Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

I'm not going to step into the new-iteration or iterative-improvement debate, but all I know is...since I've still been using a launch 3DS machine with a Circle Pad Pro attachment, that New 3DS XL may as well be a new console for the dramatic improvement there is. And I'm going to get one.

I just got into this thred, what's the general consensus? I need one of these ASAP, if only for the awesome colored buttons! I'm a bit skeptical about the nub, but stoked to see a couple extra shoulder buttons in there. Hopefully there will be more than 5 games that support this.
There is no consensus, some people are acting like this is the worst thing Nintendo has ever done while others are pleased.

Ah! I love this design!

This is my favourite so far! I love white and light pink!
I love all pastel colours, but pink and white and seafoam green and white are my favourite colours and combinations ever!

This is why I have too many 3DSes... I just love their designs too much... *_*

OH NICE! Now you can just buy face plates.

But seriously tho, as I said I just fucking bought my 3DS XL 2 weeks ago... I wouldn't mind so much a revision with same buttons and same internals, but damn it, this is a full on 3.5DS.... second stick, extra buttons, higher CPU, this shit matters. Like someone said before, I waited till E3 to make sure there was no announcement. Should have waited till TGS! Gah...

Well my daughter is 1, so maybe I'll get it for her 2nd or 3rd bday I suppose. Her hands are too small for the 3DSXL (and she doesn't need to play Senran Kagura Burst and Resident Evil Revelations on my system). That light pink and white one is beautiful and they really should have kept the coloured buttons for the LL/XL. The coloured letters just aren't as cool.

It's such a weird design choice. I mean, if they were going to give in to the second analog stick, why not like...actually make it more practical? I feel like while the casual gamer might not want a second stick, they wouldn't have cared if there was a bigger one at the bottom. Especially if there was an option to not use it. It's not like it would take up anymore space. So why NOT make it properly?

I'm guessing it was both a size and wanting to stay close to the 3DS design thing.

Did they announce an account system? I'd like to sell my 3ds xl before this releases, but obviously can't if i have to transfer everything again.

Yep, I was just thinking 'maybe I should sell my XL before Europe realizes a new one is coming' -> 'fuck, I can't'.

It's a Nintendo handheld... Even the DS was replaced by the DSi in 4 years, that was the longest gap since the original Game Boy was replaced by GBC.
DSi wasn't supported so it wasn't a problem. Nintendo putting their weight behind this makes me think it's not going to be the same "optional" upgrade.

Well if you were an expert on the Japanese game Market you'd know pretty much every time Nintendo has done a new revision to one of their handhelds, it has been met with success, and they sell like crazy every time.

How many times does Nintendo have to do this and have it succeed before people stop claiming how it will be some sort of horrible, back stabbing decision that will somehow blow up in their face and ruin their image?

Splitting the user base on handhelds doesn't really matter. Its only on consoles where that doesn't work. People like getting shiny new handheld devices every 2-3 years or so. The only issue with it is probably the name, which at least in the west will probably lead to marketing confusion on what works with what.. but I don't think Japan will have that problem.

omg he fell for it

Due to a store credit, sales, and some deal hunting I recently purchased a 3DSXL with case, screen protectors and 9 games for less than $250.

I don't regret it; I will skip the N3DS and wait for the the 3DS successor.

I do hope DS hardware iteration specific exclusive titles does not become the norm.

To be fair, the DSi did not really replace the DS, as there were virtually no exclusive retail games for it and the games that did make use of the hardware almost always just used the camera for ancillary purposes.

Wow this came out of nowhere.... I really like the metallic blue color and if they release it here I just may have to get it since there's going to be exclusive games for it damn.

that thing hinges on whether the 2nd stick is any good to use, seeing as they wouldn't add one if they didn't want devs to utilise it. If not, then what the hell is the point

Goddammit. There's no way I'm buying this. As soon as I do they'll announce the 4ds for late 2015,early 2016. Ugh. I'm already losing interest in handhelds and this shit doesn't help at all.

