Why haven't you bought a PC yet?

...The PC is home to indie and self-published games, far more than exist on consoles. We are now seeing the first wave of kickstarter games coming out on the platform too, ranging from hardcore oldschool RPGs to immersive space sims....

Perfect post, but i really want to highlight this part because to me its what makes upcoming PC gaming years so exciting. To me its a bit funny how the console crowd almost unanumously praised RPG series like Star wars KOTOR and Mass Effect bu at the same time ignore the original genre which was on PC. The old RPGs pretty much put bioware's console attemps to shame in terms of choice, dialogs, story and lenght, just more in depth in general.

Here's a list that pretty much sums the specialized genres on PC and that have me hyped for release. Funny enough, most are not hardware heavy, because honestly it has come to a point where in certain genres it just doesnt matter that much. Heck, most of them i play or will be able to play on my macbook pro.

Wasteland 2
Divinity: original sin
Torments : Tides of numenera
Pillars of eternity
Kingdom Come: Deliverance (wow)
Lichdom
The forest
Routine
Elite Dangerous
Star Citizen
Enemy Starfighter
Wings of Saint Nazaire (pixel art space shooter!)
Planetary Annihilation
Civilisation Beyond Earth
DCS MIG-21
DCS world
Crawl
Fortnite
Gods will be watching
The vanishing of Ethan Carter
Reset
A hat in time
Dreamfall chapters
Ghost of a tale
Black desert online

And so many more that im realizing i could add games for way too personal time.

I might add i decided on PC + WiiU + 3DS combo this gen.

Read the Dead Rising 3 PC thread. There are lots of people with significant problems.

Yep, there are definitly some issues wiht that game.

The same goes with just about every game.

Annnnddd here is where you lost me. For most people it is NOT a case of "just about every game" having issues.

I've had ZERO issues with PC games in the past several years, vs friends on the old consoles constantly dealing with terrible frame rate and screen tearing.

I think the biggest issue I had to deal with was Watch_dogs stuttering if I used Ultra textures, but putting them on Very high instead (the same as PS4), the issue went away.

"Every game" is certainly a massive hyperbole but in my experience I have had comparatively a lot more problems with PC games flat out failing to work then I ever have with console games. For me that not a big deal but I would certainly qualify it as a hassle for others.

The myriad of hardware configs makes this inevitable. If a console game constantly failed in the same way its going to be for the majority of owners and will be picked up in reviews and so you'll know to avoid it.

Can't think of a single time it happened to me across the last ten years, and it's not like i play just a sparse number of releases either.
It's true that sometime I had to hunt down for solutions with some games, maybe more than I'd liked to... But it was typically stuff like "Finding a way to customize keybinding", "how to force 60 fps into this game", "how to force AO/Vsync/Anisotropic filtering", "how to implement/improve widescreen support" and so on.
You know, the kind of stuff that when happen when you're dealing with a console game you have just to swallow without protesting.

When you buy a PC do you get put on some kind of black list that prevents the purchase of any other system or game?
You say this like you are joking but it's real.
pc-gamer-mark1.jpg
Check your wrist, every pc gamer carries this mark.

It's how gamestop employees identify us.
Last time I went to buy a game for my vita I had to get a cast on my arm to hide it, I had my fellow pc gamers sign it so it wouldn't look suspicious.

As soon as I got the counter with the tearaway copy I wanted to buy the man behind the counter shouted 'let me see your wrist!'
I showed him my left arm and he seemed pleased, when he asked to see my other wrist I pointed to the cast.
He looked at me suspiously, thought about it and said " I'll give you the benifit of the doubt this time"
He made me sign something but I couldn't tell what it said, instead of being written in the roman alphabet it was just a combination of X triangle squares and O s.

As I was walking out of the store I could feel his gaze on my back, sweat was pooling in the cast and my legs felt weak, but I had to keep my composure.
As soon as the door closed behind me I looked back and saw him pick up the phone.
I ran until I was a few blocks away, then caught my breath and called my friends to pick me up. The wait for them seemed to last forever. The thought of Lord Gaben watching over me gave me strenght.
At home we burned the cast in the fireplace.
I can NEVER go back.

Can somebody give me list of top 10 games that are exclusive on PC so I can see what I am missing.

I'll list some of my favorite exclusives with a video each if you want to check it out.
I will stick to more recent games that make good use of modern hardware:
Putting some effort into this because I fucking love these games.

