I've never played a Persona game before. Can some explain it to me?
I know it's based around high school and is an rpg?
The best way I can put it is if you're a serious jrpg fan who enjoys strong character development, that enjoys something that gives you a nice break or change of pace every now and then from the types of heavy grinding that you can often times experience in hardcore jrpgs, and you're also the kind of person that appreciates a creative, very modern and pop culture influenced take on world exploration and story progression, then these games are for you.
And no worries about depth to the gameplay as a result of all this other stuff. It has plenty of depth, and tons of challenge. Very few games do a better, more convincing job of giving you the impression that you've actually been transported into the world in which you're playing than the Persona games have done. You actually feel like the characters in the game are your friends. You actually feel compelled to go check on this or that character to make sure everything is cool. And you'd think that due to the technical limitations of the platforms that these games have been released on that they somehow suffer in some fashion. They don't. They're among the most beautifully imagined and well presented games I've played.
They're not just among the absolute best JRPGs you can find today, from arguably the strongest jrpg franchise currently in existence today, they're simply put some of the best JRPG games ever made. I think they hold up and stand on even footing with the best the genre has ever seen. That's the reason to be excited about Persona 5. And if you haven't ever played the series, it's precisely why the previous games are worth trying. I feel either Persona 3 or 4 are great entry points for someone new to the series, but each and every game can be enjoyed just as well without having experienced the others. It's just that the quality of 3 and 4 are so known to most by now that we can, with full confidence, sing their praises.
