Is Mainstream Hatred Of Anime Growing?

I remember that there was this one show that everyone pressured me to watch claiming that it was the best shit they have ever seen called Fate/Zero and all that was, was a sexist garbage story with juvenile shock value in the form of two pedos who would harm kids for the show to appear as DARK and MATURE, reminded me of shitty Game of Thrones where there NEEDED to be a sex or rape scene each episode because it was a mature show for adults. Anime just can't seem to find a balance, everything is either dumb fanservice shit with bad jokes or overcompensating, juvenile dark shit.

so much sad

I still have so many positive memories of Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin to keep me happy tho. Would be great to see some more just come out and really grab me.

Hitman Reborn looked good but I never got around to checking out the manga.

(I currently read the Magi manga every blue moon and while it's got a great plot and characters, it doesn't have a really great dynamic I'm looking for...)

I... what? I don't even... how the hell is Fate/Zero sexist? The scene/arc you're referring to has no connotation to pedophilia or sexism in any way.

YYH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

amg ishibb is a yyh fan <33333333333 you can not escape from me anymore bearbear <3

I loved YYH and RK :D omg omg omg omg *squee*

We have to gush over our favourites on YYH and RK one of these days! In our secret evil lair !

KHR is okay. It's problematic later on, as more and more girl characters are assigned soft powers like healing and stuff. There's a girl that fights as one of the main fighters but when she really is in a pinch, she summons the real deal, whom is a boy character.

Shame.

I am trying a lot of stuff to satiate my shounen needs. Bleach, KHR, DN.Gray, Ao no Exorcist and none of them really hits the spot the way old titles used to. But then again, YYH was pretty odd even for back then.

Right now I'm only reading HxH and Kuroshitsuji (the latter not really shounen but hey, what a girl can do. beggars cant be choosers)

I think it's remained steady. People in your circles are just getting older. I used to be into anime and now I mostly hate it. I feel like I know a lot of people in the same boat.

well for one when the brooding main character sees saber he's all like "oh man she's a woman, why couldn't she be a man?" and also the two kings dismiss all of saber's arguments because she's a girl. Also every woman in that series is used as a tool, and team caster were kidnapping kids and doing terrible things to them to make the show seem mature, it all came off as incredibly juvenile and crappy to me.
I also watched fate stay night and couldn't finish it, the mc was annoying and useless and said stupid shit like "People die when they're killed!", also there's a forced romance where the crap Mc tells Saber that she's a girl and shouldn't fight where later saber goes all "Uguu!" over him. Thats why the new ufotable anime will be terrible, especially since urobuchi is writing it and theres still that dumb ginger mc!
Both represent anime where f/sn is a crappy harem and zero tries too hard and looks comical.

I...I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. Even with the avatar

Yeah.

That and as a Shounen girl, it's disappointing because I can no longer find any that show respect for women or even treat them like human beings. :(

There's Tokyo Esp or Akame ga Kill this season. The former has a female protagonist while the latter treats both genders equal (as in totally killable).

Then there's Attack on Titan if you haven't seen it, which doesn't sexualize the women at all.

The issue is that you're watching anime and not reading superior manga. Anime tend to adapt and fuck up royally manga. The manga medium is overall much more varied in things like art styles, storylines, and has a lot more stories centered around strong female characters if you're into that as well.

Anime is good and all but the current medium is oversaturated with otaku bait. Basically what's making the most money in Japan in anime product outside of certain manga adaptations like One Piece is shows that are either selling product like YGO/Duel Masters, or shows with popular moe-style characters basically.

Just read manga, it's like comics but black and white and read from right to left.

This has probably already been said in this 23+ page thread, but from someone that has never been into anime, I notice from the mainstream that it is associated [unfairly] with the isolated/escapist culture that often accompanies the worst part of the Internet. I am not making a judgement on people who love anime, just being honest about what I hear and see from mainstream America on the topic. It has a perception of being associated with immaturity...often like gaming but to a worse degree.

I don't have these views specifically, just answering the OP's question.

"My girlfriend called Spirited Away a cartoon and I dumped her."

Anime is totally legit but the culture is out of control. Too many escapist maniacs and not enough comic book fans.

Digital ink can do pretty much anything physical cels could at this point, and more.

This is something most people understand because most production studios don't take advantage of the possibilities. There was at least an element of style to the "un-animation" cels of old.

Anything like that which remains today has to be done intentionally. Most of the time it seems like we just get a bunch of unnecessary shading.

Yeah.

so much sad

Just off the top of my head, Usagi Drop, Moribito, Rose of Versailles, and basically everything by Studio Ghibli?

Edit: Unless you were looking for strictly Shounen, not to versed in that area, but I think Moribito kinda fits.