-Trackmania 2 (arcade racing game with excellent track editor and a highly competitive community, has an endless learning curve)
A trailer:

gameplay by a skilled player:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fBoeLVZQPw
It wouldn't be a pc game without stuff like this being made:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh4fJekDhxw&index=1&list=PLAD98E770FA1DD269

-natural selection 2 : a hybrid fps/rts (strategy) competitive multiplayer game, where one team plays as marines and the other plays as aliens with very different playstyles
Each time has a commander who coordinates his team and builds stuff and does research into tech for them from a top down viewpoint.
Amazing game with an endless learning curve , good graphics , endless gameplay variety and full mod support.

A trailer:

Competitive tournament being casted:

-divinity original sin:
hard to explain what this game is in a few sentences or to show it in some short gameplay footage
it's a classic isometric party based turn based rpg with a big open world to explore ,tons of ways to build your characters and lots of well designed turn based battles to fight out.
It also has mod support and coop

I'll just link the trailer that should give some idea about the game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qORwPdHJbM

It's pretty similar to baldur's gate, the much loved series that dragon age origins was based on (before it got watered down for a wide audience)

-dota 2: Doesn't need a description, I assume you know what it is.Worth checking out , everyone that plays it for more than a few hours gets hooked to the gameplay and loses years of their life.

-Civilization 5: turn based, grid based empire building strategy game is the best way I can describe it.
You explore, expand, conquer and or use dimplomacy and trade to get to victory
Anyone who'se played it for a while knows the phrase 'just one more turn' as it is 4 am and they have to get up for work at 6.30

video that shows some gameplay and explains what is going on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fi3CiMJ62jI

-dirty bomb / extraction (the name changed recently)
Spiritual successor to return to castle wolfenstein enemy territory by the same developers.
I'm in the alpha atm and it is a worthy successor (never thought we would see the day)

If you don't know what RTCW was (zero exposure to pc gaming:p) or why it's a big deal: Imagine a worthy successor to socom by the socom devs as playstation gamer.
RTCW is a classic and one of the most loved fps games on pc.

It was super hard to find any recent video as the alpha is under NDA still so there's nothing on youtube gameplay wise recently, this is the best I could find

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDHyNK7T9vQ and shows a bit of the game

-strike vector: fast paced arena style multiplayer game but with jet/hoverjet robots in huge areas
It looks awesome has an insane skill cap and is tons of fun

Vanishing of Ethan Carter is coming out on ps4 as well. I'm glad you posted it though because I had forgot it was coming out the 25th. Just preordered on Steam...hope it's as good as it looks.

At some point i gave up looking if it was exclusive or not and just went with what interested me. On the indie side its more than normal that they are seeking to expand on as many platforms as they can so its not really a big deal. In general though, cRPGs & space sim are the main genres that hooked me in for another round. You can see how active i am in the Elite dangerous thread for example :)

One lessoned I have learned about PC building - if you are going to build a PC, don't invest in a half assed machine. I mean you are leaving console gaming behind and that is equivalent to a half assed rig. With PC gaming, its all about running games on Ultra and 60 FPS.

If I wanted to build a PC today, I would have to spend at least $1,200 on it. But I am not really interested in PC gaming or gaming in general atm

I haven't bought a
gaming
PC because honestly speaking, the games I like are mostly exclusive to consoles. The only ones that were worth getting a PC for are now available on consoles and they're pretty good on them (Diablo III, Minecraft, many indies, etc). Besides, I have zero interest in MOBAs.

waiting for oculus rift to be out. then i shall build a beastly PC :)

Haven't really felt a need to game on PC since the console "HD" era began in 2006. GPU prices went through the roof (I remember when the 4MB 3DFX was the best thing ever and I bought it for less than $250) and I disliked that trend.

Read the Dead Rising 3 PC thread. There are lots of people with significant problems. The same goes with just about every game. Hassle & convenience is an issue that just isn't debatable when it comes to this PC/Console comparison. It personally doesn't bother me... I'm one of the people that rarely ever has any issues with PC games. I can't even remember the last time I had a game-breaking problem, but maybe that's just luck, or maybe I'm subconsciously ignoring them like Opiate said.

