People thought it would mean a lot in Brawl, but it didn't have much significance other than we were going to get some sweet music.

I can't help but wonder about some, like the Xenoblade composer.

Hmmm.

ACE all but confirms Shulk is in. They've done basically nothing else that could warrant their inclusion (unlike Mitsuda and Shimomura, the other Xenoblade composers on the roster), and they're not like the Bandai Namco guys where their presence is mostly related to the fact that the game is being developed there.

I was thinking of the DLC characters a lot last night.

I can get why they would theoretically hold back the Ice Climbers & the Chorus Men, to get the multi-person mechanic working properly across both versions. As for Snake, maybe Konami & Nintendo agreed to have Snake back too late in the game & Sakurai wanted to prevent what happened with Brawl (adding Sonic at the last-minute at the cost of Mewtwo) by relegating him to DLC. That leaves the question, what about Lucas & Wolf? As semi-clones, you'd think they'd be easy to squeeze in unless there were really bad time constraints.
My theory on the reasons for all five "leaked" DLC characters:

- Ice Climbers and Chorus Men: More time to optimize/balance the multi-man mechanics. In the case of Ice Climbers, there might be limitations on the 3DS that require a bit more time.

- Lucas and Wolf: More time to better distinguish them from Ness and Fox/Falco, respectively. Personally, I think Wolf was already well-distinguished from Fox/Falco, and I know many feel the same way about Lucas in relation to Ness. But Sakurai might be making them even more unique.

- Snake: Maybe Konami stands to gain more if it's paid DLC. If it's a free update for either system, Konami still gains goodwill in the lead-up to MGS5, similar to what Snake did for them in Brawl during the lead-up to MGS4.

I like to picture the following trailer:

The two-in-one Ice Climbers run into the three-in-one Chorus Men. Meanwhile, on Shadow Moses, Snake pops out from under a box -- "Kept you waiting, huh?" -- and then Lucas the psychic and Wolf the mercenary appear as stand-ins for Psycho Mantis and Sniper Wolf. :p

What else have they done for the record?

Heh, yeah. "Just to mess with people" makes sense for some of it. Just, those really high quality leaks/fakes would take so much time and effort. It's hard to imagine the person who has the skill to pull that off and also wants to just for shits and giggles.
Don't you feel kind of good when your post gets upvoted or (positively) quoted a lot? The same thing applies here.

It would take a lot of time to make a leak like that, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't enjoyable for the leaker(s) to make. It probably took a long time to write the SmashGAF fan-fiction, but I bet the writer had a lot of fun doing it.

So, serious question here.

How many of y'all are pro/tournament level players? I've always only been fair-to-middling at Smash, and that's been fine with me. My friends/family that live around here and play are also not great. I love a little more than half the time but I have fun. I feel like 99% of this edge-guarding/wave-dashing/tripping/fall-speed stuff is going to have absolutely no effect on my enjoyment of the game.

So, when I see people really hung up on these little details, I have to assume they just play at a higher level than I do, because I couldn't care less about edge guarding, y'know?

So, how many of you are for fun, how many are for glory?

I'm not pro but I do like to play at a high tournament level. I'm definitely more of a Glory person but I love to play for Fun as well. I'm about 70/30 but depending on the environment I can go 100% either way. Those of you who befriend me with your 3DS you will have the perfect brother for smashing.

I will say though, I have been shunned by people because I refused to play them with "top tier" characters. As in their reasoning for not even playing me once was that they would never fight a Donkey Kong or Bowser in a live tournament so I wasn't worth their time. If any apple holes like that are lurking about now, show yourself so I can build my ignore list accordingly.

I'm garbage at the game, but I play 'for glory' style if given the choice. It depends on who's around though. If the nieces are around, we'll play with items on, in teams against CPUs. If some less competitive friends are around we might 2v1 our friend that's better at the game, no team attack. If I'm bored by myself, it might be Pokeballs on high against lvl 9s or stadium mode or something. But most of the time the Smash I play is at tournaments or Smashfests. I usually place 9th - 17th at locals with 30-60 people. Not the worst, but awful for how long I've been playing.

Ok, I see where you're coming from. The invincibility from grabbing the edge is kind of obnoxious and I'm glad that's gone. Long, high percent stocks can be exciting at times too, so I see what you mean there.

I think a lot of my problem with it is the overall combination of Brawl's ledge snap mechanic and the new removal of edgehogging. That, plus the hitboxes present with most up-B moves, means that it's rarely advantageous for the recovering player to go for any other option, at least I'd expect.

But like you mentioned, hopefully it does encourage more of the high risk, high reward offstage edgeguards. That would be cool, certainly.

I think the spammable air dodge means you're rarely going to see people going deep for a KO.

Honestly, I think it's sad that they're massively reducing the offstage game and that people are happy about it, it's another one of those things that just sets it apart from other fighting games and reducing it in favour of a more ground based game is just so boring to me.

Not really sure if anyone noticed this or not. But it's that this is a Skyward Sword song in the 3DS version. So does that mean we might get another Zelda stage in the 3DS or will this one be featured in the Spirit Tracks stage?

Each stage has two tracks, I guess the second track will sometimes be used for bgms from different games. Both Donkey Kong and Zelda had twice as many tracks as known stages there, so I'd assume they're for the stages we already know.

I'm think I'm with you.

Just gotta believe.

Sow while it's not 100% confirmation of Xenoblade music... it's highly likely it's Xenoblade music

Also keep in mind the 3DS version only has two tracks per stage, so I doubt we'll get off-franchise tracks with maybe on or two exceptions (Like Balloon fight stage having retro music from somewhere else) so unless it's smash run exclusive, I'd say it makes it super likely we get a stage

Lucas and Wolf? I think I see Nintendo's angle with these two.

