It rewards the crappier players. Same in Crusible as well.
Yep, I've noticed this as well. I get more kills than both my partners combined, and they always get more and better loot. This game...

Obviously they need it more than you do
So to get better gear I should start playing like shit? Yep, sounds like good game design, rewarding the good players for doing well wouldn't make any sense. Duh.

I shouldn't be surprised though, this game is filled with ridiculous and non-sensical game design decisions, and this is one of the least offensive. I really miss the days when Bungie still made well designed games...

Guys, is damage normalized in every PVP mode? Just played a round of that capture the relic mode (I'm lvl 11), and every time I ran into this one lvl 21 guy, he'd take me out first every single time. Even if I started shooting first, I could barely take down his shield and it felt like he killed me with 2-3 bullets. Is he that good or is something else going on? Btw, that guy played Warlock, he had AR.

It's normalized in every mode expect Iron Banner. The guy probably had an upgraded rare weapon. Upgrades make a huge difference with recoil, scopes, and rate of fire.

It's evened out, but the extra abilities really do give an edge to higher levels.

Well it feels to me when playing like the extra abilities give a huge edge to higher levels. I know my way around FPS games, I was pretty good at Halo games, but I don't have the time to put into grinding really quickly these days, and the un-even-ness of PvP makes it not fun for me to play which is disappointing because otherwise it seems great and I was excited for that part of Destiny too.

Or maybe the lag won out or dude was beastly with headshots or dude ain't gud

Just nabbed this one in crucible pretty good for a fresh level 20.

I said cotdamn! Coolest gun I've seen so far.

I'm stuck at lvl 20 trying to lvl up through bear with light attributes but shit it's a slow burn apparently lol.

Not holding my breath but I hope you're right.
Why introduce something so damn interesting and not even let us get close to it?

The game sure feels like they've left plenty of room for expansions so I'm pretty confident we will be seeing some cool stuff throughout the year.

So what do you guys think of the balance in Crucible compared to the beta? I think it's slightly better but has tons of room for improvement. Hunter is completely overpowered in PvP. Scout Rifles are still mediocre, and Pulse Rifles are pretty much worthless. I can't believe these are the guys that balanced Halo MP. All that said, I've still racked up a ton of hours so I guess it can't be all bad.

I'm pretty annoyed at legendary engrams having a chance to drop blue loot. It already feels pretty hard to get one of those, and then they make you feel extra terrible when you unlock it and it's a blue.

Wish it was like Diablo 3 where its already set in stone, you just get a random legendary

I used to hate fusion rifles in the beta, after using one today they're actually pretty good almost op.

Also does anyone know how to get gunslinger medals? I need 10 for a bounty and apparently they have nothing to do with the super.

Pulse Rifles don't get enough love imo. Just need one with decent stability. I think people try the early ones and just discard all PRs from then on.

Guys. The loot is random. RNG gonna RNG

There's no defending it though. When a blue item gets decrypted as a green, that's just terrible game design. If they needed to balance the green/blue drop rate, then just make blues drop less often. Items should always, ALWAYS, be decrypted as an item of the same colour or better, or you're just pissing players off.

This game is amazing, but there are so many dumb and stupid game design decisions in here that I'm not surprised at the reviews it's getting.

I actually quite like the random loot for the crucible.

I'm generally in the top 3 but honestly don't mind if other folk get loot and I don't. Just makes me want to play another match. Once you hit level 20 when you do get loot it is generally amazing too.

I'd imagine if you weren't the greatest at PvP then it's at least still fun if you get loot.

We are all in this together......

As a mid-tier PVP shmo deluxe I TOTALLY agree.

It's what keeps me coming back. (Along with Bounties.)

(And also it's still fun as hell, even when you're losing.)

(Also the maps are the prettiest multiplayer maps I ever seen.)

(Also, Destiny is seriously best.)

goodness me.

Just hit 20 last night. I don't seem to have the same complaints about the overarchingloot system or the strike bosses that many do, so this thing has its hooks in me pretty good. I'm actually looking forward to gearing up for the raid. and anyone who knows my preferred style of gaming could tell you what an aberration that is for me. It's addictive to me in very much the same way PSO was and the moment-to-moment gameplay is airtight. Might not get to play much tonight, though.

edit: obligatory shot with Noob Blue Shader

The PvP for me exists as the shit I have to do for bounties and to get better equips. Outside of that I don't actually enjoy PvP, but I'm fucking insane and really want those crucible quartermaster and armour shit.

