Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

I'm surprised how mad people are getting about this. Between gameboy colour and DSi XL this is pretty standard for Nintendo. The only reason the GBA didn't get a revision of this sort was because of its short lifespan due to that failed "third pillar' stuff alongside the DS.

It's really not that shocking that they're doing this, and the only "new" software that's announced at this point in a Xenoblade port. Nothing to freak out over. I really don't get the "oh I bought the Zelda 3DS XL (or other special versions) for nothing?" reactions either. You bought a product that you wanted to use, you didn't buy it for nothing. On top of that you bought a nearly 3 year old product. Everything product has a lifespan and you know that going into it.

And hell, the 3DS' lifespan isn't even close to over yet, really, the vast majority of software will probably still just be for it anyway.

The 3DS XL had no charger in Europe, but I believe an outroar caused them to include it in America. There's a similar warning on European boxes.

I can't see any warnings on 3DS LL boxes that there is no charger, but it would make sense.

This 3DS LL limited edition bragged about including a charger...

LL is essentially the same as XL, so extra large size.
Japan has a different nomenclature for their sizes than western countries do.
It's like the difference between the American English "chips" and the British English "crisps". Their the exact same thing, it's just a different word.
 
Wow it doesn't take much at all for Nintendo to flip the table. New 3DS will dominate MC chart for many months to come. Then they can release New WiiU with upgraded spec later. Good on them.

People know what it means when you put NEW in front of the name of the hardware. All they have to do is make sure their marketing is clear.
 
NFC/Amiibo support means Pokemon Amiibo are coming. Prepare your wallets. And your buttholes. Ninty about to make a laaaata money.

Can you charge them only with a computer? :( And btw, I have an old DSi, can I use the charger from that with the 3DS?
 
Exclusive games? Why Nintendo. I could live with it if they're all just last gen ports (Wii owner), but I'm still not particularly happy with idea. Especially considering how it seems to be months between notable game releases on the 3DS already.

No cable whatsoever is included so only if you have an older charger. They state on the box which older chargers work. DSi and newer I think.

My friend got one and couldn't play for a week because he didn't know about it. He's quite informed, but got it online where it's hard to see the warning on the box.

Leaning towards that one myself. Seriously, the XL was okay for me but not so much of an improvement that I was willing to upgrade from my OG 3ds. This one however is perfect for me. Also the changeable faceplates are amazing and the second stick now pretty much guarantees that the next Nintendo handheld will have dual sticks. I don't know how this new model will affect sales or market trends or whatever, all I know, is that I need one!

A better processor, a better internet browser, a better battery (the nub), a second stick, two additional shoulder buttons, changeable faceplates, integrated NFC, skinnable OS, new exclusive games (like the Xenoblade port, which isn'T exactly a new game, but it's not playable on regular 3DSs).

It's like the jump from DS to DSi.
Old games probably won't suddenly use AA or have a better framerate just because the processor is better. I'm pretty sure the processor will be clocked down in order to play regular 3DS games and clocked regularly when playing games that are playable with enhancements on New 3DS/XL.

The New 3DS series is just another "in-betweener" from Nintendo, just like the GBC, GBA SP and Micro and the DSi were.

Because you're a sucker like the rest of us who foolishly thought Nintendo would actually support a system rather than try and force everyone to upgrade to a marginally better system by putting exclusive content on said marginally better system.

I am in the same boat, can't believe Nintendo has convinced me to sell my larger XL so I can buy a smaller version.
 
Made a new thread about this... but the neogaf gods decided it wasn't to be... so I'll move the discussion to this thread.

PREFACE: I'm not an expert on computers/cpus/gpus/etc but I do have at least a fair understanding... This is all conjecture and I'm very VERY willing to have people more knowledgable step in and correct me thoughts. I will update the OP in kind.


We know the new 3DS will be have a faster CPU... but how much? To ask that, let's first consider what we already know about the 3DS...

Judging by all of this, we can (probably) safely assume that the 3DS base clock is 134mhz, with the GPU and ARM11 CPU being on a 2x multiplier.

We know (or guess?) that the GPU itself will be maintaining it's same clock rate, and is thus going to be running on an independent multiplier from the CPU.

So, realistically this means that the New 3DS ARM11 is likely running 402mhz or 536mhz meaning a 50-100% overall speed boost to the primary processor in the system. We may be able to narrow this down further, but this is where I'm not sure... I'm not sure if the CPU/GPU/DSP would all need to run on full integer ratios.

For example 402mhz is a 3:1 ratio to the DSP/ARM9, but it's a 1.5:1 ratio on the GPU which I'm not sure would work.

So yeah, now that I've outted myself as being completely inept, any more experienced people wish to throw their input in?

I love my XL, but it's fucking big to hang around.

It's a new major revision that has unique physical additions and exclusives that cannot be played on previous hardware. Yet, the interface and name are mostly the same and will share games from the previous generation. Nintendo just made every 3ds on huge market obsolete. There's little reason to develop 3ds only games rather than n3DS exclusives. So now we'll have the market of old 3DS and n3DS. The name doesn't highlight the changes and merely indicates to consumers it's new. How is that not a divide in the consumer bases? Don't act like Nintendo has a great history with console names and their success in the market


As far as the iPad comparison, apple is far more successful than Nintendo in conveying their differences in hardware. An iPad can do far more than a 3ds; it's much closer to a computer and can allow for revisions without compromising most existing applications. Does this mean Nintendo is done with regular 3ds games? Will Nintendo make n3ds enhanced versions? Are they gonna sell their n3ds games in the same space as the hardware that CANNOT play these games?

Will never happen. Why would they do that? They've never done this with one of their home consoles before.

So going to have to consider what base colour and cover will look best.

One time I'd not be sad with the Japanese version coming out first.
 
So the screen is bigger for New 3DS, but is the overall system bigger?
There was a lot of wasted space on 3DS, so I hope it's not bigger.

Definitely leaning towards New 3DS over New 3DS XL.
 
LOL This is ridiculous. I'm gonna rock my OG til the wheels fall off unless they give this a good price and a promotion with Gamestop where I can trade it in.

Uhh how? It makes more sense for 3rd parties to focus on regular 3ds, so they can focus on both markets.

While this is true, on previous systems, there was always some sort of cost saving associated with dropping BC. GBM was able to finally drop the antiquated GB chipset, DSi got rid of the bulky GBA port, Wii redesign got rid of the controller ports and simplified the disc drive design.

In the new 3DS there is nothing to save by dropping BC. The DS internals are built into the SOC, and therefore can't be dropped without majorly redesigning it (which would just be more expensive) and there are no DS exclusive ports to drop either. On top that, with digital DSiWare games sitting on the system, dropping support for them would probably create a lot more controversy than dropping support for physical games (what happens to my DSiWare when I do a system transfer?).

So yeah, makes sense that they're keeping it this time. I suspect the same to be true of the Wii U if it ever gets a redesign.

Some software doesn't work on iPad 2/iPad mini (non retina). The iPad mini is still being sold, but its HW is very old. Here is one example features on NeoGAF.

My first gen iPod touch lacked some features and developers would lock apps out of it by needing a microphone. That was very late in its life and iPhone OS 4 was never made available for it which made it easy to lock apps out of the poor old ARM11 chip :P
It is fairly straight forward when you get a simple "this app is not compatible" because everything is online.
