Ouch. Good point.

This thread is making realize I am not up to speed at all. Good lord.
Yes. It was started to deliberately distract people from other issues, and people latched on without educating themselves. There are a ton of well-meaning people who have aligned themselves with these causes without fully understanding what they were signing their names to. Now people have been whipped up into a frenzy over generalizations about the word "gamer" while people like Jenn Frank are being driven from the industry by clueless masses. It's absolutely infuriating to see.
Half the problem is everybody seems to have their own interpretation of what that word means, like fedora, hipster and now gamer. Is it an ironic label about exaggerated stereotypes who preach the death of all white/male/cis people? Or is it a banner to rally behind for equality? This never would have happened if not for the slut shaming of Zoe Quinn, and the slut shaming of Zoe Quinn never would have happened if she wasn't already unpopular for acting against what some assholes think all video games should be about. And I can't read two messages in support of this thing without seeing somebody going off on "social justice warriors."
I'm sorry, the movement is tainted. The conversation about corruption in games journalism is probably forever tainted by this shit. People say games journalism is an echo chamber occupied by people with disdain for their audience. Congratulations, you've given them ample fuel for that disdain.
He also linked to a Change petition. What do you think GAF?
That's the thing. People make sweeping generalizations about "gamers" all day. Constantly. In every thread on this forum, even, it feels like. And yet none of it will come to mind the next time someone meets someone who calls themselves a "gamer." These generalizations tend to not transform into stereotypes. It's a weird thing to be upset about now considering how prevalent it is and has always been, and despite the regular person's view of gamers not really being affected by it.Am I supposed to care if some people on twitter and youtube are saying gamers are bigots?
Like, no one in real life is going to hear I play games and immediately assume I'm a bigot and hate me.
I don't understand 'internet drama' x___x

I heard this sort of ridiculous argument all the time: well if you really don't support terrorism why don't you preface every political opinion you have with a condemnation of terrorism? Why doesn't every Muslim preface every political opinion they have with a condemnation of terrorism? It's the same argument as the conservative meme about black people not talking about black-on-black crime.
Suffice to say, I don't much care for this line of argumentation. People shouldn't have to explicitly distance themselves from extremists, it should be assumed unless they say or do something that would cause a reasonable person to assume they agree with extremists.

This is only somewhat tangentially related to this whole thing, but can I just say that the word "gamer" is a stupid term and always has been a stupid term? It's bullshit PR speak used to try and identify and categorize people into groups; to make sure their products are "for the gamer" and "gamer friendly". It is used to make a demographic of people, people they want to ceaselessly sell things to mind you, feel special. It's a stupid label on people and like all labels, I feel it it something people should just let go of. I know not everyone shares this opinion but I don't like the idea of having words identify and label me as something. I'm not a gamer. I'm me. I'm making games for people. Not gamers.
Thank you boogie for making this video. This echoes my thoughts perfectly.
The amount of hatred and vitriol pointed toward gamers (specifically male gamers) has reached disgusting levels. I'm glad that people are starting to stand up to this revolting trend.
Never make general statements about people. This lead to many tragedies in the past, and we should all learn from past mistakes.
at the end of the day are we really just arguing over a word and what that word means? the definition of a word? I am feeling dumber by the minute the more I get baited into the rabbit hole of researching this nonsense.

