Cloudflare doesn't host anything. It's a CDN. You don't hack into websites by breaking into someone's Cloudflare account; you go directly for the actual web server.I feel like adding my opinion since there is a lot of weird notions happening that fish did it himself:
You can easily lose control of your cloudflare acct. Double login with a phone is optional.
The contents of the stolen data could easily have come from one place. I highly doubt a thief took the time to place data into folders.
One thing I don't get is why would store such sensitive data on a trashy host like cloudflare.

How can that second guy have a Papers, Please avatar?
I don't know that I'm comfortable with psychoanalysing a consumer base. I would agree that a lot of it does have to do with the technological competence that DrROBschiz mentions below.
I know there have been raids in the comment section of websites, youtube, and so on. But has Anonymous ever doxxed someone in the arts? Haven't their targets been mostly government, politics related?
People say some pretty vile, awful things to musicans and actors on a pretty regular basis.
Honestly, this goes for aspiring gamedevs as well.
I normally don't talk about it on GAF, especially since I'm too busy with other stuff going on right now to really show anything of note, but I absolutely love games and I've put a fair bit of effort in during my free time learning how to make them. I've even had the first hints of the feeling of seeing someone enjoy what you make.
The more shit I see, the more I wonder if it's even worth it. The industry is terrible, and the internet is a hatred spreading mess. I feel like I'm better off continuing with what I'm currently doing, which will end up with me doing more scientific programming, than I would be if I actually tried to follow my own interests and make games. Less shit to deal with.
It stinks, but I wonder if a bigger buffer between devs, journalists, and the community is needed. PR can be annoying, but maybe there should be more distance between the three entities.

Oh, I'm no Kuchera apologist! The piracy stuff with Kain was a farce, especially since he recently talked about "bending the law" with the Star Wars "unedited" versions. He deserves those critiques, absolutely. Still, gets a lot of just pure hatred. You can see how defensive he has to be in his responses: he gets stuck blocking and ignoring the legit criticisms because they got lost in the violent noise thrust his way.
Probably a better example would be Patrick Klepek. Writes intelligently, willing to accept criticism, does his best to practice what he preaches, and then gets assaulted with jokes about his dead father. I suppose even that's better than what's happening to Polytron folks, but, Christ, is that how low I'm setting the bar here?
Beyonce, some actresses got some private pictures published publicly (sorry can't remember their names at the moment) , Ashton Kutcher, Mel Gibson. These I remember.
It's actually getting pretty out of hand how much of a backlash there is these days whenever one makes a suggestion that there might be inequality or injustice within western societies. Social Justice Warrior has become some kind of rallying cry for privileged people who take umbrage at the suggestion that they might have had things easier than someone else, and I'm not even sure all the people who do it are actually bigots either. It's like the US has become so divided and frustrated, that it's started a war on itself.
Yeah just getting in late as well, anyone have a summary?Just going into this completely blind. Is there a roundup somewhere of what happened / sequence of events? Something to do with polytron (I thought that was a misnomer for Polygon at first lol) and Phil Fish (FEZ guy, right?).
The best thing is that none of it actually makes any fucking sense.I love how the quote on the imgur link says, "Proof that Phil Fish faked a 4chan hack of his website" when there is not any "proof" at all.
At best it's all speculation. At best. Yet so many people want to jump on it.
A lot more then them have been doxed. Sports players, Politicians, Police Chiefs, and Celebrities have all been doxed.
List of people who have been doxed(based on that website).
Michelle Obama, Kim Kardashian, Joe Biden, Robert Mueller (FBI Director), Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder (U.S. Attorney General), Charlie Beck (LAPD Chief), Mel Gibson, Ashton Kutcher, Jay Z, Beyonce, Paris Hilton,Britney Spears, Sarah Palin, Hulk Hogan, Donald Trump, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Gore, Kanye West, Kris Jenner, Stacia Hylton (U.S. Marshals Director), Mitt Romney, Tiger Woods ,Sandusky, Chris Christie, Bill Gates.
Doxing is a real problem.
I firmly believe that the biggest problem, and one of the hardest changes to make, is the mentality that people on the internet are "less real". Human decency disappears when you become convinced that you aren't interacting with a person, or you just stop caring about that fact. You see it from every side and it's behavior that has been perpetuated and more or less accepted.
People keep saying this, but I'm part of other communities where this doesn't happen. John Scalzi is an outspoken progressive, much hated by the same sorts of morons that are doing this stuff, but he's never been hacked or doxxed. Yelled at? Sure. Called names? Sure. Had his banking information, private mails, and life details vomited onto the internet? Nope.
Keep saying it to convince yourselves if you need to, but those of us who are part of other communities know better. And so long as people keep ignoring the problem within this community, you give it cover in which to grow.
But I thought that only happens to video game people because the video game community is scum?
Part of the problem is that exploitative click bait sites have taken up a lot of those social justice issues and amplified them beyond any sensible debate, because of a daily need to manufacture traffic. So the response to injustice has been diluted by a lot of "What this WHITE MALE said to this BRAVE WOMAN will SHOCK and OFFEND you!" (He said he liked her shoes) and #YESALLMENARERAPISTSUNLESSYOUAGREEWITHUSANDCLICKSHAREINWHICHCASEYOU'REOKAYMAYBE. The rape culture debate in particular is one which has been warped out of all sense and proportion from its sociological/anthropological microstudy origins into a logical fallacy shoutfest.
These are not even close to being as bad as the things they decrying; please don't get me wrong on that point. But it has contributed to the notion of people who spend their online lives arguing about these things as being irrational and overbearing.
I actually agree with you. I hate when guys like Kuchera and Sessler get inundated with vulgar insults because A) it's gross, and B) it means they don't have to respond to any of the valid criticism.
Why aren't there "good" hackers going after the "evil" ones
Are they THAT good at covering their tracks?
Are their no internal conflicts here? I just can't see how this evil goes unchecked within the communities that support these people
I mean I know that its popular to hate on Phil Fish but jeebus man. These guys barely bat an eye at possibly ruining the lives of people regardless of who and what they are.
This isn't justice in any form man

