Apple announces Apple Watch

Hoping this can help push the fitness side of wearable tech into something more. I can't wear a watch at work without destroying it but love the idea of fitness bands. My Fitbit serves me well

Yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Don't underestimate the power of convenience. It probably won't happen right away at these prices, but once smart watch models get as cheap as $50-$99 I could see them becoming very mainstream.

I don't really see how this is more convenient than just taking your phone out of your pocket/purse. Also, this product will never be cheap lol.

So lg seems to be in the lead now. Their next watch looks great and their phone is mostly good.

And I personally prefer the ZenWatch in both looks and function (apparently, the battery lasts longer than a day with that one). If there was one good concept out of AndroidWear, that one's it. I agree with others that it's best to allow multiple manufacturers tackle these things under a unified OS.

The fitness stuff looks cool. But it's not worth $350 to me just for that. And I don't like the look of the watch, itself.

At this stage, based on it specs and announced features it strikes me as pointless. Maybe when a watch can replace all the things you carry, such as a phone, it will be more useful. With decent battery life too.

Not impressed with the design at all.

I will give this smart watch thing a couple of years to mature.

Also, still laughing about the Swiss watch makers comment.

I just think it looks awesome. A regular watch that I would normally go for + smart watch stuff.

As long as the battery is decent I'm on board.

As I understand it, the Apple Watch lacks GPS unless tethered to your phone. Is that correct?

How is that even remotely useful for runners?

Well I don't think many of the other features work without a phone either, so it's an all or nothing package I guess.

I don't know. I read somewhere it has a built in GPS.

Any info on the battery? Who wants a watch you have to recharge every 6 hours?

The Apple unveiling was awesome. Not that crazy about the watch, its cool if not necessary, but I have to hand it to the marketing team, that ad was superb.

The G Watch R looks a lot better in press photos than in real life. The press photos make it look like the screen isn't that noticeably different from the bezel, but in reality it's jarring:

Pure sex.

Like most "new" things it's hard to imagine how good it will be until we use it. I remember thinking how the iPad was just a big iPhone. How wrong I was.

Once the watch loses the need to be tethered it will be glorious.

Is there a real life photo of the zen watch for comparison though?

I have to say this watch has grown on me massively from earlier this morning. I think the design is gorgeous but could definitely do with the inevitable slimmer profile in Revision 2.

Needing another iDevice for this item seems kind of limiting. I wonder what percentage of iPhone owners have a Mac, for instance.

I didnt want a smartwatch before, and I also didnt want an Apple Watch after seeing its reveal.

But seeing the Zenwatch I WANT!!!!!!

Why cant they make this work on an iPhone 6? Not fair. And Im not willing to switch to Android for a watch.

However if it works as a standalone watch, then maybe.....

You should post a picture of it on its side. It looks so good with that brown strip.

LOL.

This thread reminds me of every iPhone and iPad thread since inception. You guys try too hard. This thing is gonna redefine expectations for smartwatches in every conceivable way, while setting a standard that Apple will annually make better. Thinner, smarter, better.

It's cool if it's not for you. And it's certainly understandable if you're feeling defensive after having bought into some other OS/product line that makes this somewhat inaccessible to you now even if you did like it (you know who you are). But if you think Apple won't be wildly successful selling this product to their robust base of iPhone 5+ owners and that they won't be very happy with their purchases and continuing experience with Apple, you're either new to the tech world or you have Alzheimer's.

Me? In4one. Probably two. And hopefully the new Intel chipset will be out by then so I can pick up a new MBP at the same time.

Just to clarify:

The watch is completely useless w/o an iPhone nearby? Or just has limited functionality?

Limited functionality. It's for people who own an iPhone. If you don't have or want an iPhone, it's not going to work for you.

Samsung once again releases the heaviest, clunkiest product with the worst battery life in the bunch.

I don't get Samsung Mobile fans. Not suggesting Apple's been impressive lately, but Samsung just half-asses it's way to release products with one or two useless features just to claim innovation.

Samsung Mobile is the technology equivalent to the guy commenting "First" on CNN articles.

The thing I like about the smartwatch 3 is that it can pop out of the silicone strap and just be the timepiece. Because of this, any company can make designer bezels, cases, and straps for it. It can have any number of looks as a result.

Also it seems to have the largest battery life so far.

I just can't see myself using this at work. I like to think I have nice taste and bought a nice watch and I don't know if this could ever replace a watch like that.

Does this show the time if your iPhone doesn't have connectivity? Does it need the iPhone to have network connectivity?

It's just...it's ugly. Professional people in my industry will not wear this. But maybe it has appeal for others or for casual wear.
