Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

I think it's far from the best lineup of newcomers.

I've made bold the BIG names from each game. I'm sure you'll probably disagree with me on that, but I mean...who in that lineup appeals to the casual Nintendo fan? Robin, Lucina, Palutena, Dark Pit, Shulk and Greninja are all from games released in the last few years. Duck Hunt Dog and Little Mac are fairly niche characters as well. I seem to be in the minority in not being able to see the appeal of Wii Fit Trainer, and I'm not a big fan of Rosalina either. Mega Man is the only real big-hitter, and even then I doubt kids even know who he is these days.

Compare that to the likes of Bowser, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Peach, Zelda, Diddy Kong, Lucario, Solid Snake...SONIC THE HEDGEHOG?! Nah, Smash 4 might have the most newcomers (and if you count Pokemon Trainer as three separate characters it doesn't even have that), but it's far from the best. AND then you have to take into consideration the cuts.

In this post I learned that Lucario is a bigger deal than PAC-MAN and the Animal Crossing Villager.

For real?

Smash has always been about the past and the present. Characters like Ness,Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Ike, Lucas, Lucario... Were relatively new by the time they appeared for the first time in the series. Shulk is as new as Pikachu and Ness were in the first Smash.

Wasn't Ike in Smash before his Game was even released?

Going full-on retro would have been more amazing than Brawl's roster for me.

Excitebiker, Duck Hunt Dog, Mike Jones, Little Mac, Megaman, Pacman, Simon Belmont, Sukapon, Mach Rider, Takamaru, Ayumi Tachibana, Prince Sable, Ryu Hyabusa, Donbe & Hikari, NES Sport rep, Tamagon...

Making characters that will never have a chance of being in their own game again or that people have never even heard of a playable fighter in smash has always been infinitely more interesting to me than a character I played as last week.
Well you need to keep in mind that not everyone playing Smash grew up in the 80's/90's and so far all the characters have appealed to someone.

You've got retro reps like Pac-man and Duck hunt dog

Modern reps like Robin and Greninja

Most wanted reps like Megaman and Little Mac.

and even the weird off the wall choices like Wii fit trainer

Smash works because its a Nintendo fan service game that manages to incorporate the new and old into one seamless package.

Fire Emblem wasn't a thing on the West when Marth and Roy was introduced in Melee. Pichu was not the most popular Pokemon. Dr. Mario was well...Mario in a lab coat. And I doubt people were so excited with Ice Climbers before either. How many were so pumped at King Dedede reveal? Who already knew Pit was from Kid Icarus during the Brawl trailer?

You can't really say Smash 4 newcomers wasn't the best because they weren't the most recognized characters from a casual fan. Let us remember that Smash introduced a lot of players to games they never knew about, so by that sense Smash newcomers may not be necessarily mean the most popular Nintendo characters.

And as for the cuts, well let's get an official roster confirmation first before declaring the rumored cuts to be 100% true.

That was Roy in Melee. He was there advertising the upcoming Fire Emblem for GBA (it was the one before the first one we got).

He was also grossly misrepresented. Used Sword of Seals but still his snotty pre-promoted stance that everybody hates because Roy is stuck in lvl 20 pre-promote until near end of the damn game. Easily the worst lord whose growths are wasted. Also, if he's using Sword of Seals, he really should have had been Marth with more range and less damage. In a perfect world, we would have gotten Hector or Ephraim instead.

Just a question, guys, when did they add the Megaman 2 Medley and three other tunes to the music section? I hadn't heard them them before, the MM2 is face-meltingly awesome! Love the battle theme for M&L: Dream Team Bros, too.

Mega Man and Nintendogs on Monday
Mario & Luigi and Kirby on Wednesday

That's why we were expecting another song or two today :)

Man, I think I gots legit insomnia or something.

Past few nights I've been super tired, but I physically (or mentally) couldn't get myself to fall asleep, so I'd just spend an hour or so trying to force myself to sleep, which never works. I don't want to keep staying up this late *sigh*

(the only thing I think is missing from Miis are ears, they just look a bit odd without them.)
That can be annoying when trying to capture someone's likeness when their ears are a distinctive feature if their face.

But yeah, I also think Miis are awesome. To say they have no personality is just wrong. Many of the (Nintendo) games they feature in have given them their own personality. It's funny, I don't actually see my own Mii as necessarily me but almost his own character thanks to the way he is portrayed in some games.

Not sure why Sakurai would have to wait for an international Direct before revealing a character when he has Miiverse and the website at his disposal. It's not as though a lot has been happening on the Nintendo Direct front since Iwata's health woes, and the game releases in two weeks.

That being said, I'm still not sure we will see a newcomer in the next hour.

A veteran, maybe. But all of the newcomers have had their own trailers when they were introduced. While they could just casually drop it one on the site, they've marketed newcomer reveals globally in the past.

So while it could happen, there's plenty of reasons why it won't.

Only SmashBros.com already revealed that Multi-Man uses Miis more than two weeks ago.

Well, whatever. It still had the info that it'll use Miis from your system.

Perhaps they're just gonna drop the trailer without any context for the international crowd. Like, a post on Twitter or something "Here's a new trailer for Smash!".
They've done shortnotice stuff like that in the past, I have no doubt they could do it for a Smash trailer.

Well we already know who the newcomers are...

Bowser actually being revamped to not be shit like Brawl was great. Gave people a lot of hope for the other heavy characters finally being good in an official game.

Shame that effort probably hasn't also been applied to making Ganondorf good like in Project M from what we've seen so far.

Pic of the day. The mysterious fighting teams that appear in the Smash Bros. series come in many shapes and sizes, but this time even we don't know what all of them will look like! It's said that they copy faces from Mii characters saved on your system and attack in a large throng…!! But wait, they all have big smiles on their faces. Looks like they're having a good time, so show no mercy and launch them all away!!
Didn't someone call this exactly?

Where's my Iwata, Reggie, Miyamoto picture?

I love Miis more than most avatars for some reason. Maybe it's because I was still fairly young when I got a Wii.
Well I wasn't fairly young when I got mine and like them. It's thanks to their simplicity but flexibility which allows one to capture the likeness of many people. Just compare them to XBox avatars that basically all look the same.

Pokemon X&Y has sold ~12 million copies, but I mean...how of many of them are going to be Smash? How many of them actually like Greninja? Compare Greninja's level of popularity to Charizard or Mewtwo or even Lucario.
Serebii posted, back when Greninja was revealed, that GameFreak had released information that he was the most used Pokémon in Pokémon Amie. I'd say he's pretty popular.
