Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

did anyone see if they moved the volume controls, always hated where it was. Disappointed that they moved the stylus it was easy to get to before (on the xl).

Nintendo trying to go the Apple route with their naming. It's been about 3 years since I bought my 3DS so I don't mind upgrading. But sucks for the people who just bought one this week.

I'm sure this model will launch on NA with the MH4U or the smash bros if we are lucky enough.

Anyway it's a day 1 hands down

The diehards will upgrade. Question is how many of those that bought a 3DS years ago haven't moved to mobile?

How many of those actually bought more than one game?

I think Nintendo is starting to realise that raw amount of hardware sales means little if the attatch rate isnt high. They are going to cater for their base first and worry about the casuals later.

That said, once a big title *cough* monster hunter *cough* pokemon *cough* is released, the casuals will be back.

This is a real megaton. It tells us a few things I think:

- There is no "real" 3DS successor in the foreseeable future
- Nintendo has been thinking long and hard about how to extend the 3DS generation
- They've decided that a stop-gap measure with an improved 3DS can buy them a few years
I don't see how this implies any of that. GBA SP was released in the year prior to Nintendo DS' launch and GBA Micro was launched AFTER Nintendo DS. Nintendo could still perfectly well launch 3DS' successor in mid-to-late 2016, if they aren't completely aimless & clueless where they are going to take their handhelds in the future.

I need the small one. Better battery life and improved screen.

Did he say how much internal storage there was? I think he keept saying 1GB, but I'm not sure.

Cover plates are an ingenious idea IMO, I wonder why no other handhelds has featured something like it yet.

I wonder when these are coming to the west, looks like it's time to shuttle my current XL.

For me all these things were already obvious (if new version) more than a year ago : I "predicted" this announcement yesterday with NFC feature and in older posts I (not alone) "predicted" an new model would come with better battery / better 3D / Mbetter iiverse/web navigation / NFC. Only thing I didn't anticipate is the 2nd stick.

You weren't Wong

Great announcement to wake up to! I sold my OG 3DS years ago because I wasn't using it enough. The library has filled out nicely and I can't pick up this model.

/don't worry vita I'll always love you

Definitely. This is a bold new direction for the company in terms of how to revitalize themselves in the industry.

or it is just par for the course with Nintendo - they've done this plenty of times in the past. I don't think you can consider it a bold new direction just yet.

Personally I think that model could work (iterative hardware like iphone), but I'd want them to start with the next platform

It really sucks that the faceplates are only for the small model. The designs on those are all vastly better than the limited edition XLs we've had.

I was gearing up to get a 3DS LL for Japanese games but I'll definitely wait for this now.

I'm actually considering the New 3DS instead of the New 3DS LL. I have a 3DS XL and it gets heavy after a while, so a more svelte model would be nice. Also, the screen on the New 3DS is bigger than the original 3DS, so that's another plus. And those Super Famicom buttons. Hmmmm.

But it's not a new console just a new model.

That's just an argument of semantics. It's new hardware with new features. It's just that, right now, it's primarily for playing 3DS games.

This might buy them a few hardcore users double dipping, but any exclusive software is going to get relatively tiny numbers. They need a proper follow up really soon - but from the look of this that is more likely to be 2016 than 2015 (but I still hope we get something next year)

2015 is pretty clearly their year of the Wii U, they're not going to be releasing any new system next year. Announcing, maybe.

Sounds like they needed a way to keep the 3DS going until the Wii U is over and release that combo system that's coming. ;)

anyone wanna buy a mint condition 3DS XL

one week old

fuck

I get the feeling this will be basically marketed as 'the Amiibo machine'. In the Direct there was a lot of emphasis on how NFC is integrated. Plus the logo uses the Amiibo style.

This bundled with Smash and maybe a Mario Amiibo will do gangbusters come Christmas.

a few years? If they think that then IMO they're fucked. They've done most of their normal IPs, and they don't tend to release twice on one platform.

the spec bumps just scream DSi which got almost no support in a meaningful way (was by far my worst Nintendo hardware purchase)

The thing is the dsi and dsi xl were both huge successes and easily reinvigorated ds sales for, I think, 2 years. The dsi got very little exclusive support but that didn't matter.

Obviously the market has changed but this was a predictable move by Nintendo.

Would've liked it if they had just made a whole new handheld instead, also would've liked to play the Xenoblade game but I guess I will be skipping it then.

Can't really justify buying a new one when my XL is perfectly fine as it is for me.

This isn't the GBA SP. This has enhanced hardware which supports software which will not run on the regular 3DS. That is the fundamental factor to look at.

Of course Nintendo had to be different and include some weird sized second stick instead of just having it the same size...

Laughable.

So the new "portable" is just a beefed up 3DS?

Same resolution?
Same GPU?
Only better CPU?

This is beyond pitiful.

Well they also need to get the QoL platform out before introducing a new generation. Personally it's not an issue since I'm getting the new model, I actually prefer not to rush out new hardware. The problem though I don't see this accomplishing anything in terms of turning their business around.

The ergonomics remain the same. I don't find the 3DS OG or the XL comfortable to hold. I'll be skipping it. I want a handheld that I don't have to cramp my fingers up to use.

Cool, do you want a cookie?

Never can understand why people brag about something they predicted coming true. You do realize how lame this looks, right?

Anyone know what was being said during the Smash gameplay where there was a vertical screen split between 3DS XL and the new XL? Wondering about screen quality.
