I wonder if Activision will have no choice but to release hold DLC to save this.

Oh man. If you think this game needs "saving. . ." Bungie has already outlined and done a pretty good job of making apparent upcoming content for the game which should keep those who aren't pissed they didn't get the game they imagined they would be getting well and truly occupied.

Guys It's actually a solid game. I'm starting to enjoy much more, even tho I do think those review scores do match up with the game.

I'm not going to lie, as the Halo Fanboy in me. I kind of want to gloat but, I'm not that bitter.

a "solid game" is not enough when your company is called Bungie and you worked on this game for over 6 fucking years.

I can totally understand why people are pissed.

I suspect it is doing the game some favors. Maybe it is even intended so reviews miss it. I think people are downplaying the mandatory requirement to put 6 friends together to play the content. Thats a lot of friends to coordinate with, without a mechanism to meet new players in the game without joining random fire teams.

20% of players will actually play the raid content. The rest will never get to coordinate a group.

I think 20% is being generous based on what I've read about their plans for it. I think single digit percentage is more likely.

I like Bungie but perhaps not enough not trust them at their word (I bought the game day one so it probably doesn't matter in the end lol). I put a distance between me and a corporation. I am the consumer and they are the entertainment provider. To put more into that relationship seems childish to me.

This is kind of a weird deflection, though. If there's no level of trust between you and the developers of the games you hope to buy, how do you even know about the contents of the game in the first place? Obviously lots of us watch E3, trailers, and gameplay videos to get an idea of the sort of products we want to purchase. Is it really that unreasonable to think that someone might get excited by one of those things, only to be burned out when they discover they were not viewing a realistic representation of the product?

Maybe it is misguided to trust game developers to be honest with their consumers, but I don't think this is something that we should lump onto the people being deceived and throw insults like "childish" at them. Maybe this problem in communication stems from the person doing the talking? I would certainly argue that's the case here.

Disclaimer: I like Destiny

The game came out 2 days ago and many people are already standing around waiting for the 1 piece of End Game content to be unlocked which will supposedly quiet all the criticism.

There are several things wrong with this picture...

Even if the game ends up being underwhelming, I'd hardly call a game that made over $500M in a day a bomba.

Most of the criticism seems to be that the game failed to meet the hype. I'd agree, though Destiny is not alone in this regard.

Game comes out. People bumrush to the end. News at 11.

It will become a bomba once amazon lists it for 40 dollars.

Considering they sold 500 million bucks worth of copies to retailers... if the current perception of the game stands, they might end up selling half of those copies at $60, the rest at discounted prices to clear out inventory.

Not surprised at the reviews. The game is fun but it's no more than average. I said it before and others have said it, they need to make massive updates to the core of the game over time for it to be a great experience (a la Diablo III). Expansions can't just be more hollow worlds and a higher level cap, most will be bored of it by then.

Strikes are great, PvE is too empty, missions are boring and repetitive, and the Crucible seems horribly unbalanced. Interested to check out the raids when I hit the cap. The clan system is a nightmare.

Play Myth then, still great.

My man, Bungie's best series.

Have you played the game? If you did then then this sort of shit wouldn't come out of you mouth...

With the mention of Shadowrun, he's probably referring to the pvp. The thing I really like about the game is the pvp, but if his expectations were that high I don't blame him for being pissed.

The playable Alpha and Beta allowed me to make the decision. I liked the way the game played. I liked the atmosphere. The music during the Sepkis Prime fight was tops. I had fun.

Disclaimer: I like Destiny too but I definitely see the actual, concrete flaws people are bringing up. (not related to pie in the sky unrealistic expectations)

Only if you think Metacritic is a good barometer of a games quality which I don't. Unfortunately plenty of people do.

There are exceptions I'm sure, but generally I think Metacritic is a good barometer of how the mainstream gaming community perceives a game. Obviously, Metacritic can't comment on your specific tastes.

Yeah, I have a similar feeling on this. I think the game is disappointing, for sure. I would have loved to see more planets, the mission variety is pathetic, the end is a huge let-down, only having 4 PvP modes is baffling coming from Bungie, the patrol missions are blatant filler, and the lack of easy access to voice chat is frustrating.

But the actual core gameplay is still awesome. Punching dregs feels great, speeding around the moon is gorgeous, enemies die in just the right number of hits, the class abilities feel substantial and powerful. I'm compelled to get my gear up at least to the point in which I'm able to clear out the first raid. That'll determine whether or not I'm going to drop some money on an expansion.

Agreed with all this.

It was fun reading the defense force after the beta.

Now it's hilarious.

media and certain posters alike. I wanted this game to be awesome. it became objectively monotonous almost off the bat.

i think the ars technica and polygon reviews were spot on. i personally think anything higher than a 6 is being too nice. Given what was hyped and sold to us, Bungie and Activision should be hung out to dry.

