Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

The impossible was said in the other thread. Someone complaining that not enough characters were cut. We have too many of them!

I will unlock everyone the same way I did last time:
1) Turn the game on.
2) Vs. mode against CPU AI at 9.0
3) Set the game to 1 HP for both of us.
4) Watch TV while losing ~1000 times.

But thats no fun :(

I love unlocking characters. Im happy smash bros still does it. I'm sorta hoping for some really creative and challenging ways to unlock characters.

Also hoping that smash bros 3D and Smash Wii U both have different unlocking methods for each color.

The Melee unlock requirements were easy though.

Beat Classic or Adventure for Jiggs.
Beat Classic or Adventure as Mario for Doc (easier than the Smash 4 one since 5.0 is above medium difficulty)
Beat Event 37 for Pichu
Complete 100 Man Melee for Falco (simple as DK, once more the Smash 4 one sounds harder)
Play (don't even have to complete) Classic Mode with 14 Character or Use them in VS. Mode for Marth (4 has double that)
Complete Classic Mode with 10 Characters including Link and Zelda for Young Link
Complete Event Match 29 for Ganondorf
Play Vs. Mode 20 Hours for Mewtwo (not hard, just time consuming)
Complete Stage #1 of Adventure with time ending in a "2" in the seconds meter. After that, beat Luigi and Peach in less than a minute, and then complete the Adventure mode for Luigi. Once more not hard, just obtuse.
Complete Classic Mode with Marth without continuing for Roy.
Clear Classic, Adventure, or Target with the other 24 for GW

So, are you guys just making things up, because it looks to me like the Smash 4 Unlock Requirement are more difficult overall.

Really liking all the music thus far. ;3

So, assuming the ESRB leak was concise with time, what secret characters do you think weren't there, considering the All-Stars lock?

Can we be realistic too?

I thinks its hilarious how Sakurai used some weird logic about not making SSE-styled cutscenes for the game because they would be spoiled by the internet, but doesn't extend that logic to removing unlockable characters from the game. I shouldn't be surprised, but still.

The shit he says sometimes is hilarious.

But hey.

You will have a ton of fun huh?

Is it yours?? I saw it on dorkly and had some good laughs xD

You'll have the best W/L ever

:P

Unlocking characters is a chore. As a kid, it was cool, but I'm 29, and I just want to play the full game. It's a lot like leveling up in Diablo II. Playing a Sorceress with Firebolt is interesting and exciting the first time. But if you have to start a new Sorceress, you just want to get to Frozen Orb and the other cool stuff so you can enjoy playing your full character.

I bet I will put more hours into this game than most folks here. The last fighting game I fully embraced was UMvC3, and I have well over 1000 hours into it. Don't mistake me, I will enjoy the game. But, I will enjoy it after I unlock the characters. :-)

Chorus Kids and Ice Climbers would be the only definites for me, based on those Smash run enemies and the rumors we've heard/the fact that they're the Ice Climbers. Other than that, I'd say probably more clones, whether they're Dixie, Impa, Wolf, Lucas, or Mewtwo.

Honestly, I'm still holding onto the Trophy Theory from aways back, as well as the Gematsu Leak, dumb as it may be. I'm thinking we're still missing Ridley, Impa, Chorus Kids, and since there's room for 5 more slots, and because Dixie Kong & Mewtwo barely missed out in Brawl and are now several times more relevant thanks to being playable in Tropical Freeze/the Bonus Boss (With 2 Mega Forms) in XY, I think they might round out the roster.

I have 13GB free in the internal storage of the Wii U (15GB minus 2 for the Mario Kart DLC). Think that'll be enough to get Smash 4 digitally or should I get a hard drive + y cable?

Played both the 3DS and Wii U versions at PAX Prime. This may be one of the few games I double dip on. Super excited for both!

Really glad you liked both! :D

It's always good news to see somebody enjoy both versions.

I greatly enjoyed the 3DS game, shame the Wii U version was only playable to a select few.

LTTP on the most popular Smash character list, but Meta Knight being in last place killed me. XD Completely deserved, although I'm holding Brawl's balancing in contempt more than the actual character.

Hard to say actually.. the 3DS version is 2GB, thats a lot for a 3DS game :p

Wii U version might be too big for your Wii U

Unlocking characters is one of the best parts for me. As a kid it was cool, and at 29, it's still really rewarding. It's just the kind of person I am. I like savoring things, savoring the smaller roster, so that when I FINALLY get an unlockable character, trying them out is that much sweeter.

I totally understand why many people just want everyone unlocked, especially if you plan on playing with friends right out of the box.

That said, I'm really glad there are still unlockables.

Hard to say actually.. the 3DS version is 2GB, very big for a 3DS game :p

Yeah, I first thought it was small for Smash, then Pokemon R/S on 3DS are 1.8GB and they are BIG games full of data for 700+ Pokemon and whatnot, so Smash on 3DS is pretty huge actually.

