WSJ: ''Mojang to be bought by Microsoft'

Microsoft might buy the company where lighting struck one time.

I've been buying lotto tickets from the gas station where a guy once won $2.5 million dollars. Why am I not rich?

Ok, that's not apples to apples, but I think this would be a bad move for all parties.

I don't see the logic in this really.

Yeah, me either. Buying out Minecraft is not going to win them this console generation.

On the other hand, if they'd gone and priced the Xbone w Kinect at $350 to Sony's $400 at launch, they probably would be winning this console generation, while it'd cost them probably less than 2 billion dollars.

Minecraft
...HaloCraft...

....Gears of War-Craft...

.....FableCraft..........
...........ForzaCraft.....
....................OldRAREIPCraft................

This would be a terrible, terrible deal for MS. Mojang literally only has MineCraft.

Excluding physical goods, Minecraft has earned Mojang about $1.23 billion based that 54 million number from like a month ago and that counter on their site.

I suspect the SECOND they buy this company, Minecraft 2 will be announced with Halo themes, Sunset Overdrive themes, Forza themes.

They're going to multi year this biznatch

"If we can't make it, we'll buy it." - Microsoft.

Just think. How many actual exclusives that would move the needle could $2billion buy? Then ask yourself who the fuck is running things at xbox.

I hope they do it. God, this is rich.

I don't know why some people think this would be so funny.

This is Microsoft securing one of the biggest new IPs in forever. They can announce Minecraft 2 and give it the type of flourishes that can cross over from their own games. Halo skins and Forza skins. New features that add to the creative flexibility. Crossovers with Project Spark. Who knows!

I think that's fucked up because that's yet another series that was everywhere and for good reason, and this strategy from Microsoft keeps depriving legions of gamers of franchises like that. But I don't think it's "funny" in the sense that it's a bad idea.

Maybe it is a bad idea, but considering how Minecraft won't stop selling copies, a Minecraft 2.0 could potentially be psycho large.

I'd watch the PlayStation store. If Minecraft disappears, you know the deal has gone through.

lol. That's not how this sort of deal works :P

Isn't he always claiming to be anti-corporate? Is this why he started to reconsider Oculus being bought by Facebook (gained perspective on what it's like to be offered money by the big players)?

I don't see what Notch has to gain from this. He is already printing money with Minecraft, and has all the autonomy he can dream of to do whatever he wants.

2 Billion could also buy a bunch of IPs, hell, a bunch of studios as well.

This rumor suggests to me Microsoft might deprecate their console business.

You don't buy the most popular videogame of our time to cordon it off on your semi-popular home console.

Maybe they will do Minecraft2. No idea how a sequel would look, but they could use it to boost Xbox one, Windows Phone and new Windows at the same time.

Christ. I STILL don't see how this makes ANY sense.

We need to know more about this if it's true. This would easily be one of the most over-valued IPs/companies that MS has purchased in a long time.
