Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Yeah!

Man, I'm so sad that this thread isn't more active. This game is amazing, and honestly, at this current time it's just way more fun than Star Citizen. I'm backing up both, and really looking forward to SC too, but when I see that one's thread being so much more active than this one, it makes me wonder why the popularity difference is so big.

I was leaving Chango Dock on I Bootis on my way to Aulin, and first thing I notice... a massive silhouette covering the whole dock exit. It was my first time seeing a Lakon Type-9. It was quite something... but I also noticed it was moving funny. I starred to get close to the exit when the Type-9 pilot decided to spin his ship and move it towards the exit, with the longer side of the ship making a cross agains the exit. I don't know how the pilot managed to get his ship like that, but 3 seconds later the exit was a big white explosion, and right after that no more Type-9. So yeah, one guy destroyed his brand new ship just like that...

Could have a been an NPC? i heard they are notoriously bad flyers, and i have yet to encounter some players in this game.

Yeah!

One has more fame i think because of the interwebs reporting on it. ALso currently you can run out of things to do in Elite, so i guess when a new beta hits, the thread will be more active.

Uhm, aww really? I just googled some of the nicknames and yeah, apparently they are pop-culture references.

Oh man, here I was thinking those were all people :(

However I think I might have seen once or twice some "BACKER #??????", but now I'm not so sure anymore.

All you need is use that HOTAS with DK2 and non-VR space sims will be forever ruined for you.

Still worth it.

edit: Oh good, you ordered one!

So I'm using KB + Logitech Xtreme 3d Pro. Is the jump to the x52 worth the hundred and some?

I spent like 7 hours yesterday space trucking, I'm strangely addicted to this. >_< Got my type 6 and am saving up for the type 9 now!

Yeah, I think I need to start some serious trucking to make some cash. Just running around in a Cobra right now.

Can't wait to see what else they have coming, I'm wondering what kind of ships I'll be using in the final game.

If you're willing to spend the money.

Can't you just get a seperate throttle to make it into the kind of HOTAS set up, though?

Yeah!

I am not seeing how the SC thread (1,468 replies) is more active than ED (1,608 replies). People discuss when there are things to discuss about, and currently there are more to discuss about ED as it's closer to release. It doesn't matter anyway because ED will come out first and when it's out we will have a lot of things to discuss, and I have no doubt that word of mouth will spread for that game similar to Divinity Original Sin.

Well, on the other hand, you need to have bought the beta to play Elite. Everyone who backed up to a certain point can play what little there is of SC.

Last of all SC got way more money and popularity.

Yep! I assume it's going to be a long while until I get it, though :(

If you can spend some extra money on something that is not 100% a must, I'd say it's definitely worth it. You will be getting the throttle which will let you get your left hand out of the keyboard and manage throttle and potentially another extra 10+ tasks.

You can check on the last page the pic I posted of all the controls I had on my x52 and think if it'd be worth it not having to move your hands out of the joystick and throttle to perform all that stuff. The only thing you will want to have nearby is the mouse to explore the galaxy map, and maybe the keyboard if you want to search for stars on the map, but I barely do so I just bring the mouse to my "cockpit chair".

Otherwise you could just find a throttle and add it to your joystick?

As for being strangely addicted to just space trucking... I can understand. I did the exact same yesterday and today! I only have my hauler (until now I always played this game so casually I would end up starting new games, lol), and now I got another 20k cr saved so hopefully in a few days I can save for the type-6...

Admittedly I only became aware of this game all of a week ago and now I'm addicted to twitch streams of jumps and asteroid dodging.

This may very well scratch the space-itch I've been having lately. On one hand I wish it was less than $75 to jump in but on the other I wish the $150 package was still around. >_> <_<

I'm loving this but trying not to milk the beta too much. Not really succeeding with that though!

Uhm, aww really? I just googled some of the nicknames and yeah, apparently they are pop-culture references.

On the radar the AI are solid squares and real people are unfilled squares.

