Something I found a bit weird: The majority of times Mario, Samus, and Bowser appear, they're getting the shit kicked out of them. It's a really noticeable trend in the early PotDs.Okay, large post incoming!
Some of you might remember that, a little over a month ago, I did a for-fun thing where I counted all the times each character has appeared in the Pics of the Day and listed those totals here. I said I'd update the totals in a month, but instead of doing that, I actually decided to scrap the whole thing and go bigger: count the times each character has appeared in the Pics of the Day plus the pics on each character page and the pics on the rest of the website, like in the How to Play, Assist Trophy, Pokémon, etc. sections.
It's been fairly time-consuming and I've had to chip away at it around work, but I'm finally finished! So without further ado, I present to you a list that will answer all-important questions like "How much does Sakurai love or hate my favorite character?" and "Does 'Sakurai bias' exist, and if so, how severe is it?"
Disclaimer: This list does not actually answer those questions and is just for fun. But I can tell you the answer to the second question right here: no, it does not.
Edit: Forgot Donkey Kong. He also seems to be part of the loser league.

When Wii was announced, first games named were "next generation versions of Mario and Zelda" and "big plans for Metroid".

Even if smash 3DS isn't the best smash bros, It'll very likely be the best handheld fighter, that's for sure. Nothing else on a handheld has the ease of access like smash bros. Nothing else has as much single player content (both in length and variety). Unless you're a super fan of a particular fighting game that happened to get a handheld version, I think you'll prefer smash over the rest.
I mean, almost every fighting game for handhelds are just a PORT, not a version designed for the ground up (in parallel with wii u, of course) for the handheld.

Jump Ultimate Stars would like a word with you, that's always been IMO the best portable fighting game ever. Had a huge single player campaign and a lot of variety with it's koma system.

This game's OST is gonna be so good. Thank God Club Nintendo is actually putting out a soundtrack CD. I've been pretty unimpressed with their rewards lately so I'm so glad they're doing it right for once.

So on the WiiU version, how many remixes of the brawl theme will there be? Brawl included mostly all of Melees main theme mixes, but Brawls were like 45 versions of the act same song. Will they include all of these?
I kind of like the brawl theme though. Not as much as any of the other smash themes, but it was good. Just overused.

PS Vita has great ports of Injustice, Mortal Kombat, UMVC3, Street Fighter x Tekken, Blazblue, and some other fighters including one that's just terrible.
And yet, all of these combined won't even compare to how much time I'm gonna spend with Smash 3DS.
Mario: Played every mainline entry to their completion and I love them all. Played most of the spinoffs too.
Yoshi: Finished Yoshi's Island, one of the best games on the SNES. Also liked Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's New Island more than most. I'm a fan.
Wario: Played every Wario game besides 4, the DS game, Wario World and the Wii one. Wario Land 3 is my top GBC game that isn't called Pokemon. LOVE that game. Also finished every Wario Ware besides Twisted, which I just picked up and can't wait to get into. Those games are pure genius.
Mr Game & Watch: Unfortunately, I've never held a Game and Watch, and haven't gotten to any of the various Game and Watch Collections. Rest assured, they are on The List.

I played Super Metroid for the first time in 2013, and by the time I was finished, there was no doubt in my mind that it was one of the top 10 greatest games I've ever played. Kid Icarus: Haven't played the NES or GB game, but enjoyed the hell out of Kid Icarus Uprising. Some of the best voice acting in a Nintendo game, ever.
Fire Emblem: Only played Awakening, but I LOVED it and I look forward to playing through the rest of the series.
Kirby: I've completed most of the Kirby platformers and enjoyed all of them.
Little Mac: Played Punch Out for NES. Couldn't beat Mike Tyson. Fun game but I didn't think it was that great. Awesome soundtrack, though. I really want to play the Wii game.
Fox: Completed every Star Fox besides Assault and Command. Star Fox 64 has the best voice acting in a Nintendo game, period.
Pokemon: Played the living hell out of every mainline game, and most of the spinoffs. I'm kinda obsessed.
Duck Hunt: I've never actually owned Duck Hunt, but I've played it on various friends and family's homes on their NES. Fun game.
ROB: Never played Gyromite. I love ROB in Mario Kart DS, though ^_^
Mother: My Nintendo shame! I've never played any Mother game besides Earthbound, which I've played for about 20 minutes. I'll get to them, I swear ; _ ;
F-Zero: Completed all of them besides the GBA games. F-Zero and X are good games, but GX is one of the greatest racing games of all time, period. Playing the same stage in story mode over and over and over and over and over never felt so good.
Animal Crossing: Played the 3DS game, and really enjoyed it for the month I actually stuck with the whole routine.
Pikmin: Played through all three, love all three.
Wii Fit: Never played, never will.
Dr Mario: I've played it on NES.
Xenoblade: Played and completed it a couple of weeks ago. Fucking great game, so happy to see Shulk in Smash.

Glad so many people seem to be enjoying my PotD/website pic character counts! It was fun to do, and I'll still be updating the results every so often.
For a living? No, not really. I've always ever done game journalism on the side because I'm passionate about games; it just so happens that I've had a fair degree of success with it, plus it's a good way to get my name out there and build my resume. I've never seriously tried to make it into one of the big outlets (IGN, GameSpot, etc.), though, because my living situation isn't really conducive to it (I'm based in LA and can't really leave at the moment) and because game journalism in general has kind of gone to shit and it's one of the worst careers you can get into salary-wise.
It's my work as UDON Entertainment's editor and (until recently) my position as an editor and associate producer at ShiftyLook that pays the bills. Not that I'm complaining; ShiftyLook was and UDON is an awesome gig!
