Destiny - Review Thread

To be honest I'm not a huge modern shooter guy to begin with but the loot, class system, lore, and social aspects had me really interested. The common complaints that I'm seeing about the game are all about the features I was most interested in.

I don't even know if Shadows will be great, but each video I have seen looks better and better.

I'll still be interested to see how Destiny evolves over the next year or so.

You didn't learn a fucking thing did you?

Yes it's true this game isn't very good. I work in Bellevue, will blow raspberries at any Bungie shirt-wearin' people I see when I go out to lunch today.

In deciding to go all digital this generation, I feel like such a sucker. I will own this game forever.

lol

I rent stuff from gamefly and then purchase it digital if I like it. Haven't played much Destiny but it's OKAY so far. I'd pick it over watchdogs. lol

I decided to buy Destiny because it seemed like my type of game and I really enjoyed my time with the beta. Hell, some of the issues with the beta made me suspect the critical reception might wind up being a bit divisive.

But whatever, I'm a puppet dancing on the strings of Activision's marketing because I like a Bad Thing™ that True Gamers™ have rejected.
I don't own the game and after the beta, I don't plan to TBH but I can absolutely appreciate that the combat loop clicked for some people. At the end of the day, it's all about how much you enjoy that particular element against various backdrops.

So yeah, the comments implying people who like the game are sheep manipulated by evil cunning marketing or feel obligated to like it seem out of place.

Waiting for a critical player mass to let reviewers touch it seems really disingenuous on their part though. I don't get the vibe that having more randoms makes everything better somehow.

whoa, you like Destiny?

not cool. you're not cool anymore

Played the beta and have put ~20 hours into this (level 17).

This game epitomizes all that is wrong with the state of over hyped releases of deeply average games.

Looking at the sheer budget and time spent, this game doesn't come close to what Halo 3 offered (forget comparing the quality of gameplay) as a total package. Yeah but more paid for content later doesn't fly when this cost £50.

I don't know if Joseph Staten leaving had anything to do with it, but I'm pretty sure Activision had a hand in making this as sterile, safe and focus tested as possible.

The mechanics feel like Halo-lite made to appeal to anyone and everyone. The repetitive nature of the game is insulting to the player, made worse by fantastical promises of story and vast worlds combined with the pre-release trailers citing how many 'awards' this shit had already won.

Disgraceful practice from both developer and publisher. Would give it a 5/10, and that's being generous as a huge Bungie Halo (1-ODST) fan.

Edit. The missions where the robot scans something and I have to defend are awful. It was okay in Goldeneye in the Control mission as a one off, but here in 2014, it's awful and lackluster design.

I'll be honest, the only part of Destiny that looks like Staten was involved in is the beginning. It looks like he was forced to leave when his narrative ideas were evidently getting blocked.

Core game play is great. With some patches and DLC, I see a reverse backlash incoming. Diablo 3 all over again, but it won't take Bungie 2 years to get it right.

Fixes that need to happen:

Matchmaking for all mission/strikes/raids

More weapon variety

More populated world's in terms of enemies and loot caches

More loot drops period

All this is easily doable. Core gunplay and movement is fantastic.

Wow ... those reviews.

Are Bungie even concerned about the many mistakes/bad decisions they have made in this game at this point? I mean they freaking made $500 million in the first 24 hours. The shit is just selling because of the hype and marketing (thanks to most of the media outlets). I doubt they will make any drastic changes to the legitimate concerns that so many have pointed. I don't think some of the fundamental design issues can even be fixed w/o major overhaul. Doubt they will be willing to do that.

Its sad and funny to see these same reviewers would hype a AAA game before its release and then upon release the reviews are totally opposite.

I actually enjoyed WatchDogs. Probably my most played game this year beyond TF. Really liked how they correctly incorporated multiplayer and single player. Story was standard, but I actually took my time and enjoyed the city which felt alive.

Destiny has no life.

Different strokes and all that.

Watchdogs didn't hold my attention at all. Biggest disappointment for me this gen.

Destiny on the other hand is fantastic. So very addictive.

So now, the question is whether, having made quite a bit of money, Activision continue to support the IP to their original intent given inceptions of inevitable doubts that are being seeded as more and more reviews roll in....

I think they'll definitely be concerned about long-term interest and try to light a fire under Bungie to address complaints in updates, DLC, and future installments, but I doubt a disappointing critical reception would endanger the future of the series if the sales are good.

Hell, if Medal of Honor 2010 getting a 70something Metacritic and selling a few million copies was enough for EA to greenlight another installment, Destiny's going to be fine.

I definitely see a Diablo 3 thing happening, dont know if Bungie will be given the same...patience as Blizzard with the way this IP has been built up

I didn't want to go back to Destiny after the beta. I'd play Watch Dogs again.

Oh no! We've gone yellow! Will Destiny get back above 75?

I do think that the "big" sites will rate the game better.

Maybe it´s just me but if a game is really hyped I think these sites give some kind of a biased review

(not wanting to say they are payed off .....)

That's interesting. I wonder what the opportunity to play their older, better games will inspire Bungie to do with the Destiny IP going forwards.

I wonder if they'll weep as they take down a Scarab in Halo 3, and see the opportunities they missed.

The thing with the scarab is, they were fun to fight. They showed Bungie were capable of large scale boss-like battles in a FPS. But seem to have lost sight of it.

The Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, and Evolve teams are also probably smiling a bit.

Two of them are delayed till next year so I don't think Destiny is their biggest concern.

They'll have to fix its encounter design and exploration as a whole. Let alone its narrative and pacing. They won't succeed. Destiny has good gameplay at heart (dat cooldowns tho), but everything else is underwhelming at best.

Not that I think Destiny is as bad as XIV 1.0, but they'll need a Realm Reborn ish treatment. Or just a more fleshed out sequel.

That's the thing. Gamers are really thirsty for content right now. A lot of games are being pushed back, periods between great games are becoming month on all 3 platforms, so any game even average is selling well. Plus that Bungie hype and promises.

Yup, they timed the release perfectly. I would have been able to hold out had Dragon Age not been pushed back but I gave in after the delay and not hearing any horror stories uponthe first two days of launch.

It very well might not be in place any more, since that contract still has inapplicable stuff the first game being an Xbox 360 exclusive. That's not to say that the current contract doesn't have a similar Metacritic/GameRankings bonus, obviously, I just wouldn't treat everything in the old contract as Word of God at this point.

That's absolutely true. I think the original plan was a 2013 release as well, so there have totally been changes to the contract. I would still bet that they have a similar bonus though. Whether it's for the same score or amount, who knows, but whatever the number is they have to hit, it's definitely going to be higher than 75%, which is a bummer.

You didn't learn a fucking thing did you?

??

I'm not sure what your asking, I watched videos for Destiny, I played the Alpha and the Beta but I pretty much always had this niggling feeling in the back of my head that Bungie might have bitten off more then they can chew. I was especially concerned about the amount of content after the Beta.

With Mordor I have not seen any videos that have given me any major reasons to be concerned at the moment and it looks fun to play. The only thing I'm at all worried about(as a LOTR fan) is the story.

Destiny player question. Does the core gameplay loop change from beta to end game? Like can you spec your characters to be full tank, full melee full magic slinging etc? The cd for skills were super long in the beta but it seemed like you can spec for lower cd.

I came in to post this exact question. Any ideas what the budget for this game was? I assume it was much less than $500 million. Plus it seems like a lot of people legitimately are enjoying the game.
