Persona 5 also launching on PS4, releasing 2015 ["waifu"/"husbando" crap = ban]

Just wondering, why not actually give it a shot? Zaniness doesn't entirely mean a bad thing.

I'm not saying it's bad, it just doesn't appeal to me in general. I've always liked the more serious in tone JRPG's (Final Fantasy 12, Vagrant Story) rather than the sillier/anime fan service kind of things.

I think the market in general is lacking these kinds of game from Japan recently, and it would be nice to see at least an attempt at it.

I've actually never played a Persona game to completion, just watched large bits of it from Giant Bomb and I was always put off by the incredibly over the top nature of everything, including the monster design - shooting themselves in the head kind of deal.

With this new trailer and sequel though, I see a ton of potential to be just a legitimately great story with no strings attached. I could be getting my hopes up for nothing, but it would be nice if there was a JRPG on the market targeted at adults.

Er, sounds like you want a Shin Megami Tensei game, rather than the Persona series. Look up Nocturne or Strange Journey, maybe Digital Devil Saga would be a good fit.

Ah, I see. Yeah, they could just pull that again and not show up in this game too, possibly.
However P4 occured in a remote town, disguised as a serial killing with all the actions contained within the TV world.

This is set in a big, crowded city with someone seemingly "awakens" in broad daylight.

I wouldn't actually say persona games are focused on fan service, although I could see why you would think so with how the waifu talk show up in these types of threads. There is fan service in the game, but the stuff that's there is no worse than Mass Effect focusing on Miranda's ass in every conversation you have with her.

Well, I think you are largely talking about Persona 3 here :l. I mean, the game did have a very strong story and really well done characters but it was very over the top at times (the Evokers, the end-of-the-world storyline, ect). Persona 4 tones stuff down a lot, with no crazy way to summon the Persona's, the main story being much more grounded (it is based on a murder case as its base and just grows from there), characters having a stronger role in both S. Links and story and psychological factors being played with (the visuals designs of the dungeons, the characters 'shadow' selves, ect).

Give P4G a shot if you have a Vita or P4 PS2 Classic a shot if you have a PS3; you might really love the story :D.

For me, I really hope characters from P4 and P3 make an apperance, even if it is just in Soical Links.

Really doubt the Shadow Operatives would ignore a new threat...

Thanks, will do! I'll be honest, I'm not hugely familiar with either series. I have a 3DS so maybe I'll just check out the latest one for that.

SMT games tend to be more serious, with the recent 3DS one being the best example. Still, this is a series that is just as much dating sim/relationship builder with your teammates as it is a jrpg. P4 tackled some mature issues in a relatively cartoonish way, and also did something that would have been a real eye opener if they hadn't gone back on the decision like 4 minutes later.

Again if you haven't, play Catherine from Atlus (ps3/360). It's very mature in its topic and characters.

If any characters pop up from past games in P5, it will be a Shadow Ops member showing up during a few story scenes (maybe Mistru and Aigis?) and/or Sho being a secret boss fight/party member/S. Link (Arena Ultramax really implies he will show up again in the future).

I could see Yu pop up too (he lives in a city-themed area before his adventure in Inaba, so him showing up latter in the game to assist P5 MC or just be a NPC is possible).

Dunno if this has been talked about, but what sort of changes would you folks like to see with Social Links?

I think the biggest necessity would be to explore same sex romantic relationships. Though I identify as heterosexual, I feel the addition would be wonderful and, if written well, could be quite poignant.

Another thing more closely related to having with S.Links is to have enough free time to complete them. Apparently Golden makes dealing with S.Links easier by allowing the player to play through months skipped in P4 Vanilla. However, I don't know how much easier it makes getting max S.Links. I personally needed a guide to pull it off in P4 Vanilla.
I wouldn't mind if the S.link activities were more interactive. Like for instance have the basketball club let you shoot some hoops or the music club be a rhythm game.

Yeah, something more in line with Catherine would be what I guess I'm hoping for, minus the crazy weird Japan/demon stuff at the end and the shameless box art.

Having Troy Baker in the cast doesn't hurt. :)

Since Yu already has a determined personality from Arena, it would be cool to see him be a party member. :D

I'm not familiar with SMTIV as it hasn't released here yet, but yeah the mainline series in general has a more mature tone, less fanservice, adult lead characters, etc. They also tend to favor atmosphere and abstract themes rather than direct storytelling (character did X! plot twist!) if you like that sort of thing. Digital Devil Saga has good story and atmosphere (it's not contemporary Japan like Persona) though, my favorite non-Persona title.

Yeah the box art had me extremely wary about playing the game at first, but then it ended up being great with its story and characters. At least assuming you went with Katherine. If not you're just wrong. I kid of course.

Maybe in the opining of the game the MC will encounter him fighting off waves of Shadows (if they open the game up with stuff going bad from the start) while helping out the MC use his Persona (him filling the role of Teddie/Rise for the first half hour of the game during battles). It would be a nice throw back to people who loved Persona 4 :).

I'd certainly be open to this, but I can't help but feel that people would react the same way to that as they would blitzball or the squatting minigame in FF7.

That sounds perfect to me! I will absolutely look into it some more.

