Destiny - Review Thread

Lack of early reviews made a lot of you guys buy it blind. That was their plan from the beginning.
For me its now a definitely a no-buy

I decided to buy Destiny because it seemed like my type of game and I really enjoyed my time with the beta. Hell, some of the issues with the beta made me suspect the critical reception might wind up being a bit divisive.

But whatever, I'm a puppet dancing on the strings of Activision's marketing because I like a Bad Thing™ that True Gamers™ have rejected.

Activision: great at making money, even better at ruining a company's reputation.

Marketing was filled with a bunch of empty promises. I still think the game is much better than people here or most places are giving it credit for. I think people were just expecting a lot more, and that expectation was not unfounded.

People have discussed the lack of story/mission structure ad nauseam, which are things that don't actually bother me for this type of game, but what I want to know: what happened to the QA for this game? They worked on it for years but only realized how unbalanced the weapons were after the Alpha/Beta? It was so clear that the auto rifle destroyed and the hand cannon blew for example; I mean not one person at Bungie noticed this?

I'm still enjoying the game and I think people are especially discounting how fun crucible is, but Bungie has a lot of work ahead of them to get this game where it should be.

This is really a damn shame. Bungie said they created Destiny because they want their game to have longevity if an MMO. Destiny seems like an opposite of that with little amount of contents it currently has. Destiny will probably win most disappointment award from many sites, considering how high the expectation was.

Reviews are about what I expected (i guessed a 76 metacritic). But I am having an absolute blast playing with friends. Something about it just clicks with me.

FUCK, why did I give into the hype again? Oh well, Amazon says the game has shipped so I guess I'll have to judge for myself it was worth it. Damn, how am I such a slave to marketing? Well, I guess the real truth is that this summer has been DRY AS HELL and I needed to play something.

That's the thing. Gamers are really thirsty for content right now. A lot of games are being pushed back, periods between great games are becoming month on all 3 platforms, so any game even average is selling well. Plus that Bungie hype and promises.

Actually the really negative reviewers have already finished the available content and leveled up. You shouldn't be able to finish an MMO in this amount of time, especially one that gives you no incentive to keep replaying the endgame. That is why they are so down on it. The really high reviews are from the people whom haven't.

My point was that there are reviews at all. It doesn't matter if its positive or negative. In this case, there are weekend events. Also, a part of ARPGs is replaying the same content for loot.

Sorry to quote this long ass post but did the legendary give any cool buffs or passive abilities? How do the legendaries in this game stack up against other loot games like D3 or BL2?

They have better upgradability. More options and naturally more damage. No other buffs, just options like better range, recoil, damage etc.

I am eating so much crow right now regarding this game. It definitely isn't the biggest disappointment this year (Watch Dogs :( ) but it's still not what I hoped it would be.

Don't get me wrong it's a very fun game, especially in co-op but it's just overall soulless. And I really feel like I experienced most of the game in the beta.

I don't understand this. Can you elaborate?

David Candland deleted his tweet. Not surprised because it was an ill-advised one at best.

It is missing a lot of MMO features don't you think? PS2 has more.

It is missing features that would make it a better MMO because they are afraid of the term MMO for whatever reason.

This game would be better if they fully embraced both of the genres they are trying to fuse.

Or some people actually like the game.

Wow. The more I look at this, the more enraged I get. Who the HELL does this guy think he is? I spent sixty damn dollars on this game. If you weren't done with it, why did I have to pay full price?? And now you're whining about this? "We're just getting started"? Kiss my ass.

I really can't imagine asking my supervisor to evaluate my job performance on the work that I plan to do in the next couple months. Get the hell out of here. You gotta be kidding me with this shit.

As for Jeff's review, I found myself nodding along the whole time, which also made me mad. The part about all the guns looking the same and doing the same thing is particularly frustrating, especially coming off of Diablo 3.

Played the beta and have put ~20 hours into this (level 17).

This game epitomizes all that is wrong with the state of over hyped releases of deeply average games.

Looking at the sheer budget and time spent, this game doesn't come close to what Halo 3 offered (forget comparing the quality of gameplay) as a total package. Yeah but more paid for content later doesn't fly when this cost £50.

I don't know if Joseph Staten leaving had anything to do with it, but I'm pretty sure Activision had a hand in making this as sterile, safe and focus tested as possible.

The mechanics feel like Halo-lite made to appeal to anyone and everyone. The repetitive nature of the game is insulting to the player, made worse by fantastical promises of story and vast worlds combined with the pre-release trailers citing how many 'awards' this shit had already won.

Disgraceful practice from both developer and publisher. Would give it a 5/10, and that's being generous as a huge Bungie Halo (1-ODST) fan.

Edit. The missions where the robot scans something and I have to defend are awful. It was okay in Goldeneye in the Control mission as a one off, but here in 2014, it's awful and lackluster design.

Just realized this... Since the game got under 90% on GameRankings.com (currently at 74.29%), Bungie will not be getting their Quality Bonus of $2.5 million from Activision (Section 10.3).

http://documents.latimes.com/bungie-activision-contract/

That's a bit of a bummer for them I'm sure (assuming that contract is still in place).

It very well might not be in place any more, since that contract still has inapplicable stuff the first game being an Xbox 360 exclusive. That's not to say that the current contract doesn't have a similar Metacritic/GameRankings bonus, obviously, I just wouldn't treat everything in the old contract as Word of God at this point.

Right!? A big pet peeve of mine with Destiny! How many, even some of the legendary weapons look (and perform for the most part) the same!? It's like they are just skins for a core 12 or so weapons with then maybe 10 total attachments. Mix and match throw blue paint here and a weird dagger thing up front... but make it play like that level 8 auto rifle at the beginning. Perfect!

Maybe they should have released it when it was actually ready then instead of a half baked product? They really are delusional if they think a small addition of a mode will change everything. They are straight out saying, "Hey, we know the game is a disappointment as it is, but wait for the raid mode!!!"

People need to be of a certain level for the raid to even be playable. No reason to not keep tweaking it while everyone is still >10

So now, the question is whether, having made quite a bit of money, Activision continue to support the IP to their original intent given inceptions of inevitable doubts that are being seeded as more and more reviews roll in....

This is quite like how I feel about it.

It feels like a design by committee game, nothing risky or out there to avoid alienating anyone.
Subsequently it blends elements of popular games but fails to really build on it or turn things up a notch.

Bigger budget/game seems to count against it, forcing it to be cautious and mediocre instead of opening up new doors.

I don't think that's a bad idea.

To be honest I'm not a huge modern shooter guy to begin with but the loot, class system, lore, and social aspects had me really interested. The common complaints that I'm seeing about the game are all about the features I was most interested in.

I don't even know if Shadows will be great, but each video I have seen looks better and better.

I'll still be interested to see how Destiny evolves over the next year or so.

Man 343 must be ecstatic right now. Their competition is now down to CoD when they release MCC in Fall.

That's interesting. I wonder what the opportunity to play their older, better games will inspire Bungie to do with the Destiny IP going forwards.

I wonder if they'll weep as they take down a Scarab in Halo 3, and see the opportunities they missed.
