Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Seems like a solid upgrade from the OG version.

But I don't like the colored buttons, and I certainly don't like that they decided to use blue for X like everyone else. Gets a little confusing for someone with every console.

did anyone see if they moved the volume controls, always hated where it was. Disappointed that they moved the stylus it was easy to get to before.

Volume now has a slider exactly like the 3D one on the opposite side of the top screen.

This is a real megaton. It tells us a few things I think:

- There is no "real" 3DS successor in the foreseeable future
- Nintendo has been thinking long and hard about how to extend the 3DS generation
- They've decided that a stop-gap measure with an improved 3DS can buy them a few years

Yup.

Depending on how successful this strategy is, there may never be a "real" successor, or at least not for a long time.

I'm utterly confused ...

I like all the improvements, but games exclusive to this because it has a slightly more powerful CPU without it being a totally new device it's the N64 all over again, it was bad back then, and it's still now.

Also the name .. that's SNES Street Fighter level if silly long names ....

When you look at Apple and the iPhone and how they release a new version each year with internal and external changes, maybe Nintendo have decided to take a page out of that playbook?

I'm really interested to see if the improved CPU will have an effect on older games, like Pokemon X Y have poor framerates, maybe they will run smooth on the New 3DS.

Just announced during the Nintendo Direct.

Includes:

- better 3D
- second stick
- NFC built-in
- coloured buttons
- more buttons
- better battery (up to 7h)
- now compatible with microSDCard
- you can back up data on your PC via wireless.
-browser improved, now works with HTML5
- CPU improved, makes browsing Miiverse / eShop much faster.
- can switch designs now (covers)
Do older models still get these?

Without a unified account system I'm not sure I trust Nintendo to make sure all my purchases transfer to a new unit without any issue.

Man, fuck Nintendo. This is the type of shit that makes me hope they get buried soon. Release a new version with more controls and features that would work better for games? Guess I should have expected to the king of revisions and tacky add ons to do this sooner or later.

Meh. It's annoying but I'll deal and stick with my XL. Not like there's an influx of must have games aside from Smash and a few indie titles I can get elsewhere.

I'm in. Xenoblade and Persona Q and the fact that this will be the only supported portable console moving forward (goodnight Vita) means I'll reluctantly get back in.

Up to 7hr battery is glorious btw

the hell you on about?

Nintendo was first.

I think the system is Japan only for now. Why? The Nintendo direct would have been translated otherwise.

As for exclusive games. Remember the first party DSi only retail release of Face Training in Europe :P Basically all these revisions get a few. Wait for the next system if it bothers you.

Damn, now i need to cancel my Super Smash 3DS XL Bundle ... :(
At least the announcement came just in time, now hoping for MH4 Bundle :D

They're the only ones who've actually done it successfully so far. They're also the only ones to let you play all of your old content on their new systems, too.

yes.

but the most important question is will they add colored buttons to WiiU's gamepad?

With a better CPU, I wonder if it's possible to press the Home button while playing MH4U.

Capcom please.

EDIT: Or would they need more memory? I don't know. :(

I wonder if this is setting up for the eventual announcement that the New 3DS can be used as a controller for the Wii U?

With the addition of a second analog stick
nub
and the extra trigger buttons, the new 3DS now has the capability for the same inputs as the Wii U controllers, right? It even has the NFC support.

a few years? If they think that then IMO they're fucked. They've done most of their normal IPs, and they don't tend to release twice on one platform.

the spec bumps just scream DSi which got almost no support in a meaningful way (was by far my worst Nintendo hardware purchase)

This might buy them a few hardcore users double dipping, but any exclusive software is going to get relatively tiny numbers. They need a proper follow up really soon - but from the look of this that is more likely to be 2016 than 2015 (but I still hope we get something next year)

This is my #1 issue with the new handheld as well.

Not interested in starting a 3DS collection. At least give me a hassle-free method of transferring my stuff so I can upgrade.

Also not feeling the second "stick". It looks even worse than the PSP's nub, and that piece of shit killed my thumb.

It happens every year in the mobile phone arena.

I wonder if this is Nintendo's new plan to stay relevant in the handheld space. Iterate every couple of years and retain backwards compatibility.

If that's how are they going to do it I won't support them. This are consoles for games and not phones. Still maybe it's just this one game if not fuck them.

no...Xenoblade is exclusive to the new 3DS...and I am afraid this might just be the beginning.

I doubt exclusives will be the norm for a while, but he did say that future 3DS games can be developed to run better on the New 3DS.

If that's how are they going to do it I won't support them. This are consoles for games and not phones. Still maybe it's just this one game if not fuck them.

Why? How is this any different than getting an all new console with backwards compatibility? This just makes the generational transition more gradual.

Don't know why people are surprised about exclusive games... Nintendo has done stuff like this in the past, and putting a few exclusives in there helps migrate the audience over. 99% of games will obviously not be exclusive.

This also will serve as a test if a more powerful hardware revision actually splinters a userbase or do users just grumble and upgrade.

I honestly believe its the latter.

I predict users will grumble and upgrade, because of the precedent that's been set with every piece of mobile hardware in the last 5 years, and because it's a legitimately useful hardware bump.

Definitely. This is a bold new direction for the company in terms of how to revitalize themselves in the industry.

For me all these things were already obvious (if new version) more than a year ago : I "predicted" this announcement yesterday with NFC feature and in older posts I (not alone) "predicted" an new model would come with better battery / better 3D / Mbetter iiverse/web navigation / NFC. Only thing I didn't anticipate is the 2nd stick.
