Man, where can I get this game?

Have you actually played Destiny? Besides the opening cut scene, this level is one of the first missions you play. And yes, you can play a much higher level version of it if you want, once you have better gear and unlocks etc like they did in this video.

CVG Review

+ Few can do first-person action as well as Bungie
+ Compulsive gameplay loop
+ Immaculate presentation

- World feels curiously empty without friends in tow
- Story and dialogue are surprisingly poor

Seems very fair. I agree with pretty much all of this. Though I think part of the draw for me personally in exploring the worlds besides the odd chest, cave, item or whatever, is more just to explore the beautiful landscapes and get a sense of the atmosphere and art. Boosting around on the Sparrow in these lush environments has yet to get old for me. I do agree though that going forward they should populate the worlds with more stuff though.

I was kind of bored after half an hour of the beta. Might pick it up super cheap in a bargain bin in a few months to see what all the fuss was about, but meh.

Thinking about it, Destiny in its current state feels like a polished framework for future games/DLC of the series. The gameplay and gameplay features (MP, leveling, loot etc) in itself works nearly perfectly but everything else feels like an elaborate demo for that framework. (Outside of the gorgeous levels/Planets/Maps)

Yeah, that is pretty much exactly what it is. In maybe a year, I could see 5 areas per planet and a level cap of 100.... with adjustments to loot and new prestige items etc.

Problem is, there are always new games coming out, and paying just back to an old game I haven't touched in months to see a new city, is kind of asking a lot.

Regardless of that, it's still very disappointing with how piss-poorly the game explains any of its mechanics, never mind the "story".

It was an awkward revelation when I realized what my "stats" were for... (Strength/Discipline/Intellect?). Awkward because it was strange to discover that all they do is reduce your cool-downs.

Eh, I've put in about twenty-five hours into the game and finished the story stuff with friends, done some public events when they happen, and played a few hours of Crucible...which I don't care for much. I'm talking about the rather deceptive impression that playable intro gives about the game, in general. Reminds me of Halo 2 New Mombassa reveal. Yes, the game has all of this stuff in some way, but it never ever comes together like that presentation shows.

I read them a few minutes ago... I wonder what he meant by "I played Destiny a long time ago and it wasn't what you played, it could have gone either way but I think they chose the right path" (approximate quote from memory).
Does it mean they changed things from the original formula ? Or that future updates will bring things that are very different from the current experience ?

I swear that I had originally read a very different description of Destiny at some point early on. What I originally recall:

Humanity was space faring and colonizing/exploring other solar systems when they were attacked by a highly advanced, hostile alien race. We were pushed all the way back to Earth, having lost everything else. Then, at the last moment, the Traveler (which didn't have a name, IIRC) mysteriously appeared and put itself between the last city on Earth and the invading enemy forces. The invaders backed off, resulting in a perpetual stalemate. The Guardians were humans recruited to go back out into space and try to find a way fight back, as well as try to solve the mystery of what the orb was.

Enjoy them for what they are. Don't buy the hype. Keep your expectations reasonable. Have fun and move on.[/B]
Have to agree with this sentiment. It's also interesting reading this thread as most I know (including myself) are too busy playing and enjoying the hell out of Destiny to come here and discuss this with random people who haven't played it, probably never will, and are slamming it into the ground.

How I perceive Destiny: if you compare single elements like for like it certainly will come up short in a few areas, but when placed together in one package (which most, if not all of the comparisons don't) it becomes cohesive and better than the sum of its parts. A bit like a sports team that doesn't have all the star players but is right up there for the way they play together.

The game is really fun solo. Played through Old Russia and Venus solo on hard. Lots of really great set piece battles, good challenge with the intelligent AI, didn't find the enemies bullet spongy at as I made use of my powers and various weapons to suit each encounter...

I feel like I'm living in an alternate universe right now. :(

Are you super good with precision shots or something? You may just be really good at the game.

Hardly deceptive. They obviously just changed it so instead of it being a mission later on in the game (hence you dropping in already geared up), it was the first one you ever do. There are cut scenes throughout the game so I don't get how it matters there's a different one before the start of this mission.

The nit pickery is at some insane levels by some.

Story: Absent
Combat: Great
Level/Mission Design: Generic
Graphics: Great but sterile
Audio: Great
Longevity: Artificially Inflated

Summary: Schizophrenic. It's a grind with fun sprinkled in. Better played with others but with few tools to do so. Lack of variety is Destiny's Achilles heel. Imagine the joy of watching your favorite movie. Now imagine that is all you could watch.

Rating: 7.5/10

Arstechnica is so right about this....

-- Guardian classes aren't distinct enough from each other to encourage interesting co-op strategies.

I picked the game up for PS4 out of curiosity more than anything. I enjoyed the Halo games but have never been crazy about them. I didn't play the Destiny beta. I'm not a big pvp guy. More than anything I picked it up because i figured Bungie wouldn't make a bad game and needed something to play now that I'm nearing the end of Metro Redux.

That being said, I'd advise anyone who hasn't picked it up to pay little attention to the reviews. I don't think this is a game that can be digested and reflected on in 2-3 days. I've played it every night since getting it and to my surprise, have grown to enjoy it more and more each night. It's subtle, but this is an ambitious project on the part of Bungie. I don't agree with the reviews stating that this is a standard sci-fi shooter.

As my son said (who has also been playing quite a bit of Destiny): "Destiny feels like what would happen if Halo, Borderlands and SWTOR got together and had a baby."

It's an interesting game that takes a lot of time to reveal itself fully.