Man, some of the people in this game...

Other things I also noticed today is the amount of bad pilots! Some people stay on huge dock entrance for a while searching for their docking number, when they could just have a look at the target HUD. I think many people isn't even aware of that part of huge HUD anyway...
Also another thing that happened in I Bootis was this pilot on his Cobra placing himself right in front of me right when I was about to enter the docks, making me almost crash with him...

Oh and the last one, it just happened about 20 mins ago... this sidewinder was right in the middle of the exit spinning a lot. I wanted to leave and the guy wouldn't move for like a minute, so I rammed him with my hauler and he reacted moving back, crashing on some wall and exploding. My hull was at 99% so no big deal :D

And even with all of this (or perhaps because of all of this?) I love this game, even when I'm just hauling stuff from one planet to another.

I have no idea what any of this is but it sounds awesome. :)

Ended up buying it, done a few of the scenarios, but I'm having a couple of issues with the radar thus far, does anyone know of some good resources to help me understand it better?

I looked into it and can't seem to find of any standalone throttles. If anybody knows of one, let me know!
Standalone throttles only work with their "set" of other controls. CH, for example, sells sticks, pedals, and throttles separately so you can assemble your own perfect rig. With ones like Thrustmaster or Logitech, you're stuck with whatever you buy, there are no "addons" for them, as far as I'm aware.

I just bought one straight up.. Thrustmaster HOTAS-X. It's pretty good bang for the buck if you're on a budget, and far better in E:D than any gamepad or KB/M combo could ever be.

Yeah that's the one I've got and I'm really happy with it for the price. I mean x52's are far nicer, but I really wasn't sure I wanted to spend £100 on a stick.

How do I exit supercruise with my x52 pro?

Hammering C is not working. No key is actually working if a set the x52 pro as control default.

It's the same button as engaging super cruise.

I've put it on the big green button on the thrust thingy (don't know the english term but in german its Schubregler) :) ...

Ok thanks guys. Is there anything else I should change in the control options for using the rift & my hotas?

First thing I would do is get Voice Attack and have your gear, lights and cargo scoop be voice commands. Frees up your third up/down switch on your stick, maybe make it a increase/decrease scan range or something more useful.

I think I will revise my controls on the x52. I use all my switches on the joystick to do multiple things like bringing the landing gear, going into silent mode or the hyper space jumps. I'm fine with all of them except the jumps, seeing how I have to get my hands out of the joystick when I want to do it, which is not the best when I'm arriving to a new station :/

Still in love with Elite. I'm nearly up to 2m credits now in my Type 6 (wish there wasn't going to be a reset...)

I can't wait for the full release. Nothing comes close to my anticipation for this game.

Anyone here using ED with the Rift DK2 ?

I have no problems running it without the DK2, Stable 60fps everything at maximum.

But when i enable the Rift Fps drops to 23fps and dont go up regardless of option settings.

ED with the DK2 at 23fps is nausea and vomit.

Anyone have any light ?

That's currently a problem with most games on DK2. In ETS2 I had to go from Best graphics to medium to get a stable 75fps. In Elite I had to scale some stuff back. I would get 75 fps in space but nearing and inside stations it would drop quite a bit and get me motion sick...

As for being strangely addicted to just space trucking... I can understand..

That's why I find Euro Truck Sim 2 so enthralling, and it's why I'm looking forward more to playing Elite than Star Citizen. I just want to ferry cargo around, make money to upgrade my truck / ship, and look at cool scenery while I do it. Sure Elite has some combat now and then, but hell in ETS2 I play bumper cars with traffic while speeding down the highways anyway so it's similar!

Is anyone here playing Elite with an old Saitek X45? I don't have the newer X52 and was wondering how the old HOTAS works with the game.

Yeah, this is what I'm on.

Works fine, but it's showing it's age a bit. I need a newer piece of kit.