Of course he knows he's deaf, but there's a difference between mentioning it, and making Heath the butt of a really dumb joke. That post was completely uncalled for. I mean, come the fuck on dude, "a minute of silence, oh wait"?

Multi-air-dodge is an awful mechanic, yeah.

What do you mean by reducing the off stage game though? Is that in reference to the edge mechanics, or something else?

I'd consider myself a tournament level player. I've been to 100+ Smash tournaments, including nationals like Apex. I used to place high/win Brawl tournaments back in the day, too.

Oh wow, didn't even catch that. I kinda wish the 3DS version stuck to music exclusively from the handheld games. Lord knows there's enough awesome portable Zelda music to choose from.

That's dumb on their part. And I love when people don't play based on "tiers". And anyone who uses dk and bowser is awesome in my book. I've recently being trying them in brawl to get ready for smash 4 and love them.

I'll send you a friend request tonight if you don't mind

Am I justified in being concerned that you won't be able to have AI Controlled Mii fights?

If the leak is real, it looks like picking a Mii is cumbersome and weird and doesn't seem set up for computer players.

Yeah, I just kinda figured it was either for spirit tracks or the gerudo valley stage.

multi man smash is mii AI opponents, so i'm not sure why not?

Do we already know the songs for both the Spirit Tracks and Gerudo Valley stages from the demo? Or could no one actually hear?

I could see the SS song fitting on either.

The Mii Fighters aren't on the leaked select screen at all, yeah? I assume there's been talk already about why that might be, but I missed it.

With all the restrictions they have on Miis, I bet it is cumbersome to pick them, but I'm curious where you're seeing it suggested that computers can't be Miis.

The demo only had 1 song per stage, If i recall.

Because customization is off. I read somewhere (not sure if it was a fact or speculation) that disabling config replaces mii fighters with the 'random' slot. It's a good solution to removing a character from the CSS without messing up the formatting.

They definitely are outliers lol. That kind of comment sounds like one of those kinds of players that the For Glory mode is catering to -- you know, the type that thinks FD is the only serious stage in the game and nothing else. I wouldn't know how you'd categorize those kind of people, though lol.

If there's an entirely different menu for picking Miis, there may not be a way to set them for AI players.

Just concerned since Mario Kart, Tennis and Golf do not allow for AI Miis for seemingly no reason.

I can see a second Zelda stage happening.

Surely if Nintendo's got to have money they'd save other characters for DLC.

I mean they change £5 for Lucas and thus at the end of the day they've made a grand total of £5. Doesn't really seem worth it. Toon Link on the other hand would surely get the money rolling in.

Yeah, I'm really hoping for free DLC but if it's Lucas, they'll have my 5 bucks anyway. The prevailing theory that they're DLC on the 3DS and included on the Wii U seems pretty believable to me - good compromise that allows the game to be released earlier and the characters not to be completely cut from the game.

*EDIT* I also really hope it means more DLC further down the road for Nintendo games. I'd love more stages/characters in Smash, more tracks on MK8, and more Pikmin levels. I hope their foray into DLC is going well for them...

I think that's nothing more than a rumor, probably an offshoot of the (also unsubstantiated) speculation that you can't use Mii Fighter when customization is off. Moreover, it doesn't make sense to me: would it mean that you can't select random when customization is on?

Yep, this time it's permabanned according to him.

I'm expecting alt account tho.

Most of those mechanics really have very few effects for anyone who doesn't play the game competitively. It is actually something that bothers me a lot, when a few pro players act like advanced mechanics greatly impact casual play.

Edit: Misinterpreted the question lol. But my point still stands.

Now, to the correct answer. I play mostly casually, as there aren't really any groups of competitive players (that I know of) close to me. I'd love to start playing competitively, but It's quite hard when you don't have other people to play with.

Request away! And as an added bonus for befriending me, I actually talk when Voice Chat is available and I'm incapable of cursing so the experience is always pleasant.

I've got to figure out my Pokemon situation though. My friend Safari has things people liked but it's been so long now I hope people captured to their hearts content but Smash will be more important for me in the long run.

The random button was a new addition for Brawl.

You just place your cursor off the CSS to select random in 64/melee

At the very least we get alternate stage music from Xenoblade. At most we'll get an actual stage, Shulk, the Heropon and Sharla's gun(s) as an item.

You mean third?

This will likely be the alt song for Gerudo Valley.

Spirit tracks alt is hopefully Link's Awakening!

There are already two

Woops! I forgot about Gerudo for a second there.

I can't turn off the Multi-Man battle music.

Guys, don't forget:

The Ballad of the Goddess may not even be tied to a stage in the 3DS version and simply be a bonus track.

Yup. I remember this. Highly possible.

The original Spirit Tracks overworld theme is much better, wonder if they are going for a much more cohesive soundtrack this time.

Pokemon X and Y Battle Theme rearrangement sounds better than the original, and I'm digging the Multi-Man theme a lot.

Can't wait to hear the Wii U versions soundtrack.

Yeah, I just want to be treated as equally as y'all does. At same time, I really appreciated people standing up for me since it's very rare for people doing that for me in real life. I seriously doubt that Jedi didn't meant to offend me, and I'm not. Thanks guys!

Heath is deaf? I had no idea. Isn't English not his first language too? Dude, he can communicate well in a second language that he doesn't have the benefit of hearing/speaking.

First language is ASL. ASL could be problematic since it don't support full sentences/English.
