Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

I just bought a 3DS XL three days ago. Dammit.

Better 3D? I hope that means a better screen (although no res increase is still a pisser).

Second stick is a good move, though I'm not sure that the nipple style was the right way to go. Guess I'd need to try it.

Disappointed that there's no spec bump. The machine's just too weak.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a subtle spec bump like the DSi had.

So this is basically an all new system? Games that are built for the New 3DS's faster processor will either be unsupported or massively gimped on the original 3DS. I'm kind of mad that they're essentially replacing the 3DS after only 3.5 years.

Custom skins is probably the most amusing new feature.

That second analog stick pretty much makes it perfect for Monster Hunter forever.

Who is going to develop 3DS games and ignore most of the userbase? The buttons will probably be useless in 99% of games.

Nintendo I guess (looking at the Xenoblade announcement). The issue with this for me is there's not much coming out for the platform that interests me in the future, I don't feel it's worth the money for an upgrade like this at this point in the products lifecycle. It seems too late for it.

those maniacs went and did it. they went and put an old laptop mouse nub on a 3ds!

seriously, though, this new model actually makes me want to upgrade from my original 3ds.

People thought for the longest time that they'd never incorporate the CPP into the hardware. I'm glad to see it personally. Looks like it'll work fine for camera movement.

Two additional shoulder buttons intrigue me though.

So rather than just some visual and design changes they actually made it more powerful at well, added buttons and features?

Ugggggggggh. This is like the DSi all over again! Guess I gotta get this 3DS at some point.

I don't understand how games are supposed to support this and the control scheme of the existing 3DS. You know, the one that will have the vast majority of the install base behind it. More than that, the 3DS is still so lo-fi that I'm not sure what there is to be gained from dual triggers. None of the announced software seems like it would require this new control scheme.

The obvious answer is that the new control scheme will be largely ignored except for a few Nintendo games.

I'll probably pick up one of these New 3DS eventually, though not at launch. I skipped the LL so I am down for an upgrade.

It's ingenious how they're doing the 3D with head tracking; can't wait to see how it works. I still just have my launch 3DS, so I think I'll get a New XL as soon as it launches.

This is exactly what happened with the DSi. The only difference is, the 3DS will probably be around a fair bit longer now.

We don't know how good that new CPU is, if they've doubled the clock speed and the CPU cores, it could be a massive upgrade.

I kept on saying a revision was coming. I like everything except the tiny c-stick. I hope we see more games take advantage of the extra couple power. This is like the dsi all over again. I bet some of these features will be built upon in Nintendo's next handheld. I really want to check check out the head tracking 3d.

Very nice upgrade but rising the CPU and locking games behind is pretty shitty for consoles.

It happens every year in the mobile phone arena.

I wonder if this is Nintendo's new plan to stay relevant in the handheld space. Iterate every couple of years and retain backwards compatibility.

I don't know what to think of this. At this point they were better off waiting for a new console to add more button and sticks. I'm not rebuying the same console twice, that's insane.

This is a real megaton. It tells us a few things I think:

- There is no "real" 3DS successor in the foreseeable future
- Nintendo has been thinking long and hard about how to extend the 3DS generation
- They've decided that a stop-gap measure with an improved 3DS can buy them a few years

I don't see how this is different than any other handheld lifecycle.
Well, again, even if, say, GBA, GBA SP & GBA Micro are all vastly different GBA models, I don't feel like they warrant a rebuy of the system. They were just those machines in a slightly different form. 3DS XL & now ~New~ 3DS XL are both vastly improved, so much so that holding on to the OG 3DS or OG 3DS XL feels like I'm not getting an experience that could be described even remotely optimal in comparison to the new, improved models.

did anyone see if they moved the volume controls, always hated where it was. Disappointed that they moved the stylus it was easy to get to before (on the xl).

It's the same as the DSi. It's likely that few games will support the extra CPU power. More likely it will just make old games run better. It's also a mid-life revision to boost sales, same as DSi and DS XL.

It'll work, too. I'll buy it no question, just because it looks like a nice upgrade to the 3DS/XL.

no...Xenoblade is exclusive to the new 3DS...and I am afraid this might just be the beginning.

Why would it be the beginning? It makes no financial sense for anyone to make NEW 3DS exclusive games. A shitty port of Xenoblade is probably the exception.

Oh dear, Nintendo....

I knew I was waiting for something! Just didn't know what. Time to replace this ambassador 3ds and get the real deal!

Can't wait to finally pick up resident evil revelations, kid icarus, monster hunter, etc

Erm WTF?
If there are going to be new3DS exclusive games I'm done with the handheld.

Hopefully somebody comes in to set the story straight.

There will be New 3DS exclusive games, just like there were GBC exclusive games, or DSi Ware. Far from the first time Nintendo pulls this one.

You might be surprised!

No, I'd be fucking shocked.

On the plus side, this 3DS looks a lot better balanced than the original model. Now while you destroy your left hand by holding it in a claw grip, you can equally destroy the thumb on your right hand by trying to use that stick.
