Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Woah, wait, what?

There are a few things I don't like about it (Micro SD, Micro SD behind the battery cover, and possible splitting of the userbase with the extra buttons) but a lot of things I like about it. I think it's finally time for me to upgrade from the 3DS I bought on release day...

Splitting the fanbase seems like a bad idea, but hopefully this means that the 3DS will have a long lifespan like the DS/DSi generation. Hopefully I won't have to get a new 3DS to play Pokémon, though.

If the 3DS is gonna be around for some years to come and Gen 7 (like Gen 5 on the DS) is also on the 3DS, there's no way in hell that Nintendo will go and make Pokemon New 3DS exclusive, though I definitely see New 3DS exclusive features of some sort.

You probably will if you want the best experience. After all, gen 5 were DSi games. Not exclusive mind you, but they were indeed DSi cards.

Well, there were features that were only for the DSi, but IIRC it was just the camera thing. As long as they aren't completely exclusive to the new 3DS I'm fine missing out out a feature or two.

Nintendo's layout is the correct placement; everybody else is using the backwards design. Sure, it's Nintendo's fault for losing their industry relevance and having the knockoff design become an industry standard, but that doesn't change the fact that Nintendo's design is the one Nintendo should always use.
DS is not that ancient and it's the second best selling game system ever made. Plenty of people are used to Nintendo's layout, and in any case, why can't different companies use different layouts? Sony doesn't care about any supposed "standard", and Nintendo doesn't either.

People wanting the second stick to be full-sized and push down the buttons are CRAAAAAZY. The nub there is gonna be used in about 0.05% of all 3DS software, you want to put something like that in the primary position, and make it harder to reach the face buttons for 99.95% of software? Come on now.

System looks pretty cool but I owned and sold 3 3DS's and 2 Vita's because portables don't amuse me anymore.
Bet it'll sell like hotcakes in Japan, those customizable back-plates look awesome and pretty much all of the changes sound great.

Wonder how that small nub works it looks clunky if it is supposed to be a circle pad.

I still say I'm more salty that in 2015 Nintendo is gonna try and sell me new hardware for $150-$200 with a fucking PICA 200 GPU.

Wiki said:
PICA200 is a graphics processing unit (GPU) for embedded devices designed by Digital Media Professionals Inc. (DMP), a Japanese GPU design company. It was announced at SIGGRAPH 2005, and presented on SIGGRAPH 2006 conference.

Shit is a decade old and they still trying to get me to pay that kind of cash. :|

The Game Boy Color took apart the layers of the game image and give each one a color according to a color palette, unless the game came with one already. You'll need hardware strong enough to emulate original 3DS games to give them a higher screen resolution, or leave them alone (like the original DS games on the 3DS, which look worse unless you play them in 1:1 mode); or they will need to be written for a higher resolution (which considering how sluggish Xenoblade runs on 3DS despite being exclusive to the new 3DS, they would need hardware much stronger for that).

Either way, there is no advantage to doing that, only problems. Their next-gen system will certainly have the higher-resolution screen, but the 3DS will stay a 3DS.

I understand that older 3DS games wont run at a higher resultion. But now the New 3DS is announced games could have been designed with both screen resolutions in mind. Xenoblade was a Wii game so no one expects it to run that good on the 3DS. Other games could have been worked on the showcase the new resolution and take advantage of the better CPU.

Oh well it's not happening anyway, so who cares.

Well, there were features that were only for the DSi, but IIRC it was just the camera thing. As long as they aren't completely exclusive to the new 3DS I'm fine missing out out a feature or two.

There were plenty of exclusive and enhanced games on DSi. Most for download, but some on Card. Why should this be different? Xenoblade is one of them.

I don't own a 3ds. I will now own a 3ds.

Is it true that the 3ds makes your eyes bleed? That's the one thing that freaked me out about getting it. How is the 3d better here?

I hate the colored buttons, the dinky analog, the name (just like NSMB), and that I bought 3 3DSs which now can't play whatever games this was made for :(

Not a worthwhile update and I'm definitely going to keep this in consideration when skipping out on the true successor (along with the immediate price drop)

Are the faceplates not usable on the XL? Come on..

not sure if serious but the 3D is harmless. the new 3DS has better viewing angles.