I am playing it solo as well, albeit on normal. The game is fun as hell. My only knocks are a weak story, not enough mission variety and not enough loot to find in all of the empty caves and rooms. But other than that, this is a solid game with an incredibly addictive hook in terms of gameplay and leveling up for better gear.

I wouldn't put too much stock in reveal trailers and other E3 shit anyway. It should be obvious to any gamer by now that the final product in many cases will see extreme changes from reveal to final product. This is actually one of the more benign sets of changes from reveal to retail when compared to other games. The Borderlands 2 reveal where they were in constant engagement with WARDEN on the dam who has Roland captive with lots of dynamic engagements throughout, on the retail product it became WARDEN far ahead of you in the dam zone with zero engagement until you finally reach the end of the zone. Nothing like the reveal version. They also said bullshit like "see that mountain over there, well you can walk to it." Which in reality meant "we put a landmark in the background of this zone and we separate your current zone from that landmark zone with a series of zone walls that gives you the illusion that you are actually walking towards this location".

The story took itself too seriously. The story was also pretty shitty. A game built around having fun with friends shouldn't have a super serious story imho. I would have prefered something near GoTG a serious threat but with plenty of humor. Incidentally the story was funny but only because it took itself too seriously. So seriously that there were running jokes as we went through, like Ghost throwing out made up words, theorys, or phrases with no explanation as to what they meant , or random pre misson narrators whose characters had so little development or relevance that we had no idea who was speaking. In the end the game is fun but there's a lot of shit that keeps it from excellence. I have hope for a current gen only Destiny 2 to be better.

Yep, have to agree. I'm sick of the "no time to explain", or "I could tell you of stories (but I won't), and it scares the children". Pisses me off a little actually. Doesn't make me curious.

You say potato, I say tomato. I'm not downplaying your obvious love for the game, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't try so hard to downplay my disappointment...something shared by many.

I am really enjoying it. I'm not surprised by the vocal community here though. A large portion of this place can suck the fun out of consensual sex.

Bungie definitely has the chance to redeem themselves within the next six months or so and fix a lot of the glaring issues, along with content updates. If they wait to long I think they will lose a lot of people. There is a very solid framework and great gameplay here, they just need to build upon it.

I'm very positive about this game (haven't bought it though) and I do believe that these review scores are nothing to worry about. I anticipate scores that are basically on the same level real soon from major outlets, but I don't find a 8.8 out of 10 anything to worry about. 8.8 Indicates a properly crafted videogame if you ask me.

I'd be more suspicious if it'd be 10/10s all along.

A lot of people complaining about the length, I guess most people don't realize that they are intentionally holding things back that are on the disk. Most obvious stuff being Iron Banner/Vault of Glass. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if there's a bunch of story missions that are there we just can't access yet.

It's a smart decision I think, will ensure people keep playing to stagger in new content like that.

I really don't get the backlash against this game, I mean I didn't really give a shit about it until I played the beta, while the rest of the internet has seemed to be hyped for the past 4 years so maybe that's entirely it. Oh well, I'll keep on enjoying it.

Indeed. Some free content updates would go a long way. Like more loot to find and some different kind of missions/events.

Well wrap it up folks, Meta critic shows it, 343 is better than Bungie, and so is respawn apparently.

Bungie basically made a more bloom looking killzone that takes place in space. They lost their creativity. AND STILL no PR on sales? Looks like you still needf COD activision.

Polygon - 6/10

Let's wipe away Bungie's legacy with Halo, which put them on top of the world and in a position to make a game they've said they always wanted to make for ages. We'll step back from the whispers of giant budgets, of corporate politics. For now, Destiny is just another game.

As just another game, Destiny is a confusing combination of often at-odds elements — it presents itself as ambitious, almost boastful, while seeming strangely safe and reserved. It wants to eat its cake as a shooter, and have the longevity of an MMO — but it lacks the combat sophistication of the former, and the deep well of content native to the latter.

For all the wonder of its presentation, the swelling potential suggested by its (excellent) score and the basic foundational strength of its controls, Destiny often feels like a collection of its influences' biggest problems.

That is right up there with my biggest wishes for the sequel. I know they aren't going for the MMO Trinity with the classes but i wish there was a lot more synergy when you have all three working together.

Sheeeet, Polygon with that 6.

That's low, even for me. As much as I've been ranting here in this thread, I still think the game is like a 7...

I'm not complaining about the score, at all. Just saying. I completely agreed with Jim Sterling's review, who gave it the same score.

Does Destiny mark the official turning point in gamers' attitudes toward DLC? I've never seen so many, "Well, they have a good foundation, they just need to release more DLC," comments for a game. It's like we've gone from DLC being somewhat rare and often annoying, to expected, to actually being a reason to cut the base game some slack at launch.

Could have told you this from playing the beta. I'm having fun playing through the story mode but Killzone Shadowfall had more interesting missions than this game, at least so far.

On an 7-10 scale? Not really.

Don't know if you've been paying attention this gen, but many reviewers are using the full scale better. Hardly any big game has even scored in the high 80's let alone the 90's. COD, AC, Titanfall, Shadow Fall, Ryse, Knack, InFamous, NFS, etc, all coming it at fairly sensible metacritic averages.

These are the highest rated PS4 games.

And these are the highest rated Xbox One games.

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/xboxone?sort=desc

Looks like the scale is being used pretty well if you ask me. It's not often a big game is straight average to the point of being a 5/10 or worse, despite the hyperbole. I mean, there's games like Barbie, Fast and Furious, Ride to Hell etc on the opposite side of the spectrum.
