Destiny review copies being sent out one day before release, impacting review dates

Any outlet willing to review online experience prior to release isn't worth a reader's time. I'd even call them dishonest.

Guess my money won't be ready at launch either.

Seriously though, for some reason I feel like I need to wait a week or two on this one just to see what people are saying about the amount of content.
That's what I'd bet on. I can't see this game having abundant content.

Ruh roh. This isn't exactly the best sign...

I will hold off on buying this until reviews start coming in post-release. I really enjoyed the moment to moment gameplay in the alpha and beta (it's like Halo with magic!), but there's still a lot that I'm skeptical about, and the fact they aren't sending out review copies until the day before is a red flag to me.

They wouldn't have let basically anybody who wanted to play the game do so at two different occasions already if they didn't have confidence in what they were making.

Sure, but everyone also goes in with the expectation that it's a beta, and that the content being limited is fine, or any issues would be fixed by release.

I think Bungie has confidence in the moment to moment shooting gameplay, as it's really their specialty. The game feels extremely similar to Halo gunplay after all. However, the big question has been how much content is there, and how have things improved from the beta?

Bungie said servers will be live as soon as its 12AM somewhere in the world. While the servers are offline there is still a SP component that can be played until you can do MP / Co-Op related stuff.
You can't. Single player still needs the servers. It's a permanently online game.

I think this is probably an exception due to the hype, and the vast amount of preorders. Still feels kind of anti-consumer, but they did have an alpha and a beta.

I said it in the other thread and I'll say it again: this is really, really lame. I'm still weary about the mission variety and how grandiose the overall experience will actually be.

Hopefully Giant Bomb will have a live stream on Monday. I plan on getting the digital version, so I can hold off and see if the game is a gigantic mess.

I don't really think it's going to be because I had a blast with the beta, but it would be good to know if something's completely busted at launch.

Now I'm thinking about putting the Ki-bosh on my pre-order.
Should I do it?
You just played the Beta. We even know how much content is in the game. Make your own decision. You have all the information at your fingertips.

Knowing the press won't be getting copies until Monday, it'll be hard to take any reviews written in the first week seriously depending on the size of this game.

To be expected. I wouldn't expect a legit review to come out for at least a week or two with the general public playing it.

As for those canceling pre-orders. I question why now and not after the beta even which was opened up for everybody? You would have been able to make a pretty informed whether you were into it or not, raids aside from the beta. I certainly was able to.

That makes sense since the experience early reviewers would have with this game will be completely different than the experience gamers will have on Day 1. Remember all the high scores BF4 got because the early reviewers never ran into the server problems that everyone else did after release?

I'm never going to understand some people here. This is an always online game, i would think after diablo 3 and sim city bungie/activision wants destiny to be review under same circumstance for all people getting it launched day.

Part of me wants to buy the game and the other doesn't want to buy it. I want to get it to play with my friends, but from the beta I just found the missions to be the boring side.

That's not really that surprising considering it's an online only title. They're likely taking every possible moment to ensure their servers are up to snuff so that they don't implode at launch.

Makes sense since it's online only. What good is a review when there's only 10 people playing online?

mildly interesting that activision are just cutting reviewers out of the equation. it'll probably lead to better written reviews - i don't think day 1 reviews of multiplayer games make much sense - but it feels like activision muscling in to let pr and marketing dictate the tone for the launch, which feels wrong to me.

There are no offline modes. The entire game, even the campaign which you can play solo requires you to be connected.

Is there any doubt this is a great game? Some anti-online people are going to hate on it. Some grind bored people are going to rant. The people not wanting to commit to an MMO-lifestyle will complain. The rest of us nerds will eat this up. I just wished I had more time to commit to this.

I'm surprised to see so many people actually give a shit about reviews more than anything.

Review threads for big launches are always hilarious. You will also see some people become overly concerned about the metacritic score too!

No part of the game is offline. It's all online.

Well this makes more sense now then. I fully thought there was a SP component that could be played offline if you were disconnected. Thanks for the correction all!

Either way I am committed to the cause with my Digital GE pre-order. No turning back now.

Not gonna cancel my preorder or anything dramatic, but like I said in the Withdrawal thread, it's kind of worrying. The Beta was great, but it also only showcased a small portion of the game's content; using that alone as a barometer doesn't really work. While naturally late reviews don't necessarily equal bad games, they do indicate an increased chance that the game will be bad.

Again, not trying to go all drama queen. But this isn't great news.

I have some serious concerns about the gameplay and I was back and forth on the beta and was waiting for some reviews before I purchased...

I guess I'll just skip out on those preorder bonuses and wait it out...

This game is not a true online game... Most people will be running through the pve stuff solo... I want to see if it holds up through an entire game because the mission variety was not doing it for me...

A lot of people are curious as to how much 'content' is in the game.

A valid concern.

Metascore of 75-80/100 incoming :S (not that this is necessarily bad, but the hype makes Destiny appear like it's a 9/10)

What kind of shitty reviewer would want to get a review for a online focused game out day 1 anyway?

Its always a bad idea.

You don't have throw up a score on day one. But a writeup about the game's single player and relative amount of content in the game would be pretty useful to some people.

Barometer? For what? Length or amount of content? There's four planets, five strikes (six on PS), and a raid. That should give you an indication as to how much stuff there is. More if you count grinding, loot collecting, and such.

If you mean a barometer for quality I think there's more than enough there to make a judgement for yourself as to the standard of quality for the game.

serious question : if amazon or any retailer send or put in stores a day early, can we play it ? will severs be up ? Bannable to play before launch ?

I can understand holding off on giving it a final score, or talking about how it holds up under pressure until launch day, but reviewing the content that is there is something you can do with a smaller group of people. You then update your review on/after launch day, once you see everything in the wild. It's not like it will be drastically different to before, except a whole bunch of random people.

Something that's pretty common for reviews is review days, where you tell everyone who's reviewing the game to log on between 2pm-8pm or whatever, and the company will make sure there's lots of people online (namely a bunch of their staff, which for Bungie is in the hundreds). After all, outside of the Hub/Tower you only need a minimum of 11 people online. From what I remember, when you're out doing campaign missions/raids, you can have a maximum of 6 people, and when you're doing MP, that's 6v6. You don't need thousands of people to realistically judge what the experience will be like (outside of judging whether the server will hold up naturally).

If it is a legit copy you should be able to play before launch, assuming Bungie has the servers up of course.