For some reason, I actually enjoy unlocking characters. It feels like there's something to look forward to when playing the game. I was kinda sad when I saw Smash 4 with a big starting roster.

I honestly don't know if it'd count as double dipping, solely due to different modes and stages; even with the shared rosters & presumably-similar unlocks, it's a lot more different than, say, 2 versions of Pokemon. I do see them as companion games, though.

I was going to say I don't double dip to make the point I don't see this as one, but in retrospect, I've done so with all 6 Pokemon Gens barring IV, Bombeman Max 2, and Skullgirls. Although it was always "Vanilla Version" and "Ultimate Version" with all the Gens but VI, & the others were free due to Club Nintendo/gift/IndieGoGo). Plus I've stated repeatedly I'd triple dip if Skullgirls was released on the Wii U. So I guess my argument now is "From a seasoned double-dipper, this isn't a double dip."

I like to consider it something apart from double dipping, since that usually implies you're getting two versions of the same game. :P

These are more like two different games which bear a lot of things in common.

With that said, I'm obviously double dipping buying both games! :D

Highly likely.

Some moves are just shit in competitive 1v1 smash so customisations can make them not suck and give a shit character more options.

I really hope so. Jigglypuff's Up Special in Brawl might be the most useless Smash move ever. The potential for her to finally have a useful Up Special in this game excites me.

I think custom moves will make the games more balanced, if only because if a special is OP, it can be banned without banning a whole character.

Exactly, there are guaranteed to be some ridiculous ones which is why I believe you cannot use them online unless you are playing with friends (unless I'm mistaken). If the community moderates them correctly and daily, I can see it being acceptable in the long run. It also adds a bit more depth to the characters.

The super in-depth post someone linked to above basically says that's likely the case. Having a worse option than the default doesn't do any harm, but the chance that options are more competitively viable than the default is only a helpful thing to a character's viability.

I think he doesn't really take into account the possibility that some of these moves, or particular combinations of these moves, might be OP as hell... but things like that tend to take a while to really shake out in a competitive community, so who knows.

It's interesting to me that some of the competitive players seem open to the idea of character customization (sans gear) being an option for tournaments and stuff, because I was expecting it to just be rejected outright.

Yeah, when you look at the characters who have great specials across the board (Meta Knight), and then look at a character like Brawl Jigglypuff... it opens you up to the idea. Although, I am still iffy on characters like Pit's Mom getting 12 unique moves, would've been cool if a few more characters besides Mii Fighters got that treatment. Sakurai is totally buttering his characters up, lol.

I know there would be unlockable characters, stages and customization movesets.

How people would feel about last 4 colors/alts being unlockable?

Yup, like I said before, it's like getting street fighter 4 and then ultra street fighter 4, only the difference isn't in roster/balance, but everything else. Smash Wii U is Ultra smash 3DS.

The more stuff to unlock the better.

I'll be overly ambitious with DLC and guess that we'll get 6 veterans (Snake, Lucas, Wolf, Ice Climbers, Mewtwo, Roy) and 6 newcomers for an even 12, allowing for there to be a whole DLC set of Amiibos next fall. Each would also come with its own stage, past stage, and musical pieces, so it'd probably be released as an update, but you have to pay to unlock all of the content (though others who have the content could use it against you). You'd also get the character and their stage for free if you used their Amiibo.

Hahaha ridiculous, it's like that one time when I (sarcastically) said I'd rather one less character than having Dr. Mario in the roster and everyone shat on me and tried to kill me with pitchforks and other pointy shit

His reasoning is that the cutscenes themselves were supposed to be in game prized for clearing the SSE stages. You can watch the cutscenes perfectly well through youtube without playing the game at all though, which makes them pointless as in-game prizes.

Unlockable characters aren't just a passive prize like that, but something directly tied to the gameplay. So, they aren't treated the same.

I wonder if there is enough time between 3DS release and Wii U release to take feedback/bugfixes into effect for Wii U.

Good question. I imagine any issues would require a patch on both ends, and judging by Nintendo, that may take a while.

The only thing I need spoiling next week is the roster and the customisable controls screen.

I need to see that CPP works with my own eyes. I can't see why not if N3DS' C-Stick works.

I don't mind unlockables like trophies, new modes, colors or whatever, but the characters are the meat of the game for me and it's annoying and tedious to unlock them. I just want to play with all the characters with my friends day 1. : (

I'm glad most fighting games don't do this lol.

You are definitely reaching for the cloud.

If we got DLC characters for Smash 4. I would like y'all to imagining this with me,

You finally finished with your errand, work or school then you just arrived at your house. First thing you would do is turning your preferred version on and went to EShop to purchasing the characters bundle. It's only 10 minutes to complete the downloading and installing process. You happily start up the game and went straight to game mode to only notice that DLC characters are still missing. Now you just realized that characters are unlockable characters despite the fact they are downloadable character. How would you felt?

I would play a single vs match. I would have probably completed the requeriments for unlocking those characters by the time DLC is released :p
