Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

I'm surprised how few people in this thread accurately remember the DSi. Nintendo has a history of this so why the surprise? Like the DSi there will be some exclusive retail titles but the bulk will be download-only. Up to pubs.

(hopefully) Irrational fear of the day:

If Nintendo Europe decide that MH4U only works with the new version I will kill someone or something.

I know Nintendo wouldn't stoop to that.....

Yes, completely and utterly useless if you want to play a Japanese-only (pending a localization that likely will never come) downgrade of Xenoblade.

If it's the exact same game (aside from the graphics), then the localization is already done. I'm sure it will be released worldwide.

Nice. I actually like the little stick btw. Considering the minimal amount of use a 2nd stick gets in the games that actually use it, a mini nub right next to the buttons is kind of perfect.

Definitely going to import the smaller model with the color coded buttons. I don't trust NoA to actually retain them.

Backing up data to PC through wireless is a surprsing feature coming from Nintendo. Hope it won't be slow as shit.

Holy Shit this is amazing! Need this in my veins. I was always dissappointed that we couldnt change the wallpapers of anything on the old one.

it's not like we didn't see this scenario from nintendo before..it really sounds like GB vs Gb color all over again..with the difference that the gb color came out after many, many years of life of the GB

I am sooo glad I held off on buying a 3ds, I was going to get one this month but will now happily wait for this one to come out. Patience is a Virtue.

I was gonna give my old 3DS XL (which seems to be chugging a bit lately) to my bro and buy one of the limited edition ones. Guess I'll wait now. Don't die on me for a few more months....

That region lock though.

Might want to hold out for the European version if you want the colored buttons if NoA turns them into the US colors.

You literally just copy and paste the contents of your old SD card to the new one, using a PC. This is how it has always been done if you are changing SD cards.

Well, the images confirm a new charging dock, so that seals the deal. Day one purchase of the regular size version. I am excited that they increased the screen size a bit on the regular. If I were to make a wish list of changes, this would have covered pretty much everything. If only this were hitting stores here in October as well. Damn.

okay thanks i just thought you swapped the cards after the license transfer was done

I was considering upgrading to an XL for Smash Bros, but now I guess I should wait and play it on my OG 3DS for a while. A shame there won't be a special edition Smash Bros XL in the US though.

Ugggh

Im really torn. Its like Nintendo knew damn well they needed just that extra little nub for smash bros and that thier fanbase would buy a new system optimized for just that (and xenoblade).

Weird time to announce, I'm assuming a lot of people were planning on buying 3ds for smash and the new pokemon.

as much as I love my 3DS XL, the slightly larger screen and SNES buttons of the White Regular one is seriously winning me over.

The face plates are a huge plus too. Hopefully we can get some transparent ones so we can put our own designs behind them.

Wonder if custom Wallpaper will be a thing too? (I mean our own images)

Except as Sakurai pointed out, the reason that the Wii U and 3DS versions of Smash Bros are being spaced apart is because they need to be thoroughly tested. This port will still have to pass the usual muster, and depending on how much code they changed for the port it might have to be localized from scratch. Considering how the localization of the Wii version went (NOA passing on it initially because they didn't think it would make a profit, and that was on the Wii with millions of users) I have serious doubts that this port will be localized.

Okay, this is the first time that I'm genuinely frustrated with Nintendo's digital account/non-account shenanigans. I haven't played my 3DS in a while and I'm insanely busy lately, so I'd be more than happy to sell my current XL on eBay now and wait for the new systems to come out ... but now I have over $100 of digital goods anchored to my existing system that I need to hold on to because of the ridiculous idea that I need to physically have the old system to transfer my stuff over. :/

And really, that name. "The New 3DS"? It was terrible and misguided when Apple did it, but at least they have the marketing clout and clarity of message to brute-force people's general understandings of what to do. But now you have even enthusiast gamers debating and confused over whether this is a "new" generation or not. (Spoiler alert: If you announce your new platform along with an exclusive port of freaking Xenoblade, a game that I just recently started getting into and really, really, REALLY am digging, then this is a new generation.)

The DSi was not announced with an exclusive port of one of Nintendo-GAF's most generally revered cult classics. The rough equivalent might be if Sony decided to release a "the new Vita" with an exclusive, albeit mildly choppy port of Dark Souls.

Fans in US are thinking, "Yay, Xenoblade portable!"

NoA is thinking, "Yay, 2nd analog means Call of Duty!"

NoA releases Declassified 3D Deluxe bundle in America!

Joking aside, a perfect opportunity for a new Prime Hunters!

I wasn't going to get it but after hearing that it has the extra ram and how Xenoblade is exclusive for the new 3DS, I might pick it up.

But Nintendo has to price it right as I already paid £200 for my launch model 3DS.

I really hope that they release a New 2DS as well. Or at least make the hinges out of sturdier stuff on the New 3D XL.

I don't care about 3D, but I care about the hinges not breaking.

Yeah, when these come to Euope I'll have to consider replacing my OG 3DS.

Poor thing has been used for over thousand hours so... yeah.

It looks more like an impressive mod of the original 3DS than a true upgrade, to be honest. I actually kinda like that they are (still) doing these minor hardware upgrades once in a while (and in a similar way Apple does it, didn't expect that from Nintendo), but the design is a mess.

Oh well, might still buy it someday to upgrade from my original 3DS to a XL and for some of the exclusive features if games actually use them.

What does Smash Bros have to do with anything? It's a completely different game. Obviously it will still have to go through QA, but that doesn't have anything to do with how easy it is to localize.

If this new 3DS can't do SNES vc games and GBA vc games I'll be so disappointed
Long shot would be N64 vc games

Lol I was gonna buy a 3DS XL with smash to replace my old 3DS XL too, guess I'll wait now

That second stick is so bad, but it below the buttons

you do realize a Japanese system and an American one are identical, right?

region lock isn't a hardware issue. The only localization that would be needed (assuming it's the same Xenoblade we know and doesn't have some new network or community features) is the one that was already done for Wii. That content just needs to be downscaled.

That region lock though.

Might want to hold out for the European version if you want the colored buttons if NoA turns them into the US colors.

I'm getting a Japanese one specifically to get JP games, though.

I wonder if they'll still allow system transfers. If I could transfer everything on my current OG JP 3DS to the new one, that'd be great.
