Destiny review copies being sent out one day before release, impacting review dates

greg miller bragging about job perks via pics on twitter? that never happens....

Why are reviewers being sent the limited edition ?

naive. i honestly dont have a problem with it. the bragging about getting stuff first and exclusively is what's childish and unprofessional, and not that a billion dollar publisher wants to curry more favorable press via LE's

sorry for using "via" twice in one post, it wont happen again

Unless you're IGN apparently?

Edit: Servers don't turn on until Monday anyways. Will be a nice paperweight until then.

Actually it seems like copies were sent out to arrive on Friday, monday at the very latest. Ours would have been there already, too, if it wasn't for shitty delivery service. No big deal. It would have been useless anyway, as you mentioned.

I do sincerely hope that Destiny out of the box has the level of content of something like Diablo. In general, I've (and many others) have grown accustomed to playing loot games for several hundred hours, and I'm hoping we can do the same with Destiny.

But more like Diablo RoS and not like Diablo Vanilla

If Destiny fucks up the endgame like Diablo
3
Vanilla then we'll have the next two weeks massive meltdowns and complaints. And no Day-1 review could have warned us. Best thing is to check metacritic and compare User review scores with Gaming Magazine scores. If there is a big mismatch between these scores then you know something is fishy. And i don't mean all the rage 0s that were given because some servers were not avaible on launch day.

Greg miller is a prick in my opinion

Seems like some people think Bungie has something to prove to the gaming scene. I would understand such a view if their track record was lame. But it isn't. It's superb. The alpha and beta further strengthen that. Now, if some people don't like their style, then that's just fine. But their games work. And they work beautifully. They are right there at the top with other technically competent (very very competent) developers.

It will fall down to tastes. Some of you here didn't like the beta, and your views of the game were this and that. You are not wrong in your taste, but this game can't possibly bomb. There is just no way that review score will be bad. Beta tests usually show how the final game will be (judging from dozens of beta tests I participated in on pc), minus the glitches and fixes that comes with such tests. Everything the game did in the beta, was done perfectly. Mechanics weren't broken. You could find the occasional glitch here and there, but nothing game changing for the worse.

Outside of overloaded servers on launch day, which is something I would be very surprised to see NOT happen (seriously, you would think developers learn from other game launches), the game will be the bomb. All of this is my opinion ofcourse, based on what I know about beta tests and Bungie games. They may not be perfect (who is), but they work and they rock. The only reason to read reviews, for me, is to look for anything I might have missed, or getting a different point of view. But wait for a review before I buy a game? THIS game? #bringonspacemagic please.

Urk is right. we don't gain anything from reading a review composed at a point when a game is fundamentally different from how it'll be at launch.

I think he means that should reviewers play the game pre-launch, they would do so on pretty much empty servers, as opposed to when the game launches and the rest of the world will log in. It's a multiplayer oriented game, and judging it in any other environment will not paint the right picture.

This x10000.

Just...no.

I hate GTAV, so your argument was bad for me. I hate EVERYTHING about GTA. No beta or demo would ever sell me on the series - it's just a terrible series.

You guys are missing his incredibly simple point.

Just one more thing to add:

To all those who say that beta tests always show a tailored part of the game - did you know all beta tests show the starting area of the game? Meaning that the most you can get is a taste. It's never a beta test of an advanced part of a game.

People realize that holds true for every single game that has launched with online MP right?

The only difference is Destiny has far less social interaction than most online games so it should be even less of an issue if anything.

True that Destiny seem less social than most online games, but it's much more social than sp games with mp component, and so resembles online games more. That is a distinction to consider.

Live streamed review

We’re now less than 24 hours before Destiny launches on September 9, 2014, and the game’s servers are supposed to switch on at 8am ET to give media and other select individuals a head start. We’ve got a ton of Destiny content coming your way over the next stretch of days, and it starts here with our review livestream.

I don’t know yet when we’ll be running our Destiny review, but I’m going to be playing as much as I can this week to make it as timely as possible. We’re clear to start broadcasting footage as soon as the servers go live, though, so I’m going to do just that. Tune in at 8am ET for your first look at the final version Destiny. I’ll stream for at least an hour from there, and then I’ll be back throughout the day.

Related: A clean start for everyone, including beta players, at Destiny‘s launch

You can tune in to watch the stream out Digital Trends’ Twitch channel, but I’ve also embedded the feed right here. Check back throughout the day for more play sessions; I’ve got to juggle the gaming time alongside my daily writing/editing tasks, but my plan is to spend the lion’s share of this work day wandering around in Bungie’s sci-fi universe.

I’m happy to answer any questions you might have about Destiny. Just ask in the Twitch stream’s chat channel. Just bear in mind that I’m running the stream all by myself, so I may miss a few questions if they come up during heavy action. To access the chat, go directly to the Twitch stream page and sign into your account.

Not really bothered by this decision, an always online shared shooter needs to have its community online and playing in order for a reviewer to properly judge it. I think some media folks are just salty they won't get to play the final game until the same time as a regular gamer like me :-)

The sooner we find out if the hype behind this game was justified, and if it really is a "stand-out shooter" the better...embargo's be damned!

Most are salty for much more serious matters, like having to work in hyper crunch mode to deliver content in a wild west kind of scenario.

And also because - but that's me - this kind of things make you develop some kind of repulsion for the game you're covering, when it doesn't suck away the interest in the game completely. So when finally you're out of the emergency and have the time to play for yourself, at the very least you're waiting days for that kind of nausea to recede.

This is the game that reviews wont matter...
The game was sold on me on the Alpha and Beta. Those three days were the most amazing time I had with my PS4.

And how can someone review a multiplayer game without an online comunity to back it up?

I haven't seen much footage of this but man that fov isn't doing it for me, the fov can't be adjusted right?

Graphically it looks really nice.

That's the one and only thing that bothered me a lot in the beta, the fov is so narrow. It feels like your zoomed in all the time.

I disagree to an extent. You're right about the multiplayer component of the review. However, the Beta left plenty of unanswered questions as far as the single player experience. Rushed reviews hurt all of us in the short and long-term. I'd much rather journalists receive extra time to fully experience the single player and wait for a separate section focused on multiplayer.