Also Utena, Evangelion, Kara no Kyoukai, Gunbuster, Diebuster, FMA: Brotherhood, Ghost in the Shell, Monster, Steins;Gate, Shin Sekai Yori, Kyouso Giga, and though I personally don't like it Claymore to name a few more.

Saw them all already .... except for Usagi Drop. Also saw Utena :D but.... they are sort of old titles :x

I dont like Akame ga Kill kind of concept cuz idk. I dont like anything with skimpy outfits for the female characters in general. Although Yoko was okay in Gurenn Laggan, "okay" is not exactly a positive descriptor in my book. More like.... SIGH I GUESS SHE'S OKAY

OOOOH I havent seen some of them (bolded ones), but sounds like what you like is what i like, so thanks for the list.

Yeah, I think it's really sad that people stereotype the whole medium as wifu/moe non-sense. There's so much more that Anime offers. Stuff like Mushishi and Mononoke are down right stunning both in terms of visuals and content.

Yeah.

The only shounen anime that I can think of off the top of my head that I've watched and that fits is Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. The manga is great too~ The author is also a woman.

Have you seen GiTS: ARISE? Been a while since I watched it but I don't recall any skimpiness in that. Even if it's there though, Kusanagi is such an empowered and in charge character, I doubt it'd matter.

Also not exactly shounen, but you might wanna check out Planetes or Space Brothers if you're looking for something that has substance. (Or if your'e into outer space.).

*rolls around*

i like this harem anime i found called hakuoki. the fighting in it is kind of girly, but whateverrrrrrrrrrr. also saw Basara :D that was fun <3

:x

oh, and um, i dont like hyoka ..... i dont like anything with super uggguuuu characters .__.

i donno. maybe i define ugguuu differently?

i just.. like, those super-try-hard-kawaii characters whom are supposed to embody hyper-femininity .... those characters makes me gag

like Nia in GL is an example or whatsherface in GuiltyCrown. the singing one.

I just .... I just cant.

BTW, just for posterity sake, I'm not the poster that argue that anime is crappy .__. Im the one that said, there are good animes, just need to know where to find it / have sane friends who can rec good ones (just wanna reiterate that, idk why. haha)

:3

How did you enjoy Ping Pong? I found it very enjoyable.

Yes, Chitanda is awful.

I LOVE PING PONG

A disdain for anime in general Western culture has been around since the 90s popularity explosion that happened with Evangelion. A lot of it came down to the typical insults of weird big eyes or even the fact that you were watching a cartoon.

I didnt really know there was mainstream anime hate to begin with. Though there certainly instances of the stupid geek hierarchy, such as with giantbomb.

.

Because that is true, compared to other fanscenes. I think part of the reason why anime have a bad image is because of their fans and compared to, lets say, comicfans here in europe or boardgame-fans/Warhammer-fans whatever, a lot of these people define their lifes through one of their hobbies.

"I wanna live in Japan!" - "I wanna go to an Onsen!" - "Japan is the country where everything is perfect."

I wish it wouldnt be like that, but those "weeaboos" really exist and if you go to a convention you will find a lot of, what I would call anti-social people. They define their life through anime, their whole room is full of animeposters, they can only talk about anime, they try to convince everyone that anime is so great and mature (and in the end recommend Elfenlied or some "epic" Shounen series)...

Yeah.

You really ought to watch Attack on Titan. Not the best anime in history, but it's a badass female gallore shonen with little to no sexualization or whatsoever. It's... refreshing.

Ever since anime got that "HD art style" look, most of it has felt soulless to me. The stupid eye thing has gotten way out of hand too.

Another one of Giant Bomb's criticisms of anime is that people with anime avatars have a huge tendency to be the terrible type of people that cause major trouble on the internet. I tend to agree.

The same could be said of really any kind of avatar, really. Sonic's fanbase doesn't have a great track record either...

The Sonic fanbase has produced even more questionable pieces I'd say, turn off the mature label on deviantart and you may find something that you wouldn't like, or would, judging by your avatar.

sadly, many anime these days have too much fanservice just for the sake of having it.

I'm glad to see that there are some shows that do not have it, and those also tend to be the ones with either a good plot and/or well developed characters of both genders.

I really miss the days when characters had plenty of psychological troubles, with plenty of flaws, they felt human, and you could relate to them.

nowadays most are empty vessels, just there to fill the scene.

But i certainly haven't lost hope for the anime, there are some kickstarters, Under the Dog, going on, and sometimes studios luckily do want to take a chance, and go out of the box.

i like to think Attack on Titan, Mushishi, and Zankyou no Terror, as some of the recent shows taking chances. And plenty of artistic ones as well, although they are few compared to the amount of fanservice jiggle stuff.

And don't forget Studio Ghibli.