How does the new stick feel though? Seems like some people have already had some hands on with it. I'm mostly curious about how the resistance on it is gonna feel. Is it like the original 3DS slide pad, the psp nub, the gamecube stick or that nub you find on IBM thinkpads.

You must be new here =P

That meme is as old as the FF XIII Xbox 360 announcement.

Dunno if I'll jump on this right away. I barely use my 3DS as it is, and as much as I like Xenoblade a port isn't enough incentive for me to upgrade, at least right away. I never bought a DSi, nor felt it was necessary. so I guess we'll see if this ends up being a similar situation.

I'm am a bit curious as to how big of a boost the CPU got. I doubt it's huge but if it's enough to run Wii ports then maybe the 3DS can finally fulfill that role of being a handheld Gamecube/Wii.

Ok wait... so not only does it have the 2nd analogue stick/nub, but it also has 2 more shoulder buttons for a total of 4?

And people still just cough at this as a "hardware iteration" which will get barely any exclusive titles?

At this point I'm in the same boat. Every time Nintendo release a new system they drop support for it sooner than they did the last system. They think they can do what the phone manufacturers do but they can't. I fully expect the Wii U to be superseded within a year with the stupid decisions they're making lately.

I'll need that c-stick for Smash + Monster Hunters, finally I won't need to travel with my CPP :)

Do we know how much better the hardware is?

I feel like that second analog "stick" is a perfect encapsulation of Nintendo's present problem where their hardware isn't sufficient for the "core" but also not suitable for casuals.

Most gamers don't want a second stick. Given that most portable gamers seem to be happy with no sticks at all, the number who feel a second stick is a significant improvement represent a distinct minority. But of those who do want a second stick, what they've created will be entirely unsatisfactory. They want two built in, full analog sticks similar to the Vita, not two slide pads which are asymmetric both in position and in shape, giving a tiny nub on the right hand side. This second "analog stick" is not enough for the "core" gamers who aren't already on board, too much for the casuals who would be fine without an analog stick entirely.

Absolutely. It's the most half-assed, conservative decision I think I've ever seen in a hardware revision. Incredible.

For the longest time I thought it was one revision not two. Not sure which one to get now.

I love the faceplates idea, though. I always wanted a themed console of a game I love and this makes it a lot more possible.

OH NICE! Now you can just buy face plates.
I can? Oh yay!

Now I can save money on my buying too many 3DSes for the designs because I can just buy the plates. Yay!

I love 3DS designs so much. They're like, my favourite video game system designs ever. I don't know why Nintendo decided to be so stylish and fashionable. But they're amazing for doing it.

I wish someone would make desktop cases with designs like this.

Well my daughter is 1, so maybe I'll get it for her 2nd or 3rd bday I suppose.
That sounds like a nice present to me. Though for a 3 year old... are 3DSes um.. strong enough and safe enough for toddlers? It might have small parts. And toddlers are pretty rough with things...

And yeah, I wish they had the Super Famicom/Nintendo design on the LL/XL. The Super Famicom is my favourite video game system of all time it's super amazing and exciting to me that they're using the Super Famicom button style. I already like so many things about the new 3DS and want one. But I prefer the LL/XL...

I, literally, just bought a 3DS yesterday.

God damn it.

Trade it back in if need be. You should be able to get a full refund right? Although I'm guessing it's mostly due to Smash which should you wait on the new model, you'll likely have to miss out on. Why do they announce these things so many months in advance (talking bout NA and Europe)?

I can't wait to not be able to buy that white 3DS here in the US.

Because you want to enjoy 3DS gaming for a full year before buying the new hardware when it is released next April?
Well that was an upgrade from the 3DS I bought at launch. Not really worth $200 to upgrade for one year. Had I not upgraded to the XL, I probably would've bought this new one, but as it is it'll probably be a wait for the model AFTER this one for me.
