or down air will be missed. It just added so much depth, precision, and drama to the game and now it’s completely gone. While the game has greater hitstun than Brawl and the gameplay is faster in general, it is definitely hurt by these new edge mechanics combined with the massive stage boundaries and high percent kill moves.

Then again, it’s day -21 so I probably don’t know what the hell I’m talking about.

In conclusion, my excitement for the game is decently high. After the Dojo hype, I will never get too excited for a game ever again, let alone a Smash Bros game. It’s not worth the possible heartbreak. Compare this to the lead up to Brawl’s launch, where, on a scale from 1 to 100, my hype was at 1000 from Snake’s reveal to the game’s launch. There’s been a lot of exciting announcements leading up to Smash 4’s launch. Being able to use the Gamecube controller was a pipe dream of mine. You can probably find my posts in the very first Smash 4 thread, arguing with people who claimed “the audience who cares about the GC controller is way too small, Nintendo would never waste money trying to sell an adapter!” Speaking of pipe dreams, Nintendo held two pre-launch tournaments for the game, one of which I attended! How could I not be excited for this game? I still deprive myself of sleep every night to see a single new screenshot of the game!

After playing the game myself and watching a good deal of footage, I can confirm that the game is, in fact, fun. Most of my play came from free for alls with items on, and I can't say I had any problems with it. I don’t know why, but going into Smash 4, I was expecting it to feel worse than Brawl. Maybe I was just being pessimistic. Luckily, I was wrong. It felt better than Brawl upon first impression, and having played it a lot more since then, I still feel that way. I’m very excited to get my hands on the final game and just RIP IT APART. Metaphorically, of course.

My thoughts on this game have been pretty constant since around 2010. I was able to reflect back on Brawl, my disappointment, and what I could reasonably expect from a new Smash Bros game. If Smash 4 was literally Brawl, just without tripping and with a more balanced character roster, I’d be fine with that. Anything more is a cherry on top. My dream game, Melee 2.0, is never going to happen and I’ve accepted that. I enjoyed Brawl for what it was, played it for thousands of hours, and placed well in tournaments, despite the game being far more slow and boring than Melee. It was the overuse of Meta Knight that caused me to quit the game, not the fact that I hated the game and its mechanics. Meta Knight the character is back, but I’m hoping the broken monster from Brawl is gone forever.

And with that, my series of write ups on Smash Bros for Wii U and Smash Bros for 3DS has come to an end. But don’t be sad, kids. This is a good thing! The game is less than 3 weeks away! And while I intend to play the living hell out of the game for hours upon hours, sleep and food optional, you better believe I’m going to be dropping a couple thousand word rants. Will they be positive rants or negative rants? Probably both. But there will be rants, that I can assure you of.

3 weeks. Get hype.

So repetitive though. Gimme something new. Maybe Lower Norfair (Super Metroid) and Rundas (Prime 3).

Ridley would get his ass kicked. He's just flesh and blood and maybe a bit of steel or phazon, he's not gonna do much against a ridiculous magical demon like Ganon.

Which would still be great to watch.
Is Ganon a demon or just a gerudian that is magically enhanced by the tri force of power?

Ridley with prep time would be able to figure something out. He could totally reverse-engineer the Master Sword/Light Arrows and work out how to beat Ganon.

Spoilers: Ridley is Batman.

Is Ganon a demon or just a gerudian that is magically enhanced by the tri force of power?

He's a Gerudo with the Triforce (of Power in OoT, with the whole thing at other points). "Demon" is kind of a vague term, just means has magic and uses for evil.

Ah okay thanks! Ghirahim is a literal demon though right?

Girahim is just a
sword, although he is the sword of a demon king. And that demon king's hatred was supposedly re-incarnated as Gannondorf... so Ganon's kind of a demon, kind of not
. I don't know, it's weird.

So assuming that the leak is right and we get Corneria and Brinstar as the only Star Fox and Metroid 3DS stages, which two tracks would you pick for each stage? I know little about Star Fox soundtracks, but Metroid has a ton. You'd have to also go with stage-appropriate themes, so I don't think Lower Brinstar (Super Metroid) or Phendrana Drifts (Prime) are good choices for an acid-filled hell. :P

Assuming we get new arrangements for each stage, with the Melee music available on the Wii U version, I'd choose Zoness and a new arrangement of the SNES Corneria theme (preferably one which takes a more orchestral approach than Brawl's) for Corneria; and Overgrown with Vegetation / Green Brinstar and Lower Norfair for Brinstar. Though hopefully I'll never have to live in such a grim reality.