Phil Fish is employed of Polytron. Someone hacked the server and leaked tons of private financial info on the net. The people at Polytron are right now concerned about identity theft and serious losses.Just going into this completely blind. Is there a roundup somewhere of what happened / sequence of events? Huh? I dont think anyone actually believed that doxing and being hacked was a game community, only, issue.

rarely are you to see these kinds of acts organized on the front page of a public accessible image board. they are normally organized in private communication channels.Yeah, my own anecdotal evidence here but there is no doubt in my mind that whoever did this it is not a big 4chan conspiracy. I got banned for 2 weeks for apparently inciting a raid and dox when all I said is that if those guys cheated on their wives with Zoe then the wives deserve to know. If that got killed then there's no way a big hack plan could be organized and carried out on there.
Honestly, this goes for aspiring gamedevs as well.

maybe the first step towards people taking doxxing more seriously as a crime is to stop fucking calling it doxxing
For context, I'd probably also add that Phil Fish was pretty fiercely defending Depression Quest developer Zoe Quinn because her ex-boyfriend posted some logs from Facebook about her cheating on him and apparently he slept with a Kotaku writer who posted an article about her once and something about french fries and hamburgers and WHAT THE FUCK AM I TYPING THIS IS LIKE HIGH SCHOOL ITS ALL HOT GARBAGE.
It's easier then saying the definition every single time, since it isn't simply identity theft.
Oh man. This is awful. Why would anyone do this?
Also, Notch was part of this Zoe Quinn thing too so I hope he doesn't get affected.
I get that though, the whole Upworthy fetish of feels thing is pretty annoying. What I don't understand is why people who seem to be actively angered by discussion of social justice would waste time on those kinds of sites to the point that they just seem angry all the time.
It's pretty much high school-tier bullshit when you "care" about a sexually active woman's activities or really anyone's sexual activity for that matter.
People like to overthink things and then they believe their outlandish explanation purely because it sounds more exciting than the real thing. It's basically how conspiracy theories come to be.
Oh man. This is awful. Why would anyone do this?

Yeah, pretty much. Humans are naturally good at imposing patterns on things, and conspiracies and evil masterminds make a powerful, straightforward narrative that's often a lot more interesting than the complex, disorganized nature of the actual events.
It's pretty much high school-tier bullshit when you "care" about a sexually active woman's activities or really anyone's sexual activity for that matter.
What does Zoe Quinn have to do with this happening to Phil Fish? Why would Notch be a possible target?

Oh I can handle that fine, but basic logic dictates that people who openly engage in bigotry will be more likely to congregate in places where they are tolerated and validated by those around them. It's not just a 4chan thing, sure. However, the strict moderation on GAF means that it's not a major thing here. People outside here with abhorrent views actively attack moderators here like besada and mumei on other boards for not tolerating their bullshit.
Since you've basically attacked me personally in every post you made, starting with "grow the fuck up", this is pretty rich.