But yeah the Scout Rifle is a really bad gun to use in situations where the maps are a lot more close quarters oriented. But there are times where I use it on the shitty Moon map and I think that Venus map with vehicles. But then again, I can aim just as well for headshots with the sniper rifle and at least in that case I kill them in one shot if the tickrate wants to play nice with me. I'd say the Pulse Rifle is a safer weapon to use. I've seen people destroy other players at long ranges with auto rifles regardless so it looks like those are the guns to use

In the beta the Grottos were essentially "locked" due to level ?? enemies one shotting you as soon as you approach. Is this area accessible now?

Yeah it is. I got to level 20 and I decided to explore the areas I couldn't get to because of those enemies. They basically just block off a shortcut that leads into this Hive tunnel system that lets you get to anywhere slightly more quickly. Also those "???" enemies were just higher leveled enemies. As soon as you level up higher and get better equips you can wreck their shit

This game is so rewarding sometimes LOL. My loot dry spell continues, even after a fantastic game.

My character so far, Gunslinger Hunter:

They've always been accessible. You just had to know how to dodge.

I should go back and have my revenge on that Ogre and two Knights on Earth now that I'm level 21 and can fly(somewhat).

I havent seen it yet in retail but I believe it's essentially the same. It was never a lock-out. The beta just didnt allow us to get to a level high enough to see anything but ????.

All that means is that theyre 4+ levels higher than you I think. Level up and go back and check them out, maybe this time youll be ready.

The way the story is told in this game is ridiculously bad. And I'm not referring to the script.

Let's take a look this mission briefing early in the game:

Tyrion: Listen to this... from an old warlock, Osiris.

Old Warlock: Every End crawls from the same pit. Rising from the schism to swallow matter, light and life. It will not be stopped, but here... it can be slowed. The Shrines of Oryx must be destroyed!

As confusing as that sounds, these lines could've carried some weight if the concepts spoken of had been introduced elegantly before. This however is not the case. Prior to this briefing, there is no mention of what the "Shrines of Oryx" are or how they affect the player's path through the story. Osiris is literally introduced as a character in this briefing, with a voice actor that sounds confusingly similar to pretty much every generic patrol briefing that came before. The atrocious metaphorical mumbo jumbo that introduces this new threat is as abstract as the unexplained concepts of Light and Darkness. As the lines are uttered ominously in the game, they invoke nothing but laughter from me and my friends as we play through the game. There is no context, little build-up and no connective tissue between these missions.

"Well, many players don't care about the story. It shouldn't get in the way of the gameplay."

No, it shouldn't in a game like this. But for a game that borrows so much from established classics, why not tell the story the way it's told in some of the best games out there?

Metroid Prime had a beautiful way of telling its story without relying on secondary characters. The scanning mechanic told the story of an ancient race and its downfall in a subtle, engaging way that was welded into the rest of the gameplay seamlessly. Destiny would benefit from the concept of scanning lore throughout its worlds, as opposed to randomly placing props with no context. The scenery ends up feeling like a movie set, where everything is there to look cool and not much else.

Dark Souls showed us how a cryptic narrative could be woven through a loot game (which is what Destiny is). Having deep story bits tied to much of its loot, the player had a puzzle to put together which pretty much united the internet in search for meaning. Yes, I know the Grimoires draw from this, but instead of prompting me to go to bungie.net to read what the fuck is up with what I just found, why not have a system where a player could go to the cryptoarch and have him tell me how that item advances to story in the game? Instead, the cryptoarch right now just says generic archeology sound bites that have nothing to do with what you just traded him.

Yes, the game is abundant in sci-fi cheese, but so is most of sci-fi. What sets those other sci-fi stories apart is how they tell the story in an engaging way. In the end, Destiny doesn't seem to know how to tell it's story.

Honestly, this game has me excited for Destiny 2. I feel like this game suffers from new IP syndrome. New games by good developers than stumble out of the gate but still have a lot of potential. Look at Mass Effect compared to its sequel. There were some huge flaws in that game but it was still interesting and had potential. Borderlands is another. Uncharted is another too. If Bungie can address the criticisms properly then Destiny 2 should be the game everyone thought this would be.

I'm level 23 and my Hunter still looks dorky as hell. Got some cool weapons, though! Warlocks and Titans have way better armor.

This has probably been asked already, and if so I do apologize, but how does it work when a higher level player pairs up with someone much lower for story missions?

I was lvl 15 and my son was lvl 4 and I was not hitting near as hard as I expected on the few story missions we tried together. To be clear, I joined his fireteam and he initiated the missions each time.