One other thing I wanted to mention was about the cost of games. I bought Wolfenstein for PS4 for a little over $50, like $53 or something. I sold it 2 weeks later for $37, for a net loss of 16 bucks, and this was a brand new release. You can't do this on PC, period. It's a huge benefit for consoles.

I wish I could sell my digital PC copies of South Park Stick of Truth (spent $40), or Divinity (also $40). I could make a list a mile long of the games I wish I could resell, and I don't mean resell months later... a lot of them just a week or two later after buying and completing them. The response to this is "reselling a game on consoles means you lose it! On PC, you keep it forever!"... Wanna know something? I guarantee you if reselling ever became an option for digital PC games, like on Steam or something, I guarantee you it would be HUGELY popular, just massive. I'd be all over it in an instant, holy crap.

Anyway, so the whole thing about "dude you can make up the cost of a PC several times over just from buying games cheaper!" is superficial at best. It's not nearly as cost saving as people make it out to be when you consider reselling, and also renting.

If you have the intent to sell a game, set up a separate steam account with that game. As long as you are not caught.
Regarding retail, you have to give the console game receipt as well to abolish ownership.

Just like on consoles you can do all your shopping on one store (which would be Steam in this case) but who does that? You save hundreds by looking around. In fact if you have ES installed in your browser you see what's the cheapest price for the item currently. Then there's buying games from people in area's that have cheaper games (mainly Russia). Like that you can easily get another 50% off even a new game.

For example liezryou sells Fable Anniversary for $14 here.

What is ES? Sounds like some kind of price check, but some quick google searches came up empty.

I would take an option to just gift a game I previously bought to another player. Not gift another copy of the game, but the one I already bought, after I finish playing it. While 'unoficially' trading things is a little fraught with risk, I'm a grown up
I own a PC! after all
so I'm OK with that. If they were to implement reselling within the marketplace, they'd probably take a cut, but more realistically, the publishers will never allow it, whereas gifting, that's still within the realm of possibility (it seems to me, anyways).

I think they were referring to Enhanced Steam.

Isn't steam legally required to allow reselling in the EU? They are just not implementing it.

If that is a sign of what is coming and not just shitty optimization and flukes, and if you want a PC that's going to be able to handle true "current gen" games higher than medium settings, the bar for what some in this thread claimed were enthusiast (which I said were mid-range) level cards just got lowered quite a bit. This gen has only just begun too. For anyone thinking about building a gaming PC, you're going to want at least a 4gb vram card now.

Good luck with your sub $1200 PC.

I am willing to bet that Evil Within will run perfectly fine on sub4GB VRAM cards, just like Rage and Wolf did before it.

And the same thing with Mordor, the difference between high and ultra will be so low that most people won't care. Plus I have no doubt the consoles will run the "high" texture setting, if even that.

Yeah, those are not minimum requirements or anything and the Ultra textures for Shadows of Mordor is just an optional pack. But we're just getting started, and if you want a system that is going to actually run and look better than what is probably around the corner for consoles, you will want a much more recent "mid range" card with at least 4gb vram.

The Witcher 2 was the first game since the original Crisis I think that could bring gaming PCs to their knees, but that was if you were using Ubersampling. And it was extremely hard to tell the difference between that and High, yet it used so much more in the way of resources. Could be the same situation here, but it's unlikely. We'll know more in less than two weeks.

Why do People always use Witcher 2 as an example? Ubersampling is like Sparse Grid Super Sampling Anti Aliasing (SGSSAA) that can be used in almost any Game (except DX11). I have no problem to bring down any game to 5-10fps.

It's just one of the 1000 forms of Anti Aliasing and nothing special about the Witcher. It's only good, one company finally added it in the menu and doesn't force you to use Bits in the NV Inspector.

People run around and panic while I play every game at 40-60fps -.- And no ... not on Low Settings.

My plan was to buy a PC at the end of next year with the 20nm graphic cards coming out. But I read that they weren't coming out until 2016 now and also that GTX970 is a great card.

My objective really is to build a gaming PC that does 120fps for racing games. But being in Australia/Malaysia the PC I want to buy is around $2000 including the asus vg248qe panel :(

That's just way too expensive for my budget right now. Especially considering I got a 3DSXL, wii u and a sony 40 inch tv this year already. Plus my ps4 is kind of just sittin there.

Steam games are so cheap in Malaysia now only US$30 for brand new releases.
