Ooh! I hope there's a villager skin as cute as that one :o

That dog looks like it escaped from Rude Dog and the Dweebs or something :s

I admit...mk8 made me finally learn all the koopalings names. Before I only remembered, Ludwig, roy, morton, wendy. Got lemmy, larry, and iggy confused so much.
MK8 made me learn the names even though I don't have the game yet. I just wanted to know which koopaling people were talking about.

Before that I only knew Wendy.

Eh, I think Doc is one of the better choices for clones because it gives the Dr. Mario series a representation, which I think it deserves.

Dark Pit is debatable, and I'd pick Dixie for a last minute clone (just replace the tail attacks and Up B lol) over him. Though I actually quite enjoy Diddy a lot whereas Pit's moveset never gelled with me, so if Dark Pit fixes my little problems with Pit's moveset the same way as Doc does for Mario's then that's completely fine with me.

Ludwig is the Koopaling everyone should know, he gets the one unique boss fight in SMW and then graduates to being the guardian of the pre Bowser world in the NSMB series, clearly he's the favourite.

I'm not really disappointed by Dr. Mario and Dark Pit being cheap clones, as much as I'm disappointed that they could've had far more interesting cheap clones, like Impa.

Exactly, I'm a pretty cool with clones, I just think they could've cloned better.
Brittany with Rock Pikmin instead of Purple among other small shifts would've been neato, well at least the Alph alt might be a thing.

Tbf Mario and pokemon are Nintendo two biggest franchises and up until recently Zelda really didn't have any real legit new potential newcomers. Impa Just kinda became cool lately.

Impa would be a really legit newcomer but Ghirahim was always kind of second-rate. I can totally understand why Zelda doesn't have any newcomers.

It's kind of the same with DK, honestly. Retro Studios has been careful to kind of keep it down with reintroducing the whole excessive Kong family; DKCR only had DK, Diddy and Cranky so it's unsurprising that Smash is keeping it to just that.

Though you know Doc's inclusion opens up the possibility of getting a second Wario rep with Wario Land Wario (that's gonna be the name btw) with a brawler/grappler style moveset since Sakurai doesn't mind having the same character getting two playable slots with a different costume.

This way both Brawl Wario main/Warioware fans who are completely happy with his moveset (me) AND the Wario Land fans (me) are happy! Win-win.

10/10 now

This is too good. I only played 12 or so hours of the game and I still adore this. The voice acting is that horrendous/amazing.

Just disregard that thread. Trust me, most passionate Smash fans are great to talk to. I don't play Smash tournaments but I play Smash a lot and have a few friends who do play regional and national tournaments. The great thing about Smash fans is that when you talk to them about Smash they have a smile on their face the whole time. Unlike that thread, it's actually fun to discuss the mechanics of the game and the characters.

I'm sure you're right, but unfortunately that has not been my experience. Literally, most of the passionate Smash fans I've ever talked to either in person or online have been like the people in that thread. I wish that wasn't true.

You should really meet people like D1, Mang0, Scar, or anyone like them in-person. They're more representative of the average competitive Smasher. In fact, D1 and them are at PAX -- you should find them.

You should've also gone to the panel they had last night about the community. :P

But yeah you should really disregard that thread -- there's some people in there that are being logical but one or two are being rather unreasonable and... I never really see those around anywhere (notably Deckard Cain, who is probably the worst ever I've seen lol).

To be fair, I have met a handful of REALLY nice people in the community; Andre and I met a whole group of them at E3, actually, but I'm not sure who they were by name. They seemed to be fairly high-profile, though. Like I said, I do think it's a case of a vocal group of dicks ruining it for everyone else, but in this case they really are ruining it for everyone else because a lot of people see that whole community as completely toxic, myself included. When the vast majority of your exposure to a community continues to be almost completely negative year after year, that'll happen. :/

Wait what happened? What'd they do/say?

Just check the thread... it'll be faster than me explaining it to you!

Pretty much how I feel lol.

It gives me comfort to know that, besides people like Deckard Cain, Smash Bros 4 is still gonna sell pretty damn good (as far as Wii U games go), I (and A LOT of other people) will have tons of fun with it, and it will get pretty great reviews. Meanwhile, The "Deckard Cain"s out there will keep screaming at clouds saying how Sakurai and everybody who enjoys the game are delusional.

Yep, I couldn't have said it better myself. Generally I want everyone who plays Smash to be happy if possible - I want everyone to have their favorite characters, franchises, and stages represented, and I don't want people to be let down by a new Smash game. The only people I do not feel this way about is the (vocal/loudest people in the) competitive community, because everyone knows all they want is Melee 2 (or something closer to it than a compromise between Melee and Brawl) and they've made the rest of our lives miserable over the course of their complaining and moaning about how much better than Sakurai they'd be at Sakurai's job, etc., etc. It just gets tiresome and obnoxious after awhile, so I can't help but smile inwardly with glee when Sakurai makes some statement or something mechanics-related comes out about Smash 4 that pisses those people off.

It's shame, because I like watching competitive Smash and I like a lot of the pro players, but I can stand talking to the community about it.