The main reason I haven't bought an X52 already is because I love the rudder rocker on my old X45 and I'm not too fond of the "stick twist" method the X52 uses. I fly a good bit of FSX and rudder control is important. And I really don't want to have to buy both an X52 and a set of rudder pedals just to replace my trusty X45....

I wish the X52 had the same rudder rocker on it, lol.

But its strange on my case.

I believe its something related to Vsync, because the fps stay locked at 23.

This is a fair point, and adjustments to new input methods is three quarters of the battle when switching, but I personally never found that rocker all that much better than stick twist in most cases.

I am *this* close to investing in pedals, but am holding off since I'm in the same boat. What to upgrade to, and what additional peripherals are my best bet. Pedals seem to top that list, though.

So my X52 Pro finally arrived. Is the picture ealier in the thread with controller configuration the best/easiest way to set up flightstick for Elite? Would appreciate any help, thanks!

I just caved and picked the game up over the weekend and it picked up my X52 immediately and the image earlier in this thread is the default control scheme.

I did have to change the options from M/KB to joystick but that's it.

Thanks, yeah I noticed it had a default control scheme in-game; was just wondering if that was the preferred method, if the picture was different, etc. I couldn't figure out how to look around the cockpit/check out UI stuff, but I'm probably still being slow this morning.

If I remember you have to press the pinky switch and a hat direction to focus on the UI screens. You can click the mouse wheel on the front of the throttle to enable free look.

I can't remember which hat to use for UI focus because I switched over pretty quickly to my TrackiR. I will say it did take a bit to get the stick down. The labels on that diagram can be confusing as to what the button actually does on which screen.

I still use the mouse to look around. Less anyone else has their X52 set up differently. I have the X52 not the Pro.

Thanks for the replies; I'll keep messing around with it when I get a chance. To be clear though, those who are using the flight sticks, is that your only method of control, or are you suppementing with keyboard and/or mouse, etc.

Sounds like RaptorGTA is using the mouse to freelook. Hoping this control setup seems less complicated than me using kb/m previously. Maybe I just need more coffee today :P

OK, after a few hours of playing, I've came to the realisation that I'm quite pish at flying. Supercharge can be a bit of a tricky dick, but I think I've got the hang of it now.

Majority of control is done through the HOTAS. The only things I use on the keyboard are things like landing gear and basic ship functions, nothing to do with actual flight. Most of those are also controlled by VoiceAttack. I use the mouse only for looking around. Doesn't do much good in combat, just for checking out the surroundings. Eventually, I'll be playing this in the Rift, so the mouse will be redundant at that point, so will the UI-Focus that's currently mapped to one of the stick's buttons.

I press the wheel to go into look around mode, and usually just stick to the hat direction to move the camera around. You can't do super-precise movements, but it works for me when I want to look at something.

Even then, I ordered the DK2 so whenever it arrives (in like October, sadly) I won't have to ever worry again about looking with something else.

But yeah, for precise movements I just use the mouse.

I use my flight sticks for everything except looking around the star map. I do all the ship stuff with either buttons on the HOTAS or just going to the right menu with my flight stick. Then again, most of the times I play this game I'm just trucking around, so I don't need to use all that much stuff!

Mik2121, I totally second your opinion on having a hotas for this game. There's something deeply awesome about slamming a throttle to full and having the ship pop into a hyperspace jump. Totally fucking cool.

I really like using Roccat Power Grid, it runs on your wifi between phone/tablet and PC letting the device control the PC. There are plenty of grids out here already made for Elite, though its petty simple to make your own.

I had issues with the tablet version dropping out here which I suspect was a tablet problem and not the app itself. The version on my phone is great though and if I made a decent mount to put phone at a convenient place on my desk I'd probably use it all the time.

That Roccat stuff sounds interesting. Impossible to use with the DK2 but otherwise great, and with some good UI it could be quite the experience.

Ok I don't get how to scan my environment to pick stuff up with cargo scoop.

I don't see the blue cargo box on the left side when cargo scoop is deployed, I am doing something wrong?