Was hoping for LED at least.

Guess Nintendo doesn't feel like using 1995 technology just yet. Maybe in another 10 years.

ugh
there's no such thing as an LED display, unless you're talking about the big jumbotron screens at sports stadiums or something

LED tvs are just LCD panels with led backlighting

This is beyond lame. The 3ds does NOT have a strong enough library for them to start utilizing new hardware as an "upgrade".

A bit off topic: I always thought that gameboy color was a different generation than gameboy. As far as I remember you could play pokemon crystal only on GBC so nintendo might do something similar.

I hope they fixed the screen scratching issue.
Me too. I got a Hori protector on my 3DS XL, put it away without a scratch for a month or two, opened it up and boom, there's a small one on the protector. It was way worse on the launch model though.
They did the same thing with the DS (remember the DSi?). This is nothing new for Nintendo. And frankly I'm guessing they want to keep momentum for the 3DS going for a few more years so they can release both their next handheld and home console at the same time.

I will say is that Nintendo could use some work with their naming conventions. Is New Nintendo 3DS really the best they could come up with?
Except the DSi didn't have any major exclusives like the New 3DS, did it? Aside from DSi Ware of course.

Ok. Here is my opinion right now about Nintendo and this "new" machine.

I love Nintendo. I am a Wii U owner. We got also two Wii in the house, a 3DS, and a DSi. But one thing i think Nintendo is atm not doing right is to revolutionize the handheld industry. People, do you realise that since 2004, that about 10 years, the only kind of handheld system have give us is the same dual screen console? I think its another attemp to re-milk they handheld. Im tired of it Nintendo, seriously. Give us something new.

Nintendo, people are going toward tablets to game, why not make your own tablet like console? You know, something like an ipad mini, having the screen move up, so you could put a joystick and 4 button at the bottom, and make it a bit curved in the bottom back, so you could put 2 or 4 trigger on the back of the ipad. During my free time, i have tough about a concept of a tablet like console. It was what i was expecting. But this other attempt of maybe the same 3DS over and over, with the same specs. Cmon.

Wait what the hell this is an actual system upgrade that they're developing exclusive games for? Holy shit it's like they've learned absolutely nothing from the Wii/Wii U debacle.

I actually really like this announcement. I don't think developers will switch over to this anytime soon. they'll probably try to cater towards both versions of handhelds. I think Xenoblade is just an incentive to upgrade at this point.

Wireless backup Dock!

OT: Also, Tumbledrop is awesome, but update it some time will ya?
Forgive me if I don't massively trust Nintendo's plan for wireless backup.

Thanks :3 I'm hoping to do a Tumbledrop 2 in the future, but life has been busy.

I want it now but I'm confused. They already got me buying a useless DSi after upgrading my fat to a lite NDS

smells like a wrong decision:

-confusing naming, again... Wii > Wii U for a new system... new 3DS for a slight update which is not supposed to be a new console, but..
-finally a 2nd stick which is still only optional on the previous iteration
-additional shoulder buttons?
-NFC
-faster CPU
(-other hardware upgrades, battery, better 3D, dimming, tracking...)

so it's not a new system but it already has been confirmed that the owners of the previous generations ( 3DS and 3DSXL) won't be able to play some new games (xenoblades and probably others)

lol?

Can't wait to buy that metallic blue one (if it shows up here in the US).

Still have my original 3DS and my XL is my daily driver so this will become my main once it comes to the NA.

Good thing it's (hopefully) coming out next year to give my wallet a break from this coming fall.

I hate that the New 3DS LL doesn't have the Super Famicom buttons

It kinda does, although it's the letters that are colored not the buttons themselves. Probably looks better against a dark backdrop.

I have a feeling the inevitable ice white LL will have famicom buttons.

So that pricing, that looks pretty cheap...

A quick conversion puts the New 3DS LL at around $180USD? The standard at $154USD or am I missing something?

That's a great price.

Because making a tablet would suddenly revolutionise things?