Well, their 10 year plan can got to shit if they don't fix the game's biggest concern which is
that it's a hollow shell, waiting to be filled with DLC.

While I can see bungie being stubborn about their products, you really think Activision gives a shit if gamers think its hollow? Most games are hollow. Activision cares about sales, and part of sales are DLC, not FREE DLC.

wtf at 78, wolfenstein is criminally underrated by the review press.
But I believe it has gotten the justice it deserves in the court of public opinion. That's what really matters. I've been extremely happy with the reception of that game.

Now for The Evil Within...

That is the only time in the entire campaign that the gameplay gets mixed up even a little bit. Savor it. Because it will never happen again.
Ohhh I see but it can be added in the future... this game is to be live for a long time... that why I like it... it is like Warframe that gets new things every month.

I like the game ok but have zero desire to buy a sequel as of right now. Is bungie really planning to spend another 10 years in this universe? If so, that makes me sad :( I love bungie.

Disagree wholeheartedly.

Killzone had a somewhat dreadful multiplayer.

They both have a dreadful multiplayer. Tried the crucible last night and holy crap what a mess.

However...The gunplay is miles better in destiny and that is why i keep coming back to it. The beautiful art style and gameplay is the only reedeming quality in destiny and i have to admit, its pretty fun.

Its just a shame the campaign and content is so bare bones.

See, a lot of people can't judge and make decisions about an entire game by gunplay, atmosphere, and music alone. For many, content, scope, story, and mission variety are equally important, and those are things we didn't learn from the alpha/beta.

Believing in mindless hype seems to be more the issue here. The Metacritic score is a fair assessment. It's a solid 7. Going below that would put it dangerously close to Shadow Fall which is a significantly worse sci-fi shooter than Destiny by far.

I never did get to play the game. Kept getting the "Centipede" error and the "Currant" error. On my home network. Over and over. I forwarded all the ports they suggested in their article. Absolutely no effect at all. Spent $100 on the limited edition and spent 3 days of my limited free time dealing with bullshit just to try and get in the game. Ended up returning it to Fred Meyer this morning where I got it, and since they didn't have any more limited editions available, they refunded me. I'm kinda sad about it.

While I can see bungie being stubborn about their products, you really think Activision gives a shit if gamers think its hollow? Most games are hollow. Activision cares about sales, and part of sales are DLC, not FREE DLC.

Sales of Destiny 2 will hinge heavily on whether gamers see value in Destiny 1. If they immediately start cranking DLC that is more of the same empty world why would we expect any less for Destiny 2? Free DLC can co-exist with a paid expansion. Diablo III had many many free updates that made the experience exceptionally better and then released a substantial expansion. This is coming from the same publisher.

I'm enjoying the game right now, but it's pretty clear that there isn't much depth or variety to it, Bungie have promoted it as being some epic quest on a grand scale and what we got was a few fairly small and empty worlds with a lot of repetitive missions. I'm not really sure where they can go with the game long term other than planning Destiny 2 based on the feedback they've got, I don't think it's possible to fix the worst of it's flaws without a complete overhaul. I think reviews around 7/10 are about where I'd place it too, the gunplay is enjoyable but behind that there's not much of anything else to keep your attention long term. Raids are being pushed as the thing to look out for but they're not easily accessible to everyone and I'm also not convinced it'll be much different than what we're doing now.

It'll be interesting to see how well Destiny 2 does in the future, it's almost certainly going to happen but they're going to need to pump the same kind of money into marketing it again to convince people they've fixed everything that isn't liked. It's possible though, just look at Assassin's Creed.

I have been at work all day counting the minutes until I can play Destiny. Are there issues? Yes. Can most be fixed? I believe so.

Ohhh I see but it can be added in the future... this game is to be live for a long time... that why I like it... it is like Warframe that gets new things every month.

That's the promise, but the worrying thing is that the most substantial stuff is probably going to be in the $20 expansion packs. On top of the $60 we've already paid.

Bungie has shown a few of the upcoming free updates in a image, though, so we'll definitely get some post-launch content. But I'm going to bet that missions with more substantial mechanics/environments is going to cost you more than the asking price of the full game alone.

This game has sparked some of the most mixed reactions of any game.

The game tries to please everyone, cater to too many disparate tastes. It's not surprising that that type of design causes mixed reactions.

That's not even addressing the 'collection of parts' vs. 'unified experience' problem the game has going on.

I suspect Destiny is going to follow the exact arc of Assassin's Creed. First game sold fantastically well, and reviewed as a 7. Solid in many ways, but also very flawed.

The sequel came along and was a much better game that nailed the concept and justified the sales, solidifying itself as a legit major franchise.