Yeah, this. Even though I don't enjoy it myself, watching high-level Melee and Brawl play can be exhilarating!

The Melee community is extremely rough around the edges. The way that community was brought up has bred a lot of irrational people. You won't find many among the top level players, but the bottom dwellers can be utterly unbearable. Those kinds of people are going to become instinct after Smash 4 has been out for a while because it's going to unite the best of what the community has to offer and leave the rest in the dust. Look to the people Nintendo invited to the Smash invitational if you want a good example of the competitive community. Check out people like RelaxAlax, Mew2King, Toronto Joe, GimR, CT_Chibo, Keitaro...

Do you really think they'll become extinct? All I see happening with Smash 4 in terms of the competitive community is that once it comes out, all the "Melee >>>> Brawl" arguments and discussions are going to become "Melee >>>> Smash 4" discussions. It's painfully clear that they're going to push back against Nintendo's efforts to give Smash 4 a place at events like Evo and are just going to keep championing Melee like it's the only good Smash game out there. The reactions by many people in the community post-E3 and SDCC all but confirm this; many of them have already resigned themselves to the "fact" that Smash 4 is already crap compared to Melee, and might be even "more crap" than Brawl. It's silly, but that's what these people do.

I know it's not what ALL of them do - I know a few really high-level competitive players either said it was too early to see how viable Smash 4 is competitively or that they had confidence it would find a place in the competitive community - but the overall reaction from the Melee community toward Smash 4 has been overwhelmingly negative... simply because it's not Melee 2 and/or because it's closer to Brawl than Melee.

Also, I've never met Mew2King myself but I've heard only horrible things...

This is still the greatest gaming-related thing I've seen in, like, the last ten years. Maybe more.

well I guess it's reasonable to disregard an entire "horrible" community because of two trolls in a neogaf thread

Except it's not because of two trolls in a NeoGAF thread. It's because 99% of my interactions with the competitive Melee community over the last several years have been with people exactly like the trolls in that thread. They are, sadly, not the exception. They might not be the rule either, but it's not like people in the community with their horrible attitudes are rare or anything.

This picture will make you cry.

Oh man. That's harsh.

this is the case for every single "serious video game community."

my theory is that when people dedicate all their time getting to "high level" gameplay for any game, they don't spend enough time dealing with people in person. this leads to the rampant racism, misogyny, etc you see in "pro" gaming.

even when i was excellent at sf, i ignored all pros/youtubes/threads about that stuff. when it comes to games, fun is always more important than being the best.

This is true. Nearly every "serious" video game community is pretty awful for the reason you stated, and I might just feel more strongly about it with regard to the competitive Smash community because I'm exposed to it more.

I'm going to miss the Codec calls. :(

You said it. The Codec calls are going to be the one thing I miss about Snake more than anything else, by far. I would have loved to hear his conversations about Mega Man, Palutena, Rosalina, Greninja... damn. :(

The second Wario rep Doctor Mario leads to is Doctor Wario, I'm sure you remember the unlockable in the original Wario Ware, failing that Doctor Luigi.

I would actually take a specifically Wario Land Wario though, playing some of Brawl earlier and immediately thought it strange that Wario's throws are kind of average seeing as strong throws are kind of his thing even in the likes of SM64 DS.

It'd be amazing to see Wario Land Wario with his silly SML3: WL power-ups. Oh, and his WL2 power-ups.

He could be Toon Link-style, a la Wario Land: Shake It.

Aren't the Wario games developers also the ones that developed Dr. Mario?

I'm sure it was for balancing purposes considering he's a really defensive character by design that already has really strong attacks though only a few of them. His grab game is mostly good for follow ups or for shenanigans with the tires, though his FThrow is a really good one for KOing.

Ganondorf clone? :p

Going clone status thats the only thing I can think of.

Fact

Little Mac should replace the codecs, with Doc Louis telling Mac about his opponents

That would actually be a cool idea to go agains't the already established Kid Icarus convos that everyone wants. Though does Little Mac even talk? Doc would have to do all the work there along with whoever comes in to support.

I'd be sad if an original Wario Land character didn't get in, but I'd be happy enough if we got something to represent Wario Land. Standard B would be his Shoulder Charge, he could have multiple jumps where he transforms into a Vampire Bat, and his Down B could be his ground slam technique.

I hate to admit it but most of my real life interactions with the melee community goes kind of like this

I'm going to miss the Codec calls. :(

I still hope that we would get one in Kid Icarus' stage.

Same here, Heath! I love that it has this plastic look to instead of having obvious fur. I think that's what sticks out to the most, which ends up making it look so damn good. The in-game model for Duck Hunt will surely be one of the most gorgeous characters in the game and I cannot wait to see them.

I'm surprised that they honestly didn't give him a name. More people figure that he'd be alone, pulling out all types of references made from his game and more. So, having the duck by his side is a very nice and welcoming surprise.