yeah, not really. parody can be a form of criticism.Ouch. Good point.
what the hell is a cis white male?
And I get angry knowing that every minute you spend researching this is a minute you aren't spending on finishing Ghost Song.
Mostly I feel deeply, deeply ashamed that I've spent so much time choosing to identify myself with a name that these people feel like they have some measure of ownership over, and embarrassed that you're trying to peddle that Internet Aristocrat garbage in here as reasonable and well-researched.
The relationship between the two groups has been strained for a lot longer. Realising that the press, had drifted from the consumer's side to the developer's side was a long and slow process.Agreed. This battle has been going on since Mass Effect 3, when many folks within games press took consumers to the verbal woodshed... and the relationship between the two groups has been strained since then. It had to come to a head at some point, when consumers finally got tired of being berated by the press corps that covers their hobby.
For the people on /v/, it's the different things for different people, but the main motivation for many is to stop what a lot of those same people feel is the "corrupted joke of an industry that is games journalism" once and for all and expose some corruptions. A lot of these people want to stop conflict of interests and whatnot. It is, but reading this 4chan thing brings another question even more forefront to my mind -- what on earth is driving all the *effort* involved in these weird campaigns?
What is at stake, to some of the people on /v/, is not just the existence of an open and honest industry, free from drama and free from things like, for example as this was one of the hot topics on /v/ a few days ago, the whole ignoring the rape of Eron Gjoni, while promoting other articles (touched a bit in the 2nd Quinnspiracy Theory vid), but simply making games about games once more, without drama, without special interests, without corruption and without double-standards.what really are the stakes? who honestly cares if a so called "SJW" journalist said something you don't like? Who honestly cares?
I'm so confused, can I still play video games or what?
I almost forgot it's midterm elections. Why do I feel this is relevant to a whole lot of this?
the whole ignoring the rape of Eron Gjoni

People using the #Gamergate tag have already succeeded in driving Jenn Frank to quit, so hey. Great success!
Of course!
If you're literally Hitler, that is. Are you a literal Hitler?
i'm sorry the what of Eron Gjoni?
I'm just so fuckin sick of this entire discussion. It was interesting and helpful a year or two ago, now its just getting out of hand and exhaustive. I wish I could just block all discussions about this crap from every place I visit... It is never ending and tears communities apart.
You can't fix a systemic problem by scaring individuals out of the industry. Not to mention as Jenn elaborated on her blog, she did declare her conflict of interest in that case and the newspaper editor/legal team cut it out.Well you got to admit the article could of been better written...
Again, I am still trying to check and double check things for research as, truthfully and this is me and my own personal opinion here, there is a lot of stuff going around and happening, and it can be overwhelming. The stuff I have read from some of the points raised checks out with what I've checked. Does this mean I agree with this, or any other guy or groups views all the time/none of the time? Of course not, I am trying to learn more from as many sources as I can. Some of this stuff is serious, and it's the reason why I haven't done any stuff like tweet these hashtags or sign petitions or whatnot: I want to be as informed with this as I can.Huelen, I'm disappointed. You really need to do better research. :/ Internet Aristocrat's stuff is a mess of pins in a board on the wall all connected with string, the main allegations ("sleeping with journalists for better review scores") are clearly untrue, and it's all simply dripping with misogyny. It's pretty gross.
I don't think it should matter what 4chan says to be honest. It never meant much in the past.
Eron and Zoe agreed on the idea that if their partner were to cheat on them, and then had sex with them, it would be considered rape because they would not consent if they knew.i'm sorry the what of Eron Gjoni?
This is all so tiring. I think I'll call myself a penguin from now on.
but what will reddit and by extension the internet use for their memes nowThat's why you shouldn't use their shit.
I mean yeah, Quinn doesn't come out of this looking good either (though she's definitely more of a victim than her ex who went about this the wrong way), but part of the problem is we shouldn't have known about any of her cheating in the first place. It's not our business, and the claims it tied into positive reviews for game you can get for free anyway amounted to one mention a list of 50 different Greenlight games once. There are far better ways to warn select people you think may have been under threat of getting emotionally manipulated by her than misconstruing or outright lying about the connections she had to everybody on a public blog.Eron and Zoe agreed on the idea that if their partner were to cheat on them, and then had sex with them, it would be considered rape because they would not consent if they knew.
Then, well, y'know.

As for myself, personally, one of the things the interests me about all this is what happened a few days ago where a gorllion articles from independent blogs about a single issue dropped on the same day. I need to do more of my own research before forming an educated opinion of course, but what I know at the moment seems to be fishy to me.
