Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Solo ice climber would be annoying, the 2 character gimmick is what makes them so unique, even compared to Rosalina who isn't the same thing at all.

Damned platform parity.

Thinking about the rumor with Ice Climber, there's kind of a fun trailer they could do.

The camera pans onto them, they're lined up like normal. They act normal for awhile... until Nana grabs Popo from behind and tosses him, "ICE CLIMBER: CLIMBS INTO BATTLE" and then Sakurai explaining them being their own single character now. Maybe even explaining that it was a technical challenge and this was the compromise.

Here's what they should totally do: two moar reveal trailers.

Trailer 1 focuses on the Marioverse. Here, we see Mario fighting Bowser. As Bowser begins to weaken, Bowser Jr. suddenly shows up to aide him! And then somehow Wario shows up and blows everything up w/ a fart because Wario's games are about farts. (throw Dr. Mario in at the end in a short teaser)

Trailer 2 would have Duck Hunt Dog, Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, and R.O.B. revealed. Genius!

One thing that troubles me on the beta theory; if it is indeed beta, what happens if Nintendo adds content that turns out to be objectionable? I suppose this problem could be quashed if we assume that all content is decided upon, or that they've made a point of including every objectionable piece of content into the game in order to get it out of the way...
Well the whole ESRB system is a voluntary standard practice, so no one is saying they couldn't... But they won't. Not only do some store chains require an ESRB rating before they will stock a game but there is the whole issue of good will and their image at stake. They've already shown the ESRB all of the content that can be perceived as objectionable, hence the butt and chest shots of the female trophies.

Tiki and Tharja don't seem to have text either but have the full trophy count, so I'd probably discount the idea of the footage being taken from different builds. Different saves seems likely, though. Or at least an unlock code was used at some point.

I think the text could be explained by if it's just something that pops in a sec later from the model it self. (and when the leaker decided to screencap)

This doesn't look well for the "all star is locked" thing, but still got DLC to potentially fix those hopes though.

Someone posted an image of All Star Mode on the menu screen with a lock on it. In past Smashes, it was a mode where you fight every character in the game in a gauntlet, but you needed to unlock every character to play it. Because of the lock, people believe that the ESRB build did not have every character.
Oh, didn't know that! Thank you!

Hope this is right, can't hate new characters

If it makes you feel better, that "leak" was just posted by a random person, not the original leaker.

A fake out with ending a section of a direct on alt costumes with Doc would be funny. Especially if Sakurai goes like "Wait? Did he just use Mario Tornado!? Is this a real costume??" and then boom "DOC JOINS THE FIGHT"

I think Nintendo missed a big opportunity by not establishing non-slot set versions of characters w/ the custom moves. For example, what if Nintendo established three definitive versions of Palutena w/ respect to custom moves? Imagine dat tier list having like 150 characters on it :P

After Wario's Fart blasting everyone away and the screen fading we cut to a shot of Luigi crawling on the floor in agony (comical agony, not war film half his limbs missing agony) when a shadow appear. "MARIO!" he exclaims and then it cuts to Dr. Mario face and he's says "I'm-a-not-a-here to make-a-you feel-a-better!" and cut to black ending only with Luigi's petrified cry of "OH NO!"

Different saves is the important part, since it indicates that the All Star lock is less likely to mean much.
:(

But I don't even think that Luma is AI? Correct me if I'm mistaken, but doesn't Luma just respond to your input?
True, but Nana's AI only activates when you are separated, and her AI is basically "move in the direction Popo is in". She doesn't even have to time an Up+B to try and recover since she's solo, and I don't remember if she tries to double jump back onto the platform, either. It's pretty basic stuff, not the kind of thing that would make or break a character's inclusion.

Hm? Who thinks that?

I think, if they're cut, it's because they're not relevant.
Since when is relevancy a factor in this roster?

Question: why do folks here think that Ice Climbers take up significantly more memory than Rosalina?

I haven't been paying attention, but people think that? Pretty sure 3DS is capable of having extra characters on screen, lol. Imagine if Nintendo put out a console incapable of running AI.

But I don't even think that Luma is AI? Correct me if I'm mistaken, but doesn't Luma just respond to your input?

Luma responds to input, the Pikmin with Olimar are basically just items with next to no actual AI. Ice Climbers had an actual AI, so it's pretty reasonable to think that it might of caused some performance issues in high-stress situations. Examples being 4 Ice Climbers, items on high, with a particularly detailed level and online play.

No stake in the Climbers, no guess as to whether they are cut or reduced to a single character or not, but it is conceivable that it would be an issue.

But I don't even think that Luma is AI? Correct me if I'm mistaken, but doesn't Luma just respond to your input?

