the point stands. why are steelers considered an all-time team when they essentially have only mattered in the 70's (as far as superbowls go) but the 49ers aren't? we have essentially the same past: dominated 1 decade, won 1 superbowl in another decade. i see where an argument can be made but to say the niners aren't supposed to be in the conversation is ricockulous!
The Steelers were relevant in the 90s and this decade as well. They went to and lost in about 100 AFC Championships in the Bill Cowher era. Not to mention that they were going to playoffs almost every year in that era.

The Cowboys have pretty much been competitive in every decade (they did suck balls for some time after Montana took their soul).

The Niners weren't relevant before or after Debartelo. But I agree that they belong in the conversation for 2nd with the Steelers, but that won't be the case for long with their current owner.

the 49ers were basically relevant from 1980 to 2002. we missed the playoffs 3 times in that span, including our 10-6 record in 1991 (and im convinced we would have won the superbowl that year, we won our last 6 games and were destroying people.... redskins were bitches that year we would have taken them).

yes, its true we haven't been to the playoffs in 5 years, but things will change for the better. its true that york was once part of the problem, but anyone who actually knows our franchise can no longer use that excuse. we have paid good money for players, good money for coaches, york has nothing to do with our failures of the past couple years. i blame him for putting us in a bad spot from the beginning (firing mooch after he got us to the divisional, letting TO and Jgar go), but he (or denise or jed or whoever the fuck is pulling the trigger) has been much better lately. no, he's not eddie "hands on" debartalo but he's finally letting people who know football run things.

people are obviously going to say the cowboys or steelers at this point because both teams have had recent success. but for all of the jocking of the cowboys, they haven't won a playoff game in 12 years. i know relevancy can't be graded SOLELY on playoff wins (its obvious the cowboys were a good team last year) but lets not take the cowboys ranking into the all time greats just on how they look right now. they haven't done dick in almost a decade and a half.

Its weird seeing all these niner fans posting throughout the season here at GAF. Most niner fans I know only appear on draft day.

remembered fondly by cowboys fans because the last time they won hardware is also roughly the last time they won a playoff game...

the drought will come to an end soon I truly believe it will and at least I can say I was alive to watch my team win a ring.

I couldnt care less whether or not they were in st louis previously or not. I was bitching about the fact that divisions in both baseball and football make almost zero sense geographically.

You're not exactly breaking new ground with this observation. The 49ers were in a division with St. Louis. Atlanta, Carolina, and New Orleans. Every road game was a 5+ hour flight. Shit happens. We stole the Seahawks from the AFC and the Cards from the NFC East, kicked out the south east dreck, and now our division makes sense.

The other teams are still horrible, though. :D

bluemax i thought you were a chargers fan!?

This always confuses people! I am from Washington state, I grew up watching Rick Mirer fling dead ducks short of Joey Galloway. I'm a Seahawks fan! I just play a Chargers fan in Madden because Lone had the Seahawks when I first joined up.

Must be nice to be able to choose what team to root for every week!

I'm no Y2Kev style flip flopper! The only rooting interest I have in the Chargers is for ratings boosts in Madden!

Sorry what do i need to look up, that quote said the arizona cardinals were in the NFC east division... arizona is west of texas.. and east of the pacific.

Maybe Im just tired and missing something?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/standings?season=2001&breakdown=3&split=0

Like i said how the fuck is arizona considered "east."

For the same reason the Atlanta Braves were in the NL West from 1969 until 1992.

Also I still think that St. Louis being in the NFC West makes very little geographic sense.

ooooh, my bad.... lonestar didn't even want the seachickens. actually i dont even think he is a seahawks fan, i think he was just a fan of shaun alexander. who knows though!

This is mostly correct! He has a mancrush on Shaun Alexander (See this weeks NCAA thread for example, yes I read the thread, no I'm not ready to talk about college football yet). Since I was a noob I deferred to him and no one else had the Chargers so I took them to make sure I had a good RB.

what an awesome monday night game. can't wait.

seriously who comes up with these matchups? so far:

1. raiders/broncos - god awful and everyone knew it would be
2. eagles/cowboys - great game and everyone knew it would be
3. jets/chargers - this game looked like balls before favre came aboard and it was still balls with him
4. steelers/ravens - going to be boring as fuck. probably a steelers blowout but even if it isn't who wants to watch a 9-3 game? obviously the fans of these 2 teams but no one else.

whatever though, i'm just glad we get a monday nighter. i'm sure non-niners/cards fans say the same thing about our game!

The last few years I've been a very casual fan of the NFL. Watching games here and there and trying to learn as much of the sport as I could. Finally I decided this year that I was going to take the plunge and choose a team I could grow with...I chose the Cleveland Browns...

Despite this choice I'm having a lot of fun. :D

I'm sorry. Last year was a glitch in the Matrix, you're gonna be waiting quite a bit longer for another winning season :(

*fist pound*

Although, being a Cleveland fan means you will never see a championship for your team :(. Anyways if the Browns lose badly today, RAC is gone as well as DA.

Look at it like this Quinn will be in soon. And he'll be like the Browns Lebron.

Maybe my favorite game of all time, (even with what happened next in Atlanta.) I'm just glad people remember the great throw, and not Rice's obvious fumble earlier in the drive. :lol

Not from the same game, but Young/Favre games were great.

As a lifelong Falcon fan, I just want to say I hate the 49ers.
.

Although it was pretty damn sweet to see the Falcons beat the 49ers in the playoffs in '99. Seeing that game live and in person was amazing. :D

I think that was also the same game where Garrison Hearst broke his ankle on the first play from scrimmage. Not a pretty sight at all.

I was turned off of them after all those superbowl losses back in the day. Although if they do end up moving to Toronto for good one day, I may have to open up to them.

But they will beat the Bengals today right?...right? :(

Wait, the Fox guys watch the games at their studio desk? I assumed there was a big comfy couch section or something. That would kind of such. My setup is way better.

And wrinkle up them suits... not a chance.
Their setups still win by default, because that studio desk comes with a massive salary.
I don't get paid to watch football and share my opinions on it from my couch, least not yet.

Fantasy Gaf, I'm dropping DeAngelo Williams, who would be the better pickup Michael Pittman or Darren Sproles?

Why? when ATL is giving up 5 yards a carry.
Williams will be fine.
