Sites giving this 9+ shouldn't be taken seriously IMHO. It is very clearly a mediocre game in the eyes of most gamers.
Well played Activision... Well played.

I don't think any reviews should be taken seriously. Like I said, I'm on vacation, started mere hours after the servers went live, and spent most of my time playing and I still feel like I don't have a thorough understanding.Sites giving this 9+ shouldn't be taken seriously IMHO. I can only missions with friends? WHAT?
I'll wait for match making to be patched in before I buy this game

Hey GAF - I've been on holidays and out if the gaming loop for a couple weeks. Finally get home Friday and thinking about grabbing Destiny on the weekend. Can someone give me a quick rundown on what they improved/added from the beta? I remember that was supposedly a tiny slice of the entire game so I'm curious what's been added in terms of content, modes, areas, etc.
How much larger is Old Russia in the final game? Is the world more interesting? NPCs to talk to, side quests, etc? Are the invisible walls/instant deaths gone? How many zones per planet?
Sorry if this has been answered I'm just on mobile and don't have long - wanna get this preload started in the next half hour depending on the answers I get. Thanks guys!

Posted this in the OT but figured I'd post it here as well. In a rush and don't have time to read the reviews - just looking for anyone who's played the game to give me a few quick answers. Thanks!
Also gonna add - did they fix the missions and narrative structure in the single player campaign? I'm gonna be playing the game solo so I'm hoping it's more cohesive than it was in beta

No. Mission and narrative structure is the same. Also gonna add - did they fix the missions and narrative structure in the single player campaign? I'm gonna be playing the game solo so I'm hoping it's more cohesive than it was in beta
Weapon balance mostly I guess. And opening up the rest of the game. The world is slightly more boring with less to do because public events are way more rare for some reason.Hey GAF - I've been on holidays and out if the gaming loop for a couple weeks. Beta actually ends up being about 25% of the campaign content. There are no surprise modes or content. There is the Moon, Venus, and Mars. The Reef, which we expected to be a second hub, actually exists just for a cutscene...I remember that was supposedly a tiny slice of the entire game so I'm curious what's been added in terms of content, modes, areas, etc.
It's not. What we had in the beta is what is in release. Closed of areas remain closed off.How much larger is Old Russia in the final game?

: Doesn't live up to ridiculous hype = Mediocre, fuck you bungie I'll never buy a game from you again.

Did Bungie fix the repetitive gameplay and thin narrative that I've seen people complain about? If not, I'm not sure how the 9/10s are justified. I want this game's world to suck me in like Halo's did, yet one of the most common critiques I'm seeing is that Destiny feels too gamey because your objectives aren't given meaningful weight or a place in a larger picture.

Said absolutely no one. Way to strawman.

It had some big faults but for a new IP this is a great start IMO. Instead of focusing on just the bad, focus on the really fun stuff
Solid 7.5-8/10
I'm having so much fun playing with friends tho
Nope. Those are the main complaints most people have with the game and are totally valid criticisms.
Personally, Halo's "game world" didn't mean much to me after Halo 1 (cheesy story, bad writing, lame villains, aliens talking english etc). The missions in Destiny aren't as satisfying though.
I can see people giving the game 9+ because of the polish, art direction, quality of the gunplay, addictive nature etc. It depends on what you value in an experience basically. I think all of this stuff is super solid, but personally the game is an 8 for me.
It's pretty good, and I'm enjoying it for the most part, but it's probably not something I'll stick with.
I'm level 10 now, so right now there are Story Missions/Stike Missions/ Crucible aka PVP/ Patrol Missions.
So I read that after you reach level 20 there are also raids you can play with 6 players cooperatively, true? If so, how are those structured? How many are there? Are they any good?
It is a amazing game IMO.
I see, thanks. Halo 1 has a simple but very clear story that gives context to everything you see and do. I found it really engaging, which is part of the reason Halo turned me on to FPSs in the first place. Shooting alone isn't enough to keep me interested, so I guess I'll wait and see how the expansions turn out. I want to find out more about the Traveler because it's the only thing I've seen in Destiny that has the vast scale and sense of mystery that grabbed me in Halo. All those crazy Forerunner constructs, including the Halo installation itself. Love that stuff.Nope. Those are the main complaints most people have with the game and are totally valid criticisms.

Well, Bungie has always gone pretty in depth with their lore, and they hyped up Destiny's story and setting a lot in their promo material. I think people's story expectations are valid. I'm hoping Bungie takes players' feedback seriously, at least as far as it applies to their original plans for Destiny as a narrative driven social shooter or whatever. They're one of the better devs out there with community interaction, so I'm somewhat optimistic.I'd say not really. The game is essentially just combat scenarios over and over, but Bungie is really good at making those feel dynamic and fresh. You also gain new abilities as you level up, which is exciting. Story is super thin, but I'm not sure why people expected such a grand story. Even though it is not an MMO, it is certainly structured like one. Has any MMO been praised for its story? I'm having my fun with it, mostly because the console market has been so devoid of good scifi shooters lately. Still, it's by no means groundbreaking or trying anything terribly new. Borderlands definitely laid down the blueprint for Bungie, I'd say the biggest difference from the two is combat and shared world aspect. The combat is leagues better than Borderlands, but the shared world aspect is completely lost on a game with so little social features. Literally all you can do in game with one another is dance. I've seen some people express that other players might as well be NPCs, which is valid IMO.
No matchmaking for me is a thumbs down...like you can make in strikes. It's partially kills the game for me. Why is it so difficult?
The thing about friends is that you have fun playing just about any game together. The true test of a game (as far as a review score) is how it plays without your friends, with random people, or whatever.
But we have Matchmaking!!!
Agreed. Just a fantastic world and sense of atmosphere. Very addictive and rewarding, and with fun, very team empowering combat. It is a amazing game IMO.
Is there matchmaking or not?

Is it me or was there absolutely no plot in this game?