Luma does some pretty basic path finding to return to Rosalina. I was always under the impression that they could given Nana a much more simplified AI akin to this, but sticking closer to Popo and attacking when in range, but I can't really say I know enough tech-wise to make any definite claims.

As for the whole different saves dilemma, it seems a bit hasty to try to draw too many conclusions. We don't really have a whole lot of information to go off of, like which photos were taken when, or what exactly they unlocked other than all the trophies.

I can't even remember what I thought about Space Jam. As a Brit I wasn't really into Michael Jordan or basketball so that whole element was lost. Having seen it in the cinema my parents were with me so I'm sure they were bored as well.

Anyway....

Pic of the day. A panel in the Challenges area will unlock everytime you clear a challenge. When you unlock a panel, you'll see hints for unlocking panels directly adjacent to it on all sides. And this time, each panel will unlock pictures related to the challenge. This is tougher than it looks, you know? The challenges in the 3DS version are a little on the easy side, but the Wii U version challenges might be a bit trickier.

Easy? Doubt I'd be able to unlock all of them lol.

We don't have any reason to actually believe that info.

But yeah. Having just one is Climber might as well be not having either. I'm super curious to see how Sakurai or whoever could take SoPo and make him seem viable. But the Ice Climbers exists as nothing but the team character gimmick. That's all they are. Take that away and they practically don't exist.

Question: why do folks here think that Ice Climbers take up significantly more memory than Rosalina?

Luma seems to be controlled in sort of a parrallel way to Rosalina. As in they basically have a fixed structure. Where as with the Ice Climbers, Nana or Popo are controlled by a CPU at certain points. Someone more tech savy can explain it better than I can but it's possible with a 4vs4 CPU Ice Climber match, those 8 little bodies are too much for the 3DS to handle. Once separated Nana is like level 3 CPU I believe and can do all things a regular character can. Luma and Pikmen don't work like that.

Hm? Who thinks that?

I think, if they're cut, it's because they're not relevant.

Almost every single veteran from Brawl returns, all non-clone non-3rd party do, Duck Hunt Dog joins the battle, Ice Climbers are some of the most competitive characters; explanation for IC's omission: "they're not relevant".

Hmmmm...

But they were never relevant in the first place. That's why they were included in Melee.

And Villager/Mii weren't in Brawl because the violence didn't fit them as characters.

Things change over time. I'm not saying if they're cut then relevance is the reason, but it is a solid reason and Sakurai's mind could have changed since Melee.

I think the entire relevance of Duck Hunt Dog as an ideal NES representative was settled numerous times in the past two threads.
Wow. Then this thread really is cherry picking arguments because there's no way you can convince me Ice Climbers are any less relevant than Duck Hunt Dog. The very fact the the Ice Climbers have been playable in the past two Super Smash Bros titles make them far more relevant than DHD.

And Villager/Mii weren't in Brawl because the violence didn't fit them as characters.
I don't see what that has to do with removing a character who's been in two Smash Bros. games. Sakurai already said he wasn't going to deliberately cut anyone, which means character removals will be attributed to time constraints or technical problems.

But they were never relevant in the first place. That's why they were included in Melee.

After being in two Smash games they should be relevant regardless of original source honestly...

Almost every single veteran from Brawl returns, all non-clone non-3rd party do, Duck Hunt Dog joins the battle, Ice Climbers are some of the most competitive characters; explanation for IC's omission: "they're not relevant".

Hmmmm...

Then why in the world is Dunk Hunt Dog on the roster?

They've been in more Smash games than their own. Their own did not sell particularly well. At best that earns them a "guest" spot which they have now used... Twice.

He added duck hunt dog who is just as irrelevant and rob is back who also is equally as irrelevant, plus we know ice climber enemies appear in Smash Run. Ice Climbers are either getting an over haul (into ice climber) or were cut for technical reasons. The idea they were cut for time like Mewtwo is also a possibility but I have a hard time imagining a scenario where IC were so low on the pecking order that work didn't start on them until late.... Unless the 3ds version had issues with them which lead to their reveal being delayed and eventually cut/edited.

I'm out of the loop, so how do we know there are five extra character left after the latest leak?

Space for 5 more characters on the leaked css + characters from the same series not together + characters from a different series dividing characters from the same series

Generally once everyone is unlocked the roster shuffles to put all characters in the same franchise together.

They are relevant. They're iconic to the Smash Brothers series now.

I love this argument because just plain old true. My brother loves to rag on Jigglypuff like it's been excluded from every Pokemon game since RBY. Jiggly still appears and may not be a focus but by being in 3 Smash games back to back it is plenty relevant, especially in the idiot minds of the people who play smash despite thinking otherwise.
