Probably been answered a ton of times, but how much longer do you folks think my 2500k will last? I know it's going to be fine for at least a year, but I'm looking to try and get at least a year and a half out of it after I replace my 560Ti with something a tad shinier.

Is it overclocked? If not, do it. You should last a couple years with it so go ahead and upgrade that GPU if you want.

Hey friendos, is the thermal paste that comes with the 4690k good enough for OCing? Or should I buy some Arctic Silver or whatever?

I've personally owned some of these mice and I have to say that the Logitech G502 is my favourite yet if anyone's looking for a recommendation.

Guys is this a big enough case to put a r9 270x inside?

GT_B-3.jpg

293mm is plenty of room for a 270x. I think 270's are no longer than 10 inches

I've got an MSI Twin Frozr 770GTX 2GB overclock model.

Basically, to keep things short, DX11 mode in games would crash my system (BSOD) after a short period of time. Took a while to pinpoint this. I didn't realize furmark was an openGL benchmark, and it would run without issue. So when temps got high, DX11 mode (or at least, the features of) would cause crashes. Unigine Heaven benchmark sealed the deal on this as it has a nice easy way to switch DX9/11.

But that leads to the second thing. Temperatures.
Is it normal that a video card would not ramp up fan speed beyond 50% even at 80+ degrees? I downloaded afterburner (thanks OP) and realized that my GPU fans just don't work hard enough. I manually cranked the fans to 100% and no more crashes. 80+ temps have now gone down to 63.
I'm going to create a profile to balance out the fan speed and temp curve.

So, does my video card just have a crappy temperature/fan speed curve?

I'm not sure about your card specifically, might be worth having a google for specific problems, but that was the case with my previous graphics card 4870x2. Turns out it had shitloads of dust caked on one of the heatsinks (design fault of the fans or something).

Hey guys, I have an NZXT source mid-tower case and am looking to upgrade from a 750ti to a 770. Would a 10.5" card fit in the case? It looks like it, I'm just asking if anybody has experience with large cards in the case, and if there are any issues that could pop up.

I trust Intel over the ones you posted.

If you look at the data you will see Intel Samsung and Crucial are insanely close in terms of reliability. The only time Intel is the choice for SSD is if you want an enterprise SSD. There is no point in discussing speeds.

Ill double check and see if you can find out whete you've seen this before

If you are running Devils Canyon chips then it's highly likely you need to update the BIOS. The boards shipped with premature BIOS.

Otherwise I'd reset the CMOS and then proceed to update the bios if that doesn't help.

Components:

Intel Core I7 4790K
EVGA Mini-ITX CPU Cooler
ASUS Z97I-Plus
16GB Crucial Ballistic DDR3 (1600)
ASUS R9 290X w/4gb of DDR5
LG Blu-ray Drive/Re-writer
Seagate 2TB Hybrid Drive
Corsair Obsidian Mini-ITX Case - 250D
Corsair 750w PSU (CXM)

All in all, this ran me about $1350.00, largely because I found an open box R9 290X for $400.00(!!!!). Also, because Microcenter gave me bundling discounts on the CPU, Processor and Video Card (the latter of which I thought wouldn't qualify, but it did!).

Side note: Probably one of the most challenging builds I've ever done. Numerous components turned out to be faulty (all of them Corsair--wtf), and the wiring was a pain in the ass, even though the Obsidian is a very thoughtful case.

I need this case. That is so slick looking.

I'm in the market for a new monitor but not ready to upgrade my rig so everything runs at 4k. What is tops in the 1080p range right now? I'm using a 22inch screen and it is starting to have some issues with lines appearing. I'm willing to spend up to 400 or so.

Was that from before or after OCZ was purchased by Toshiba and started getting a steady supply of (supposedly)quality NAND?

Not sure actually, albeit the reliability is decent on all SSDs, so then I just go for performance to price ratio, and MX100 wins usually.

Use windows key + p and set the output to duplicate?

Well, it's working perfectly with a customer fan profile in afterburner. Wasn't a dust issue as it's a new build. Must just be a firmware issue that didn't activate high enough speeds.

If it happens again I'll take the cmos battery out

I've been trying to get a read on their quality since the buyout.

One of the reasons they went under to start with was that they had trouble getting NAND and their suppliers were constantly changing so quality was all over the place. Toshiba bought them and left them largely unaltered other than now having a steady supply of Toshiba NAND and functioning as a subsidiary.

Chigg's brilliant pics of his Mini-ITX build have me contemplating one again...for someone with a soft spot for the NZXT H440, are there any similarly sleek (white) Mini-ITX cases that anyone could recommend? Would like to look into this further.

Guys any difference between a r9 270x vs a r9 270?, and how is the jump from a single 7770.

I ask because i dont want to buy a new power supply (i have one with a single connector, so i think i can connect a r9 270 but not a 270x).

edit: or should i wait and get a gtx 760? mhhh..

Just to make sure I'm not doing something stupid, I'll just check in here with what I'm getting for my next PC:

Buying:
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl Case ($71.99 NCIX US)
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz ($234.67 Amazon)
SSD Storage: Crucial MX100 512GB SSD ($209.99 Amazon)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X 16GB SDRAM DDR3 RAM 1600 ($148.50 Newegg) (promo code EMCPBHB35)
CPU Cooling: Noctura NH-U14S ($59.99 NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme6 Z97 Motherboard ($164.99 Newegg) ($149.99 after mail in rebate)
NCIX US Shipping: $4.99

Total: $895.12 ($880.12 after mail in rebate)

Reusing:
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 2GB (while waiting for GTX 800 series)
HDD Storage: WD Green 2TB
Power Supply: Corsair RM 750 Watt
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX

I assume everything will fit together. I'm not quite sure how to tell if the case can fit any graphics card or cpu heatsink I might throw into it.

Good build. The GPU will be fine in a mid tower. The CPU Cooler I'm not too sure about. Those Noctura coolers are fucking gigantic. Might want to go with a Full Tower. (or Mid Tower that's confirmed to fit with that cooler)

Thanks.

On your advice, I did just double check, and found people saying the max heatsink height for that case is 170mm and this heatsink is 150mm, so I think that should leave enough space, unless its advisable to have more extra space than that.

Guys, quick question. R9 290 or gtx 780? Which will last longer and which performs better? I'm concerned about the vram on the 780 because it reminds me so much of the 1.5gb 580's. I'm currently leaning towards team red only because of the unacceptable amount of vram on the 780. Rumors are suggesting that the 880/980 will have 4gb. Anyone know when that card is supposed to launch and any rumored specs? Thanks.

Something like this?

Instead of the hybrid you could spend the same amount on a 120GB SSD and buy a normal HDD for storage. 1TBs are going for around $50.

I played some more and came up with this...
That $1,400 one is a bit out of his price range, but this one looked pretty good:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($234.66 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($124.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($72.00 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive ($77.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 290 4GB DirectCU II Video Card ($409.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: NZXT Source 210 Window ATX Mid Tower Case ($46.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Thermaltake SMART 750W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32/64-bit) ($94.99 @ B&H)
Monitor: Asus VN248H-P 23.8" Monitor ($134.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $1271.57

It would allow him to play games like Dota 2 and StarCraft 2 and 1080p/60 on Ultra settings? Will those parts last a while before needing to be upgraded?

Thanks for all the help!