Just completed my Club Nintendo JP pre-purchase survey!

Why does it let me complete it multiple times? I thought I did it wrong because it let me do it again, now there are 2 entries.

I always thought that Ganon was a sort of like a corrupting influence that Ganondorf was susceptible to because he was always coveting wind. It eventually took over his personality, and was always part of the curse.

My guess is that it's just overwriting the previous entry. I wouldn't worry too much

We should be able to in the final game:

My goal is to teach myself katakana before the end of the year, and then next year to start learning japanese. Won't have to bug you so much, hopefully.

My dream job is to work for Treehouse, so anything to put on my resume to help, I'm going to do. Trying to get a bit more work experience (3 years as a software engineer so far), and pad my resume. One day, nintendo, you will welcome me with open arms!

Interesting interpretation. I never got the impression that Ganon/Gannondorf were different beings, just that Ganon was the physical realization of what was really inside Ganondorf all along, the hatred and lust for power. Like the tri-force of power allowed him to become the ultimate version of himself.

It just got all philosophical up in here!

I've always been confused about him and other zelda things lol

Since you can buy both physical and digital version? Beware that if you did the survey but didn't register your game in time after you bought it, twice, then you'll be banned from future surveys for 12 weeks.

It is interesting how they refer to MGS4 as that couldnt possibly be the only game the composer has worked on

It's interesting, also, that yasunori mitsuda's work on kid icarus uprising is ignored.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

:O Really!? Do people in japan abuse club nintendo that much?

I'm buying it on eshop (once!), and i'll do the survey then. Was clicking the button twice a mistake?

Yeah, I guess I see it as a bit of both. You do have characters like other Ganon from FSA and
Yuga
(ALBW spoilers) who make me think that it's not always just Ganon though. Basically imagine that there's some evil curse stuff floating through the aether that pushes people towards more evil tendencies.

I like the changes to the edge game. It encourages aerial edge attacks instead of edge-hogging. I know edge-hogging requires timing and knowledge on when to effectively use it, but I always thought it was a lame way to get a KO. There is a much interesting risk/reward system with the new edge mechanic which is much more dynamic than pulling off a successful edge hog.

?
Excellent.

You don't think the Sheik's were just terrible at that matchup? I definitely got that impression more than I thought the matchup looked awful. Still, I'll be glad if Bowser is busted. Hope he's great. Now if only they could figure out a way to make Link good.

I agree with the percent/screen thing, and the negative impact of the edge mechanics. I love that there's no planking, but I hate that edgeguarding is so hurt by it. Did you get any better idea of how invincibility works? I'm hoping that eventually it becomes easy enough to bop folks that grab the edge when coming back. It would actually be cool if we start seeing more off stage edge guarding from it too. And there's the possibility of grabbing the edge after they get it to put them in a poor position maybe.

Glad you're looking forward to it!

That's how I always saw it, too.

Especially in the "Downfall" branch. By the time Ganon became the Blue Boar, he pretty much became a true "Demon King" and lost whatever traces of his former "humanity" that he may have had.

The ruler of the Classic Zelda's "Underworld" was no longer concerned with whatever original ambitions Ganondorf may have had.

That's awesome! One of my senpai (no real other word for it) ended up working there for a few years. I, too, once desired to join the Treehouse staff, but I'm pretty happy where I am now. :D Wishing you the best of luck, and let me know if I can be of help!

I didn't know about that penalty. How frightening!

The whole game around edge hogging is a lot more complex than that. If you're grabbing the edge, it limits the opponent's options by forcing them to do a laggy recovery to the stage, but it also limits your own options for edgeguarding and puts you into a potentially dangerous position where if you get hit while holding the edge you'll probably die instead of the opponent. Then there's also a whole yomi game where if you think the opponent is going to jump from the edge early to get into a better position to punish you, you can aim for the ledge anyway and still grab it.

Eh, nice to see all those composers work in the game. As much as I'd like to say that the MGS 4 confirms snake, the other composers would confirm Dante from DMC as well
Which I would love

Also, nice finale Anth0ny

I've seen this a lot, and I've never really understood why. Why do so many (or at least why to you) is the edgehogging version so much less interesting?

I guess I always thought it was cool just because it wasn't immediately obvious. There was a bonus for it in Melee, so I felt cool any time I could get it. Honestly I'd much rather see someone die from an edge hog than get Fsmashed off the stage repeatedly.