I'm actually very happy on the part of Duck Hunt being a quadrupedal, it makes him more unique then he already is. Especially with all the great attention to detail that was given from back of the old sprite. I really cannot wait to see what alternate colors will be given to Duck Hunt. There are so many possibilities on actual patterns for dogs. :)

I have to agree, there is nothing more that will top this look for Duck Hunt, it's just too perfect. This render will be looked at, as one of the greatest, so respect for the creation of bring back a retro character to life. :3

This is why I have no doubts about this being fake. Sakurai really wanted to have Nintendogs become a playable character, along with Villager. But as we see now in Smash 4.. Villager is in the game! Nintendog is an AT again, sense nobody wants to beat up on such a realistic puppy/dog. What's the next best thing? The dog from Duck Hunt! Which can still go with his intentions and ideas, while giving off that slapstick humor added in with the duck. Getting a two for one, along with another retro character.

The thing that makes me appreciate it even more? Is the fact that we get have our Pseudo-Banjo & Kazooie in the game. Haha.

Hmm. The dog could be laying down in sadness, as the duck claps with it's wings. Which would make sense. XP

SKKcYyM.jpg

Haha, Pseudo-Banjo and Kazooie.

i like skyward sword's Impa design. She looks so cool, I want her in the game just cause of her design :3 (not more than I want mewtwo tho, there is no one i want more than mewtwo... >:o )

Honestly, I do, too. I love everything about the way she looks in SS, and I would be happy to see her in Smash--just not at the expense of, say, Lucas. ;)

I think that'd be fine. Little Mac's a man of few words, and they could do a lot of humour with Doc by himself.

Honest question:

I see a lot of people REALLY lamenting the possible loss of the Ice Climbers (more than Wolf and even Lucas). While I agree with that and are also lamenting their loss should that actually happen, how many of you are sad about it because you actually main them and not sad just because it doesn't "feel" like Smash without them, even if you never play them? Just curious.

For me, I fully admit to not playing them all THAT often; I'm decent with them in Brawl, but they're definitely not anywhere close to my main or secondaries, and they're probably a distant third-stringer for me. As for Melee, I wasn't very good with them at all there. So for me, it's more about the overall feeling that it just doesn't feel like a proper Smash without them, after having had them in Melee and Brawl.

What say you all?

Man, I've never seen Impa in-game in Skyward Sword. She looks AWESOME. I almost want her as much as Tingle! (almost being a keyword. They'd be two great additions for Smash 5!)

Mario is the main franchise for Nintendo so I'm not too fussed by it having more reps than anything else plus I'm a big fan, as far as the icons go I only consider Yoshi to be part of that mainline bunch, Wario I feel is very much his own thing and in two series at that.

Even so while Bowser Jr looks to be a character right up my alley and Rosalina pulls an interesting moveset based upon the Galaxy stuff Mario ain't touching I would've preferred fleshing out other series that bit more first before going for these two newcomers, but then again I'm just one of those salty DK and Metroid guys, grumble.

Tbf Mario and pokemon are Nintendo two biggest franchises and up until recently Zelda really didn't have any real legit new potential newcomers. Impa Just kinda became cool lately.

for the record I have no problem with Mario and Pokemon having a lot of reps, especially pokemon, a series with more than 700 characters, you could take any character from that series and make it a unique and fun fighter . Nor do I have an issue with Bowser Jr or Rosalina(I actually like Bowser Jr :D), Mario can have many reps as well cause like mik said, mario is their main series. But Doctor Mario? come on, if you were going to make another clone might as well give the rep to another franchise. Its not like mario is short on reps or anything.

all im saying is that a lot of ppl all over the web(including here) bitch about pokemon having too many reps but no body calls mario out on this. hell, SUPPOSEDLY pokemon is actually losing a rep this time around.
(mewtwo shall return with a better moveset. Believe)

They're a part of smash for me even though I don't play as them at all.
It's odd seeing a character go especially one that's not a clone.
Though those character losses are just as bad.

Its because NOA isn't printing the game anymore. It feels weird to completely miss out on a Kirby game. :(

You have to find a way to get this game. It's amazing. I got it at Gamestop with some trade-ins and various deals. It was pricey but seriously, it's such a great game and so packed with content that it's an absolutely must-play. If you liked Triple Deluxe, it's very similar.

Though you know Doc's inclusion opens up the possibility of getting a second Wario rep with Wario Land Wario (that's gonna be the name btw) with a brawler/grappler style moveset since Sakurai doesn't mind having the same character getting two playable slots with a different costume.

Honestly, i'd rather take Chorus Kids that's from a similar universe over another Wario of all things to be honest...

Also, for everyone downloading the game like me at midnight on Oct. 3rd, who's down for a couple rounds online?

I'm not lamenting their loss, per se, if they end up not being in there, but any feeling of discontent about it would definitely be related to Melee-era nostalgia and not much else. They just made for a cool rep. (No pun intended!)

They were one of my favorite Melee characters and I still enjoyed using them in Brawl.
It just wouldn't really be the same without them.

Ice Climbers are like the one character that I actually never really liked using, and one that I NEVER liked fighting against. In a sense they always felt really unpolished to me compared to the rest in both Melee and Brawl. Losing Lucas and especially Snake hurts me more. (hah)

Though it still feels weird not seeing them. I say if a character manages to be in at least two Smash games then they shouldn't be cut, but alas.