Appreciate the response.

Yu for party member! Two wild cards = moar swag!

Edit: what if Harry potter runs into shadow operatives in the city as the shadow outbreak occurs? What if they recruit him into the operatives once he displays an awakening? Then your party is full of other new recruits. So new characters and old characters calling the shots.

If P4 was "incredibly over the top" to you then you aren't going to like Persona. Go play something boring instead.

I'd like dialog choices in social links to make them more interactive as opposed to being simply "go talk to this character"

Maybe different outcomes or situations that can be failed would be nice.

I think the thing I want improved most in P5 is for the world and Personas/Shadows to look more lively. I'm playing SMT3 right now and I'm really impressed by the demon animations and the visuals of the world. Seeing Forneus swimming around in the hospital looked much more interesting than anything in P3 or 4 and the demons are a lot more lively in battle. Of course you barely see the Personas in 3 and 4 but the Shadow animations are so dull. The games look really static in comparison so if they could change that with 5 it'd be awesome.

If by boring you mean something with grounded characters, reasonably well thought out story lines that don't spiral into the typical and eye roll worthy trope of defeating evil through the power of friendship, then yes sign me up.

JRPG's with the production values and budget of something like Catherine or the Persona games aren't exactly a dime a dozen. That's part of the appeal to me, sue me for wanting this to be a bit more transcendent to all audiences rather than just catering to the people who enjoy the anime fan service kind of tripe.

Well they are exactly that, dialogue choices in social links have an effect, especially in P3 where you can "fail" an encounter and have a reversed relationship. Unless I'm misunderstanding your question.

Last part's kind of uncalled for, to each their own.

And this also isn't Persona. If even slightly touching on the importance of bonds and relationships in the struggle for a reason to survive or pursuit of the truth make P3 and P4 cliché, then I must love cliché games because The Last of Us and Persona 4 Golden are two of my favourite games of all time.

Disappointing that it seems like it has been delayed....probably looking at a Q2-Q3 2015 release in the west now?

Still, another incentive to push me to finally buy a PS4.

What do you guys think the thing was that reflected on the MC's glasses near the end?

Also, anyone know what the insignia on his shirt may be?

I read what you posted about people shooting themselves in the head in a Persona game. That's 3. It's a good game, but I do agree with your sentiment.

I'd say try out 4. It's far more low key, better written, a ton more charming with its characters, and P4/P4G are the best made of the bunch.

Welllllll, while I don't want to put it roughly, I am gonna be real about this-- Persona 5 is probably going to have outland-ish, strange occurrences in it, and a lot of "anime" slice-of-life tension-breaking scenes to balance it out. There'll be darkly comedic-looking monsters and Personas, the cast will probably have defining character traits and out-standing designs, a lot of things to make it pop out at the audience. No matter who hopes it will be, Persona 5 would never be too far in the depths of realism, since It's kind of a necessity of the series, really.

So, Vire, I'd say if you really wanted to check Persona out, I'd suggest probably looking into previous titles with more than a glancing view, to see if you can bare or got a taste for some of the stuff possible in it. There's a lot of great parts to Persona, dealing with psychological and sociological themes, realistic circumstances and issues and the like, but it also and almost inevitably will have more zanier breaks from reality or contrastingly light-hearted moments to it.

It's funny, I've seen the ending to Persona 4, but just for shits and giggles here's the synopsis of part of the ending on Wikipedia:

The group tracks Izanami down within the TV world and battle her, but is at first unable to win; the defeated protagonist is given strength by the bonds he has forged with those around him, and with this power awakens a new Persona—Izanagi-no-Okami—which he uses to defeat Izanami. In doing so, the fog in each world is lifted, and the TV world is restored to its original form.

It's kinda exactly that.

EDIT: Added spoiler tag, apologies! Figured games from 2008 were in the clear.

I played P4:G before P3P, so maybe I just missed it... Did anyone from P3 show up in P4?

That's only glancing at a synposis though.
It makes sense that in a world that is shaped by human thoughts, that the collective wish for lies rather than truth takes on a certain form, and that your relationships with people help forge facets of your personality and help you pierce through lies better after you've done exactly that for them. Same way it makes sense that in P3, the relationships you form with other people give you a reason to live. The MC is willing to give his life to protect them. It's the same as The Last of Us on that front.

Spoiler tag that ending dude, there's some people going in fresh to the games. It's not as cornball as it sounds either (but P3 was tbh).

A few minor characters, but there's no major plot links until Arena.

I know this probably isn't a popular response, but I really hope they tone down the zaniness and fan service stuff and make a respectable, mature story.

The trailer got my interest piqued at least.

The stories of the last two entries are respectable. Despite not being what you are calling 'mature'. There's far more to storytelling than the pursuit of abject realism. Broaden your horizons a little..or at least be more open-minded, for your own sake.

I also thought that the MC and the characters were going to be college students. I guess they're still doing high school

yea i feel the same way actually, the mc is looking more mature and refined. maybe it'll be a super strict & prestigious prep school for the BEST STUDENTS

That last scene with the
power of friendship
stuff is actually the very limit to how corny the plot gets. And honestly, once you've made it there, everything else was decent enough to make it ignorable.
